Perhaps the relevance of the photo is that this young woman had a lifestyle that was not conducive to raising a new baby and that the child would interfere with that lifestyle. It is reminiscent of the Casey Anthony case in Florida where there was a real lack of natural affection for the victim in this case a newborn baby girl.

Yet no one else on her block managed to figure it out either? There is pregnant and there is fat. You can't always be the expert. If she is always wearing a larger shirt on around her parents they would not know. They are not in the picture.

This photo is important to this case, because the girl/woman is obviously pregnant AND near-term.
YET, her parents didn't notice she was pregnant? In a tiny little home in Kearns?

There's a lot more that SHOULD BE revealed.

All you parents out there who have never made a parenting mistake, or who have never been clueless about what your child is capable of doing, or who have at some point not known where your young adult was one night, you can cast the first stone at these parents. You can't hold a special needs adult down all of the time, especially if they are capable of walking on their own and want to be treated more mature than they are. There are too many unknown factors here to pass judgement.

    Hey it's me,

She was in special ed environment and the school facilitated a job for her. She has to have some medical/mental difficulty to get special ed and get job help of that nature. It is just not announced.

The st George mom didn't sit in jail whose baby died. I am asking for similar compassion before people rush to judge. She managed to have a babysitter for her boys while she did her nails, but not the baby. I do get it. She thought she left baby at home and the baby was inside all that times change of routine is what caused a tragedy. We weren't asking for the state to remove the other children and give the to someone on the LSD family services waiting list. Yet we have no ability to problem solve the real issues in this case that lead to a child being left in a garbage can, or even what led to the conception. Holding a beer bottle does not mean you have the mental capacity to murder someone, or even consent to get pregnant.

I'm thinking that parental responsibility is a thing of the past.

Yes of course. Because nearly every parent is doing these types of things now. Ridiculous. The vast majority of parents are very responsible. Reading stories from history there are many where parents did horrible things to their children but still the vast majority of parents were responsible. Everyone thinks that the days of history were better than the present and it's just not true.

@ K It has yet to be determined that she has a disability! She is 23 and her mom said she has never been officially diagnosed with anything! (Make sure you read all the articles pertaining to this. The problem with drinking a beer when your pregnant is that it is child abuse or neglect. She wasn't disabled enough to know she was pregnant. She said she hid it from her mom and dad because she was afraid of telling them. (That doesn't sound disabled. She also said she thought if she killed the baby all her problems would be better. So clearly she thought about the situation. Can't wait to see why she hasn't been diagnosed till she was 23 maybe! By the way, just because you can't read or write doesn't mean you can't think properly, I know because I worked with students as an Aide in all three levels of school. Some of my students could read or spell anything correctly but they still had thinking and decision making skills.

K, the point is that the girl was pregnant. She should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Plus her parents are only making excuses for her. K's comments the other day were not kind to say the least.

Frankly, I'm disappointed that this is being featured on the front page of the Deseret News website. I'm not sure why the fact that the police are using this photo is newsworthy, since it has nothing to do with the charges against this young woman. I'm sure she will endure plenty of humiliation and regret over the weeks and months to come. The prosecution will paint a picture of her as an irresponsible young mother. There is no reason why the Deseret News should do the same.

Patriot, has it been determined that she did give consent?

Has the extent of her disability been determined? Perhaps she didn't even know she was pregnant.

Can we stop with the blame until the facts are determined?

NO way should the family get the baby! That's insanity. If she's mentally handicapped enough to not know she's pregnant or what to do, then the parents should have kept a closer eye on her. If they can't even take care of their 1 handicapped daughter, if that's too much for them; there's no way they could handle a baby that may have countless medical problems. Keep the poor child away from that house.

I agree with K. Ignorance is bliss. I would hope we are better than Texas when it comes to incarcerating or executing those with the mental capacity of a child. Having worked in a care facility and seen first hand the ability of a 230 lb 30 year old person with the mind of an 8 year old who thinks they can drive, have sex and don't have mental disabilities.

This behavior by authorities and the media is a slap in the face with parents of children with disabilities and the disabled. Are the authorities and the public completely clueless when it comes to people with a mental challenge? She got in and alcoholic cause she had ID saying she is legally old enough. A person with the mental capacity of an 8 year old is capable of dancing and drinking out of a bottle or open cup. You have no idea no easy it is for someone to get a person with a disability to do something. Highly suggestible.

Even if she were not disabled the family should get the baby.

Holding a bottle of beer does mean a person is capable of murder under the definition.

I'm thinking that parental responsibility is a thing of the past. Girl didn't know what she was doing, but she knew how to party and drink while pregnant. I hope the baby will be kept safe and not returned to her.

Seems the daughter was mentally sound enough to MAKE that baby.

And if she was not mentally sound, then how could she give consent to have sex?

The picture above sure looks to me that she is having a great time (no remorse).

It makes one wonder why the baby wasn't taken at birth and placed in protective custody - the hospital and doctor already have her medical records.

Now there may be new issues. Now the Doctors may be looking at fetal alcohol syndrome. This story keeps getting worse. We go from outrage over a baby being dumped in the trash, to sympathy because the mom is special needs and may have been abused and didn't understand the ramifications of her actions, and she's lonely and frightened in a jail cell. Now I think if she's getting herself to a club and drinking and living it up (as these photos suggest) she has to have more intelligence and awareness of herself and her actions than we gave her credit for yesterday. Police say they are determining if the photos are relevant to the case - I'd say I sure hope they are.
