Great start to the game! Until the penalties started...ugghh

    By the way, read an interesting tidbit about the BYU - UCONN game, from UCONN perspective;
"There will be the figurative bright lights of ESPN, as BYU is the opponent and the game will be carried live coast to coast on national television. It is a big, big spot for UConn football. Maybe it would have been better to start with an FCS team or a MAC team or a team UConn could realistically beat. Instead, UConn starts with a BYU team that won 8 games last year, felt like it should have won 10 and is an early two-touchdown favorite...Having a national brand like BYU as the opener will provide momentum. The game should undoubtedly be a sellout, as BYU travels well, the UConn fan base is excited and the ESPN exposure will help."

Amazing the perspective of non-utah folks... "National brand", "ESPN", "Sellout crowd" etc. This team played in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl and they agreed on the home-home soon after, while still a Power Conference team.

Mendenhall needs to let AJ Moore play. Williams will be a name of the past if Moore can have a chance.

"I didn't even know UCON had a football team."

They were in a BCS bowl not to long ago before hitting a slump and disappearing from the national conversation. Ute fans should empathize.

ESPN National TV during Primetime, baby! During College Football Opening Weekend! Now BYU just has to get it done in CT.

    ...if o-line protects Taysom
    - if Taysom stays healthy
    - and if Taysom does not play running back, esp now Williams is out ...
then byu might win ...goooooo Cougarssss!

We might think you actually believed that if you weren't so obsessed with commenting on Utah stories.

Congratulations Utes! You have started your extremely tough schedule by beating a bowl subdivision team who hasn't won a road game against anyone in almost 10 years. My flag football team would probably look just as impressive against them too.

I'm worried about all the suspensions for this first game. Without knowing for sure, I worry that BYU is too often quick to suspend someone without considering other punishments. Things like requiring school or community service, extra class time or credits, etc. should also be considered. Suspensions not only punish the player, they punish the whole team and an entire fan base that didn't have anything to do with the infraction. Sure wish minor offenses would be assigned other forms of punishment!

    Literally laughed...well done!

BYU just needs to go out and play ball tonight. Don't worry about last year, don't worry about suspensions, just go out and play ball and you'll be fine.

    BYU 38
    UConn 17

We traveled out to UCON for tonight's game.. We are pretty excited, the people her are very nice but we want a win! They have all been saying they wish BYU was further east so that we could be in a conference with them.

I agree kugrlover. In fact I heard that internet thingy was invented by the same guy who invented cold fusion at the U.

Cougars win tonight by 2 touchdowns and shake that nasty season opener from last year...

I know all Ute fans thirst for knowledge, so let me educate you. UCONN does indeed have a football team. In fact, a BCS bowl team. I am sitting here watching a replay on ESPN Classic of the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, in which the Huskies acquitted themselves well before finally losing to an OU team that featured DeMarco Murray, Ryan Broyles etc.

If you don't believe me you can look it up on the internet - you know - that thing which was no doubt invented by someone up on the hill. I hear it's gonna be the next big thing.

Only worried about "trolls"? Comment boards are meant to be fun. Who has a complex if all you can think about is what someone says about your team? Better worry about Uconn as they are world beaters.

Predict byu will squeak it out by 6 and the world will be fine on their way to a BCS game.

Predict USU will neat TN tomorrow.

Don't specify " opener"...uConn is one of TSDS's better opponents. They end with Savannah State...

    Nationally respected...

    Go Utes

Cougs, get rid of those opening game jitters and have a great game. It will be fund to watch especially in person. We should out number the Uconn fans - it is not BBall.

I don't think you can overestimate Williams value to the offense. I do think they will be fine at the running game, but Williams absence is significant. BYU wins by 13 and starts it's run at a 11-1,may be a 12-0 season.

I love this quote by the UCONN Coach, previously at Notre Dame. Just another example that the trolls on these BYU articles are blowing jealous words to make themselves feel better. The coach said,

“We expect a nationally branded BYU team that over the last 20 or 30 years, hard-pressed to find a better organization and university in the country,” Diaco said.

A nationally respected brand. I agree, it would be hard to find a better organization and University in the country.

The UConn game will be an eye opener for a lot of people. Specifically, they will realize that the loss of Williams is not as big of a loss as they thought.

The irrefutable fact is that the combination of Hine, Lasike, and Brown will be just as effective as Williams, if not even more effective. Those three have skills that will more than compensate for Williams' absence.

There is no doubt that Williams accomplished a lot last year. But there is no doubt that he monopolized the vast majority of the carries.

Any one of the other running backs would have been just as effective if given the same number of carries. Don't forget that Hine out rushed Williams in the Idaho State game, on fewer carries. BYU will be just fine.
