Safety first or not, this is an adorable photo of an innocent child and one of
my favorite creatures: a goat.

Although cute, this is a terrible picture to put in the paper. I am an official
in our county's fair and we work very hard to educate the public about
consumer safety. People have gotten sick from contact with fair
animals and the animals can be harmed by the germs that people carry. A child
should never be encouraged to kiss a strange animal. Not only is it not
sanitary, but the child could be bitten. Common sense isn't as
typical as some would like to think. We can blame the litigious American
society, but safety should always be our top consideration, whether we worry
about getting sued or not. Knowledge increases, practices change and people who
work in agriculture need to be more vigilant than ever. Pictures like the one
in the article promote unsafe practices and an unhealthy view of what animals
