How dare Gary O use this article as a basis to attack the pioneer culture of Utah? Does he not realize that Twain was a satirist who was trying to sell books? And the attempt to disparage US Grant by lumping those two together is not factually accurate. We could definitely use a General Grant today.

Grant visited Utah after his good friend, Mark Twain, published "Roughing it," a memoir of Twain's western travels, including his time in Utah.

Grant wanted to see for himself if Utah was as odd as Twain made it out to be.

Mark Twain was unfavorably impressed by Utah. His remarks about Mormon women seem especially mean.

    What does "slatternly" mean anyway?
