I don't know how many times this paper and the BYU basketball following have mentioned Tj Haws and Nick Emery in the same breath of basketball greatness, but observant spectators of the Lone Peak BB team and particularly the AAU circuit will tell you that a huge chunk of the success of the "Mythical National Champions" was do to Shumway. He was the best defender on either of those teams and he was the most athletic of all the players. When he first decided to go to the BYU football program, I immediately thought of the predicament that would put in the BYU BB program. I hoped that BYU could get a defensive presence on their roster because anyone who watched the Lone Peak boys knew that without Shumway, there would be markedly less defense, hustle and aggression on the court when Haws and Emery were left to their own devices. Now we see that there are more important cogs in the machine that just scoring.

BYU offense = Not tested yet. We don't know if they'll be good or average.
BYU defense = Probably over rated at this point.
BYU vs Portland State = Will only answer half the question.
BYU vs LSU = Should give us an idea as to what expect this season.

He may become the all time receiver at BYU with the combination of Detmer and Mangnum.

Happy he was a good athletic basketball player. Hope he shows well in Football.
