All relationships are important to God! There is no need to compare heterosexual marriages to same sex marriages! One does not have to be important and the other not! Gay people are important to God! In his eyes, we are not considered inferior as many people would treat us!
It is sad, the way people expect to accept their degrading ideas about how we fit into God's plan. God created us! We didn't choose to be gay, which allows us to know that God made us gay! I have been with my partner 15 years. My relationship is as important to God as that of any other human being on Earth! I have learned to love and sharing my life with someone is a gift that God gave to me!
We have had to deal with the degradation others dish out all of our lives! I am 48 years old! I know God loves me! It is truly sad that others have to tear us down! It truly has been wonderful being with Mark! I know God approves by the way I feel inside!

RE: The image of God is the married couple — not just the man, not just the woman, but both.”

“male and female he created them” is an interpretation of “God created man in his own image.”

This is the particular dignity ascribed to the sex relationship. Man is said to be after the image of God, not as regards his body, but as regards that whereby he excels other animals. Hence, when it is said, Let us make man in our image and likeness, it is added, And let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea (Genesis 1.26). Now man excels all animals by his reason and intelligence; hence it is according to his intelligence and reason, which are incorporeal, that man is said to be according to the image of God. "St Thomas"

The early Church Fathers were quite agreed that the image of God in man consisted primarily in man’s rational and moral characteristics, and in his capacity for holiness ….” This approach, which locates the content of the imago Dei in qualities that man possesses, has been developed and systematized in the orthodox theology of the Catholic Church.

    Thank you Pope Francis.

This does not contain "hate speech." There is a real need for people who are taking things way to personally about why people are standing up for traditional marriage.

This is not a personal attack! Please understand that. We are all wonderful people!

Why is there this mis-perception that hetero marriage cannot coexist with SSM? The two are not mutually exclusive. When SSM is legal in all 50 states, it will not hinder hetero couples from getting married. Nor will SSM alter any existing hetero marriages.

People are going to interpret the Pope's comments as they wish. I interpret his comments not as a condemnation of SSM but rather as an encouragement to hetero couples to get married and once married, to keep their marriages strong and intact.

I'm hetero, married 20 years with 3 children. My marriage is not threatened by SSM. My 3 hetero children's some day marriages are not and will not be threatened by SSM. On the contrary, allowing SSM will serve to reinforce the message that committed relationships via marriage are beneficial to the stability of society. Same sex couples are going to have relationships either way. Without SSM, their relationships will be limited to "shacking up". We should be encouraging marriage over shacking up for all loving couples.

He's got one of those jobs where you pretty much have to stick to the company line.

I know people on both sides of the gay marriage debate are going to read a lot into this but frankly as someone that supports same sex marriage these comments do not really bother me. He stated his beliefs about marriage in context of his religion and religious beliefs, he did not call for civil laws to reflect his beliefs or diminish those that are gay. If more people could learn to draw that line we there would be a lot less unnecessary contention in our culture.
