Contuing the theme of National Championships...

    LSU 3
    BYU 1
    Utah 0

    and

    Heisman Trophy winners...

    LSU 1
    BYU 1
    Utah 0

It's easy to see which two are big time programs,

and which one is only a pretender.

As a BYU grad and not a Ute fan I just have one line of comment regarding relevance for either school. Notre Dame 21 National Chamionships. Alabama 16 and Oklahoma 7. Now we have perspective.

Invite LSU to come enjoy the Rocky Mountains in a stadium with the breathtaking backdrop of the Wasatch Front.😉
So what happens to all the fans who have purchased airfare to Houston? I hope they get refunds.
After Saturday's game in that miserable heat and miserable performance, I was thanking my lucky stars I didn't get tickets for the LSU game in Houston. Now I'm even more grateful after this talk of a change in venue.

BleedCougarBlue was suggesting that the BYU-LSU game should be cancelled because it would look bad to be playing a football game while Houston was still underwater.

That's obviously not a concern for the citizens of Texas, since numerous football games involving Texas teams, including the Houston @ San Antonio game, are still scheduled to be played this week.

Why would the September 2nd BYU-LSU game be cancelled,

when the Houston @ San Antonio game is still scheduled to be played on September 2nd?
    --------
San Antonio isn't in the projected path of the storm; it's tracking North and East. However, cancelling is remote; too much $ to lose; and too hared to re-schedule. FYI, the Astros have moved there next two series to the road venue. I imagine this is no easy task looking for an appropriate venue this close to the game.

"Nationally, nobody mentions moving the game to Lavell Edwards Stadium."

    Why would they?

The AdvoCare Texas Kickoff was organized by NRG Stadium and ESPN, so, of course, they're going to try to find a stadium within relatively easy traveling distance of NRG Stadium.

Baton Rouge and New Orleans are only 5 hours away from Houston.

The Cotton Bowl, Memphis, Atlanta and Nashville are all similar distances for LSU fans, which are obviously make up the majority of ticket holders.

Even the majority of BYU ticket holders are most likely from Texas and other nearby states.

Totally disagree with playing the game making BYU and LSU look like a couple of heels, especially when over a dozen other Texas and Louisiana teams - including Maryland @ Texas, Texas A&M @ UCLA, and E. Wash @ Texas Tech - will be playing games as scheduled this week.

You did read something about Lavell Edwards Stadium in the Deseret News article. The author misquotes the SB Nation article which only mentioned the Super Dome and the Tigers' home stadium. For some reason, the author appended LES and AT&T Stadium in Dallas (which is already hosting Michigan-Florida). Nationally, nobody mentions moving the game to Lavell Edwards Stadium.

Though I would love the game to be played, I bet it gets cancelled. The original location looks to be a no-go but even if the game were played (and for obvious reasons they would try and keep the new location as close as possible to the original stadium) it makes LSU and BYU look like a couple of heels, playing a GAME while tens of thousands of people have their homes full of water. BYU in particular is sensitive to that kind of negative press. We (BYU) already work hard at walking the straight line even in good times and get criticized anyway; playing in a flood would be worse.

It is possible to feel sympathy for the victims of the flooding in Houston, and still talk about football.

After all, the subject of this article is relocating the BYU-LSU football game because of the flooding in Houston.

I tend to agree more with Jello on this one than with my fellow Cougar fans. Yes, I understand there was vanilla play calling and there were bad penalties and lots of holdings Portland State did that weren't called, all of which made the score look worse than it should have (or even look worse than it really was).

That being said, despite all that, BYU executed very poorly. I saw our OL struggle against their DL. I saw our DL struggle somewhat against their OL. I saw our receivers fail to get separation much of the time. Mangum wasn't bad, but not great yet (I still see him potentially being a very good QB, but that's with some improvement).

Fortunately, a bad first game doesn't indicate a bad season. It could, but I hope not. We should see much improvement; enough, I hope.

Maybe people are right. It is possible that the that the QB intentionally under threw multiple passes as his WRs intentionally did not achieve much separation, and that the offensive line intentionally did not play well, and that the DBs and LBs intentionally and repeatedly allowed short passes, and tons of 3rd down conversions, by a freshman quarterback. That they intentionally handed off to the smallest player on the field on 3rd and 1 instead of their 255 lb running back sitting on the side line. That they intentionally committed stupid penalties at the wrong time. Yeah it all makes sense. Realistically, it was game 1 and they looked bad. Play calling was atrocious at critical times. No excuses other than that they played a lot of players. They should have had Mangum throwing short quick passes like PSU. Hope they give Burt and the big RB more of a chance. PSU had a great game plan for BYU and looked motivated. Thought BYU's running game looked good when they put in El Bakri and started running it with freshman. Hope this week is better- if they play. Hope they can get the best players on the field whoever they are. Hope springs eternal.

Stranger things have happened and i heave no idea how good LSU will be this year, but the game I watched on Saturday showed receivers that struggled to get open and an o line that under performed regardless of whether Detmer was keeping it vanilla. If that does not improve this week will be a rough game regardless of where they play it.

btw, who cares who won what when (utah or byu)... we have not seen Utah play a down yet so this year BYU loked enimic game 1 and Utah is still a huge question mark, we'lI see what Thursday brings. besides i cant recall the last impressive signature win BYU had so why do i care what they or Utah did 10 yrs ago? show me on Saturday you got the goods and that this will be an exciting season.

    BYU 1976 to 1985
    Utah NEVER

UTAH more conference championships than our little blue brothers. Making like those in Orovo are something special laughable!

How about keeping it fair between both schools and still make it a neutral site NOT close to Baton Rouge…. Like Texas Stadium in Arlington.

Though I would love to see this game played the forcasts show heavy rain in Baton Rouge and New Orleans for days and tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people being displaced! They need all the hotel rooms for homeless victims and for rescue crews, electrical crews and others more important than two football teams. Rescheduling is the only answer.

    UteBusted:

Funny you should mention conference championships. Remind us how many MWC championships the coogs won or shared, and how many Utah won or shared. And which was the most recent.

The funny thing is, every year Utah will always have a chance to win a conference championship. The coogs will never have that chance again.

Got tickets to Houston but kind of hoping the game is rescheduled rather than new location this weekend. It will be tough to make changes on such short notice. No way LSU agrees to Provo. Either at LSU, NO or rescheduled.

Offense across the board needs to be 2-3 times better to have a chance. Veteran o-line in particular underperformed more than any other unit. It won't take long against LSU to know if that was holding back and first game kinks or something worse. Pray for the good folks in Texas!

Hey Nav...how do you get to be known as a Big Time Powerhouse? And don't tell me it's someone who's been ranked in the top 25 for ..............
Ask ESPN if they'll help u get a game against LSU in an NFL stadium. Good luck with that.

"So, the options are New Orlean's Superdome or LSU's Tiger Stadium. No mention of Provo?"

Typical clueless whining from a hater.

The game was organized by the NRG and ESPN, so it makes sense that they'd try to find a venue as close to NRG stadium as possible.

No need to fret, unlike Utah, BYU is used to playing in these made for television games versus big time opponents in major stadiums.

If they turn it into a home game for LSU they need to return the favor and schedule another game in Provo. BYU has done OK playing in NFL Stadiums in the past, even making it a home game feeling last year against Arizona. They have won in Arlington and the Meadowlands and lots of times in San Diego. So we'll see what happens.

    You just don't get it.

BYU was intentionally vanilla on offense and defense, while Portland State used their entire playbook and played with a "nothing to lose" attitude.

Of course no mention of Provo as an alternate location - this was always a semi-home game for LSU, being only a 5-hour drive from Houston.

Logistically, it's much easier to move the game to the Super Dome or LSU's stadium, since the bulk of the fans who have already purchases tickets are LSU fans.

As far as big time programs, LSU and BYU are both former National Champions.

The same can't be said for that wannabe big time program on the hill which can't even win conference championships, let alone national championships.

golong: My problem with your take on this vanilla offense we saw is that Detmer was vanilla last year too and I'm concerned he is doing the same this year. I hope your right and I hope we see a lot of airing it out, draws, screens, passes in the flat, passes to the TE's etc.
Isn't it funny how the ute fans that frequent the BYU articles like Naval can't and won't acknowledge that BYU is and has been a nationally recognized football program . Utah is good and have been good now for the last 10 plus years but BYU has been more highly recognized for longer than the utes.
I'm not nearly as optimistic about our winning these tough games coming up as I was before this last game with Portland but I'll remain hopeful. The talent is there.

    @golong

Nobody's game plan is ever to look weak. That just doesn't make sense. Even if Ty Detmer did hold back, I'm sure they didn't want to look as though they barely capable of beating an FCS team.

Going into this week, I'm mostly concerned about the O-line. They looked really bad against Portland State. Portaland State has 9 players for FBS teams, a few of those from P5 teams like Oregon, but that's no excuse. There's going to be a lot of NFL caliber players on all the teams that BYU plays in September and if they play like this again, they will not win any of those games.

    @Naval Vet

“It’s going to be fun to be able to go up against a school that has the history that they have and we have the history that we have. Two big-time powerhouses." -- Matt Hadley

Yeah. It does seem odd to compare themselves to LSU that way. BYU does have a great history of big wins, bowl success, a National Championship, ect. That doesn't mean that BYU is on the same level as LSU, but it would be dumb to ignore that history. Because it's there. It will always be a part of BYU.

    golong,

Danny Etling was announced as the starting LSU QB against BYU. He started the final 10 games last season for LSU and completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,123 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He is a senior this year.

Frustrated after this Portland game , mistakes were a factor but they still should have been more dominant. My worry is Detmer is proving to be vanilla as a play caller, he has the knowledge but is being way too conservative . I wish he would use the backs out of the backfield in the flats a lot, McMahnn used the backs a ton as did Young, Bosco etc. use Doug Scovil's game plan. We moved the ball much better using Scovils philosophy.

    "Two big time powerhouses"?

That would be the Alabama - Florida State game or Michigan - Ohio State. In order to be a big time powerhouse you have to finish in the top 25 more than once this century. This is a Big Time Powerhouse ordering a body bag game in order to get some practice.

  • golong Washington, UT
    Aug. 27, 2017 11:59 a.m.

I'm guessing Detmer's offense did exactly what he wanted it to do; to look weak, poor, unable to score, bumbling, etc. He held several important players out of the game, he ran about two different running plays the entire game. They hardly threw to the wide outs. He's game planning for LSU, don't kid yourself. This is the guy who upset Miami, and he's going after LSU this time. LSU has a freshman QB, and lots of issues with their team. If BYU does not shoot themselves in the foot, they will beat LSU--wherever the game is played.

So, the options are New Orlean's Superdome or LSU's Tiger Stadium. No mention of Provo? It's easy to see who the little brother is in this matchup. They must not be aware of the legacy, national following and 1984.
