"Utah WILL go bowling - you can mark that down."

The smart money will go against the Utes, now that you have cursed them.

"If Utah doesn't go bowling I'll never say another negative thing about byu ever. That's how sure I am!"

Nah, Chris, we know you better. You'll just rename yourself and keep on jivin' everyone.

Say's the "fan" of the team that just brought in a guy that hadn't played in a year, never had an offer from anyone, and they saw him running in the park with some other guys. lol

"have resorted to bringing in a bunch of people on the outside chance one or two might make a small difference."

Says the 'fan' of the team bringing in more failed transfers that any other mid-major. lol

"Shouldn't that read 'Pace' as in picante sauce"

Careful there, samg. Roscoe may appropriate that for this year's t-shirt slogan.

The reason they are new names is because they are for the most part players no one else wanted, if they were some huge infusion of talent then they would have all signed with schools last february.

Frankly the fact utah felt the need to bring in so many 'flyers' makes it appear that they are not happy with what they have and have resorted to bringing in a bunch of people on the outside chance one or two might make a small difference.

it is interesting that you would interpret it as some huge influx of difference makers, although not surprising and definitely funny.

I hope it all comes together this year. Our defense has remained solid for a decade, but we need the offense to step up and do their part. Go Utes!!

FYI an interesting development: Yesterday the SL Tribune just blogged the names of 16 new players added to the Utah Spring roster..... These individuals were not listed on any previous team roster, in effect a massive major infusion of new skills and new options for the U.

While too early to tell how quickly these new players will fold into the depth chart this Fall, it appears to be offer a significant positive change in a variety of performance groups.

Particularly interesting will be where they ultimately reside on the depth chart, given the U's ability to reset/refit players to fit depth chart needs.

And now pretty much incontrovertible, no matter the slanted blogs declaring the opposite: P5 and PAC12 membership DOES indeed make a difference, folks.

Kudos to the U recruiters and coaches!! Great job, guys!

    ---- Go UTES!!!!!

    not in utah

"They seem to be limping to the finish line, but better resources for recruiting will change that over time."

See Colorado, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Washington St., and many others which have had "better resources" for decades.

Some programs are simply destined to live off the gravy train as perennial power conference bottom dwellers without ever making any progress toward actually becoming one of the big boys.

Utah will get better, it's all about the depth chart. USU has a great first string, but probably a much steeper dropoff to the 2nd string vs the P5 teams. That's fine if you play a bunch of slower 190 pound MWC linebackers all season, you can mostly stay healthy. But when you're playing 6'4" 235 lb super fast linebackers every week against P5 teams it takes a toll. If USU or BYU played 10 straight P5 teams they'd be on their 6th string by year end. That's what Utah has learned these first few seasons. They seem to be limping to the finish line, but better resources for recruiting will change that over time.

The problem for the Utes is winning conference road games. You are competitive with almost anyone at home, but on the road the Utes are consistently flat. In fact, the Utes were 0-4 on the road last season vs. conference opponents and since joining the conference the Utes are 3-10 on the road (Wins @ CU, WSU, and AZ).

Look at this years road schedule- Stanford, OSU, ASU, UCLA, Mich. All are probable losses. And although you have both Oregon and USC at home, those are 2 more probable losses bringing the grand total to 7. Since an upset on the road is improbable, the Utes would need to upset either USC or Oregon at home... Good luck.

IMO 5-7 would be a successful season for the UTES. If Whittingham can survive, I think you will have a winning season in 2015 with Stanford and Oregon missing from your schedule, and a favorable home schedule.

Win/loss is great, but it's also the product on the field. In the coming years how many future top pros will Ute fans get to see in person vs BYU fans? We already know there are more than three times as many Utes than Cougars in the NFL alone, add up the future Bruins, Trojans, Ducks, Cardinal, Wolverines... and it's a far more memorable game day experience, even better if Utah can win some of those. What brings out the fans more, seeing Lebron or Durant put up 40 on the Jazz in a loss, or watching the Jazz beat up on whoever plays for Sacramento or Orlando. And it is fun to mock BYU's schedule, but sadly Mid Tenn St and UConn actually have way more pros in then NFL than BYU does. Which might show where BYU is headed.

I'm looking forward to Nov 8th. It will be my first trip to Rice Eccles and it's going to be epic. There won't be many Duck fans in the stands but we're notoriously loud! Good luck to the Utes, and I agree with a couple other commentators, I think the Utes will have a surprising season and compete for the South Division. Is it Aug 28th yet? I love this time of year.

“So we’re determined to get ourselves back on track this year and get things headed back in the right direction,” [Whittingham] said.

It looks like even Coach Whittingham agrees that Utah has been off-track and headed in the wrong direction.

    @frantic and emotional,

Great description of your fanbase. The angst has been delicious the past couple years as we see byu being left in the dust with every other mid major as the P5 form our own division and own rules and own playoffs.

Utah WILL go bowling - you can mark that down.

If Utah doesn't go bowling I'll never say another negative thing about byu ever. That's how sure I am!

    Go Utes!!

Getting beaten like drum by the big boys in November until we get to our epic season finale, the always exciting stumble in Rockies to determine who gets to spend the off-season in the conference basement.

I get a kick out of Utah fans mocking a program that has played in twice as many bowls and has had more than three times as many AP Top 25 finishes as that little regional school on the hill.

The think the Utes are playing low-key...they're gonna rocket this this season.

The "play fast, with urgency" offense.

Honestly I don't care how fast Utes offense is as long as it is efficient. Better 3rd down conversion rate, and less 3rd downs will be key. I found it very interesting that in the conversation with Dres, he said they have had up tempo offenses, but have never implemented them like they will this year...IMO he seemed to regret what he had said. Should be interesting to see the offense take shape and I hope to see many many articles about Kendall since I am away in Virginia.

You had better hope that byU gets to a bowl game this year! I mean, with a SOS hovering around 100, you have to give the seniors something to look forward to, even if it is the worst bowl game of the year that even the MAC turned down. Savannah St for senior day? That has to be the BIGGEST disappointment in their football careers - well, second biggest disappointment after never being able to beat their bitter rivals anyway.

I still get a kick out of byU "fans" who mock a school they are 3-8 against at HOME in the last 20+ years and only have one win on the road since 2000!!

BTW - "improving" is a word I would use lightly when referring to byU's horribly inept 2014 schedule.

Go Utes!! Playing with the big boys at home in November while byU plays with the kiddies!

Welcome to the Utah article, coug fans. You guys want to keep your news within the family (probably because the news has been embarrassing lately) but we welcome coug fans.

I agree with 2013 Ute Seniors SWEEP byU 4-0, this year's Ute squad will be a pleasant surprise. Another year playing against elite competition at home and on the road. It just doesn't get any better than this...unless of course we start winning games! :)

    Onward and upward, Utes!!!

Utes have great kickers. Their whole special teams are a delight to watch. While the rest of the team isn't up to big boy football standards they are making progress.

Coach Christensen is going to get our NASCAR offense running.

He had already proven he can put up 30-35 points at least against power conference teams. He is going to take a lot of pressure off the defense to do everything.

We are going to be the surprise team of the PAC 12

Utah 7-5. I guarantee we will be going to th best bowl of any team in Utah.

    Go utes!
    Go PAC 12

"The Utes want to play fast and there’s a great sense of urgency..."

hmmm, though grammatically awkward, it sounds very similar to a phrase that was mocked incessantly by the hill crowd last season.

"Back-to-back 5-7 campaigns ended a nine-year bowl run for the program. Uncharacteristic, Whittingham acknowledged."

    au contraire Mr. Whittingham

Before Utah's nine-year bowl run began, the Utes had only play in 8 bowl games in the previous 40 years.

btw, BYU will play in their 10th straight bowl game this season, improving on BYU's 2nd longest bowl streak.

Seems like we hear this every year.

I have an idea, how about keeping an offensive coordinator for more than one season so that they can let their system actually work?
