Good article and sound advice. I think you have a great point of double checking the software calculations and imports. This year when I filed through H&R Block online service I noticed that the software program thought I had over contributed to my HSA based on filing as a single, when was filing as married filing jointly (so I was still under the limit). The program was going to charge me the tax plus a penalty. After calling several people, no one could answer my question unless I wanted to go into an office and pay someone to do the taxes. I ended up just looking up another free filing service on IRS.gov and did my federal tax there for free and my Utah filing for free on the Utah tax website at taxexpress.utah.gov. It ended up working out great that way.
