We have to tone down the rhetoric on both sides. Republicans are not evil.
Democrats are not evil. You can disagree with someone and still like them.On another matter... the shooter had a history of domestic violence and
mental instability. Why on earth should someone like that be able to get a
firearm? It's time for some common sense in this.
@ tototwo -"... But Washington DC's gun laws can not be part of
the debate. The shooting did not happen in Washington DC., but Virginia where
the gun laws are much more lenient."True, Virginia's gun
laws are much more lenient that the DC, and VA also has a many times lower rate
of violent crime. The problem is that law abiding citizens working in DC
are prohibited from having a gun with them while in DC. You may have a permit
to carry in VA or MD, but if any part of your travels that day take you into DC
you are not allowed to have the gun with you for the whole day. Only the
criminals (and cops) carry guns in DC and everyone else is a defenseless
victim. It's not the guns, it's the criminals!
Shame on America for this tragedy for many years this nation has ignored the
warnings of far to much violence in our entertainment. Movies, Videos and
Television and the constant personal attack on politicians in office and those
campaigning for political office. There was a time when a campaign was run on
the principles of fair and respect for those campaigning . A candidate simply
expressed his desire to run on his merits and what he or she wants to accomplish
if elected. No fake news, no personal attacks, no falsifying an opponents
record. No constant violence in America's ads and entertainment industry
that includes stabbing a sitting President and someone holding the fake ISIS
like bloody severed head of the President of the United States. It is time for
prayer and ask for Gods forgiveness for Americas transgressions and years of
violent and nation destroying mandates. Those that allow it share in the
responsibility of this crisis that is sweeping this nation. Tonight I watched
the opening of the Congressional baseball game in Washington DC and the unity
and support showed there was very moving a perfect example of how America must
work. God bless this imperfect nation.

Let's edit a previous post a little. Either way it is written, this is an
excellent example of the kind of rhetoric that leads to things like this and
helps divide our nation:Bernie Sanders supporter attempted to
assassinate Republican leadership at a D.C. Area baseball complex. The Sanders
supporter apparently asked their party affiliation before opening fire on the
Republicans. The rhetoric on social media and right wing media outlets FOX,
HANNITY, LIMBAUGH and others and have been stoking up the fire which eventually
brought out the worst in this politically based shooting. Sanders for his part
condemned the shooting. It could just as easily have been the other
way around. We are a nation divided by politicians who put party over
country and money above common sense. How do we stop it?

@HerbertGravyPlease get the quote correct and in its context:“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,"It was in reference to the Republicans coming after Obama before the 2008
Election. Obama was very calm and collected in the line of Fire from the
republican lies and fake news that was presented against him. It was said
tongue-in-check in reference to the movie The Untouchables. It was probably said
in poor taste with the amount gun violence in the USA, but it was nothing
malicious and/or trying encititing a call to action as YOU are suggesting. All political, religious, workplace, and family groups have those that
are compassionate & those that push the lies and vitriol. It's up to
all of us to get those that are more passionate to calm down and speak
rationally. Freedom of Speech isn't allowed if it's full of lies and
hate. We all could take the time to educate ourselves then educate others when
this happens. Bless our country and the American people. Hopefully
we haven't lost our way with the intervention of Russian values into the
American and the rest of the worlds election system and process. France did a
great job this past election filtering fake news
So they feel vulnerable, shaken and heartbroken? Join the club. But before
paying your membership, those in Congress must ask themselves what they have
done to help create this situation and to perpetuate the same. Do they show real
empathy for low income parents who's children have died at the hands of
violence? Or are these feelings of vulnerability and of feeling shaken newly
discovered because one of their own has been tragically shot and wounded? This begins at the very top. Donald Trump can not encourage a rally
member to hit a protestor saying he will gladly pay their legal fees and then
turn around and demand that we all unite and come together. Likewise--these
"leaders" can not ignore the pain of their constituents, which is what
they are doing every time they fail to work with leaders across the aisle, and
then demand that we behave as brothers. That would be like a boxer entering the
ring and saying he'd like to inflict as much damage as possible and
requesting that his opponent be handcuffed to the turnbuckle before starting

This is horrible. It's terrible that it is so easy to get a gun and shoot
people in this country. We've had Congresspeople and children shot and
often killed before and yet there is nothing done. We even passed laws to
make sure mentally ill people can still get guns. As for the tone of
conversation in this country, I agree that it's horrible. We have a
President who mocked disabled people during his campaign and it just keeps
Mr Trump is reducing regulations. This means more freedom. He is helping small

and fights against people - not metaphorical elections.
I don't condone violence, but for Republicans to play the role of victims
is an affront. It is they who I directly hold responsible for the tone in
politics, going back to Newt Gingrich's tenure and Tom DeLay's K
Street Project, which is still in play today. The Republican response and
attitude towards President Obama, including their supporters calling for his
lynching, and the support of violence by Trump during the campaign, which was
acted upon by his supporters, deepened the atmosphere. And when Trump took
office, he made zero attempt to bring the country together and, in reality, he
has taken many policy steps which harm the average American. Trump has made the
negative environment much worse. So while there are some on the left who go too
far, either in their art, or who resort to violence, I find it offensive when
Republican Members of Congress use pseudo-innocence and claim to be victims.
Every member of Utah's delegation has contributed to the current
environment. There's not a true leader among them.
I think the baseball game should still be played, but in the future the teams

I accept that he and his administration are under investigation for
obstruction of justice and various criminal acts. I accept that
Flynn was forced to resign for criminal acts. I accept that
Trump's Attorney General refused to answer questions but could not actually
say what law, rule, or regulation he was hiding behind. I accept
that Trump's advisors and associates are increasingly revealed to be under
investigation for unlawful acts, that the money trail leads consistently to
Russia. I accept that Trump is increasingly an international
laughingstock. I accept that Trump's own Twitter feed is

I accept all of that, and more.

Re Fabulous JenThis is not a gun problem, this is a people problem.
Murders happened long before the gun was invented.Let us encourage
Democrats to accept the results of this election and stop their bitter
opposition to President Trump. This is the root of this shooting.
Some members of Congress have permits to carry concealed self defense weapons
from their home state. However, the District of Columbia does not recognize
those permits, so members are defenseless in the District and at work. They
must depend on the Capitol Police.Congress can make laws for DC, and
they need to pass one which will recognize concealed carry permits from all
states. Not just for members of Congress, but for all law abiding citizens who
have permits. There are (sadly, but realistically) a lot of people
out there who want to kill other people, either because they are just plain
crazy, or for political or religious reasons or as a side effect of other
criminal activity. Courts have ruled that the police have no duty to protect
any individual, so you have two choices:A- take prudent measures to
provide your own defense options (gun, pepper spray, martial arts) or:B-
accept that you are willing to be a defenseless victim dependent on someone
calling the cops and waiting until they get there to stop an attack.Or, pretend that evil does not exist and if you are nice person no one will
ever attack you.Be prepared!
It's hard to think of partisanship and unity and not recall Sarah Palin,
Ted Nugent, and Kid Rock being invited to Trump's White House and seeing
them smirking in front of Hillary Clinton's portrait. It's
also not hard to recall Jason Chaffetz's Instagram photograph of him
shaking hands with Hillary taken at the inauguration and the smug caption he
wrote under it.This is the in-your-face "get over it"
"we won!" tone that has been set. Hopefully that will stop. It's
not doing the country any good.
This is what happens when one political party and their media push HATE for 8
straight months. God speed for this GOP senator and his quick recovery.
Today was a tragedy. I hope it is also a wake up call to Congress and the
country that we need to unite, focus on what we have in common, and the best
interest of the country. Congress needs to put the country first, not their
party. They need to stop the bi-partisan politics that is out of control on both
sides. Stop telling everyone what you won't do to work with the other
party. Start telling the country what you are willing to do to compromise and
work together in everyone's behalf. There are many unstable people out
there in our society. Don't be cutting mental health services and the
safety net in our society to deal with these kind of people. The
political upheaval, mud slinging, bi-partisan politics, extreme media responses,
and the crap that has come out of the White House since the election helps to
fuel extreme emotions and cause these kind of things. Congress, the White House,
media, and the country in general need to be promoting peace and working
together. The Democrats and Republicans need to do something about the
extremists in their parties. They are the problem as well.
A tragic event!
It doesn't help matters when Kathy Griffin holds up bloody heads of a
president, and only fuels the fire for the mentally ill in this country to
justify their actions with violence. We need to quit rioting at rallies and
shouting at town meetings, and return to proper decorum, diplomacy, discretion,
and decency, or more of these events will happen. We can disagree without being
disagreeable. What kind of role model do we give our children when they see mom
and dad screaming like babies in public? We have some of the best gun rights and
regulations in the world, yet the kooks continue to terrorize and play havoc
with our quiet, secure lives. Every time a new one occurs, it just revitalizes
the gun debate, and nothing changes. Let's keep all those injured in this
tragic event in our prayers.
Today's shooting in Arlington was chilling and I am so sad. The Second
Amendment means a great deal to me but I hope Republicans can take a look at gun
availability. An A+ rating from the NRA means a great deal but we need to take
another look at the human cost. This should not be a great day for gun
manufacturers but I am sure that it has been.
This is not a matter of free speech or a political statement. The wingnut who
perpetrated this mess was mentally ill and became a danger to society and had
focused on politics as a way to take out his mentally disturbed angst on
society. All day today, I haven’t been able to get away from all the hype
out there that this tragedy was a political statement where the president is to
blame. Enough! The perp was nuts in the first place. I feel bad for those who
were shot as well as their families. I sincerely hope that those who were
injured or shaken up by what happened a speedy recovery and I hope their
charity game is a success.
This is not the day to be snarky, snippy or just plain angry. We need to come
together. A very sad day for us all.

This is a sick, despicable act. What is even more sickening for me is that it
appears he carried out this act as a political statement. I don't care how
much someone dislikes Donald Trump. This is not who we are as a people. Yeah, he could have been mentally ill. And we should be working to
ensure that the mentally ill don't have access to assault rifles. But
regardless, we all need to be turning down the vitriol.
Left or Right, conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat or independent,

these types of acts is likely dealing with mental or emotional issues that have

political tone which led to this, the antidote should be compassion and unity
