I was competing in a high school track meet many years ago when something took place that I'll never forget.

A boy with Down Syndrome ran 400 meters in 104 seconds. We all knew that was a very slow time but once everyone realized the boy had Down Syndrome, we all circled the track and cheered him on.

As an athlete, I have seen many incredible performances. But nothing will be able to match what that boy did that day.

When people base their entire self-worth on their athletic achievements, there is so much in life that they are missing.

That was the lesson I got from watching that boy that day.
