I understand your point and agree but I think you have to factor in the other side as well:

BYU averaged almost 17 ft makes per game on a 72.6% average, so they attempted over 20 per game and yet only had 5 attempts in this game. I think that ft attempts is a decent indicator, on average, of a team's general aggressiveness with inside play and drives to the basket.

Every officiating crew is different, and each conference can be different as well. The WCC officiating crews tend to call a lot of fouls generally each game, and I expect calls to be different in the tournament- but for the season BYU's opponents averaged 14.1 ft makes per game on 73.9%.

By the ft numbers BYU and their opponents were pretty even during the season. Every game is different and I know that things change based on the level of competition- and the competition here was as good as it gets.

Good win over A&M- now go get Stanford!

wyoming cougar, thank you for a level-headed and non-whiny explanation of your thoughts on it. With discrepancies in fouls and free throws, it's not unusual for the fans on the short end to feel jobbed. But these types of discrepancies are pretty typical for UConn, not because of referee favoritism, just because they play smarter. Consider this:

In the 10 games ESPN has box scores on, BYU averaged 19.6 fouls per game. Their lowest total was 12. They had 19 in this game.

UConn averages 11.8 per game. Their lowest: 5 (and there were several other single-digit games). Their highest: 19 vs then-number 3 Stanford. This game: 9. The fact is, they just don't foul that often.

But thank you, it's been a very fun season to watch. I love the fact that Geno doesn't take down the nets until the final game, and I hope they can enjoy that next week! The men's team has just been incredible, Shabazz Napier is very fun to watch emerge from Kemba Walker's shadow this year. Good luck to your Cougars, friend, and Go Huskies!!

    re: UCONN

I in no way want to take credit away from UCONN- they are simply amazing, and awesome to watch. Their run in women's basketball has been nothing short of a dynasty and it's incredible the way they keep going.

Also, very impressed with the men's team this year. Have to admit I didn't see that coming- they busted my bracket by beating MSU.

That said, however- the officiating was suspect, as even the announcers commented about. It did not change the outcome of the game, but ~20 free throw attempts to 5 for the game is a very large discrepancy. [And you can not tell me that if those numbers are the same in the championship game against Notre Dame (with the Huskies on the short end) and you end up losing that you wouldn't question it.] Beating UCONN is a near impossibility, made even more difficult when several of your star players miss extended stretches due to foul trouble (and your bench plays almost as many minutes as they did in the first 2 tournament games combined).

When all is said and done though, congratulations UCONN! and Go Huskies in the rest of the tournament.

"You're telling me UConn fans weren't at all concerned when the Huskies fell behind by their largest deficit this season, only led by one at the half (and very nearly could have been trailing), and trailed in the second half for the first time this season."

Concerned? No, there was still 19 minutes and 27 seconds left in the game when BYU last held the lead. Attentive? Yes, for a rare occasion.

I am a UConn/BYU fan. Living here in Connecticut, I've seen most of the Lady Huskies (and the men as well) on TV. BYU played UConn as tough as anyone in the first half. I've never seen a team rattle UConn the way BYU did. I feel bad for Texas A&M because UConn will come out and respond to the poor game they had against BYU. The thing people need to realize is BYU caused much of what UConn struggled in the first half. If BYU had played like they did yesterday they would have had an even better season than they did and it was a good season to begin with. In short, congrats to the Cougars and UConn.

"There really never was much of a scare now was there?"

You're telling me UConn fans weren't at all concerned when the Huskies fell behind by their largest deficit this season, only led by one at the half (and very nearly could have been trailing), and trailed in the second half for the first time this season.

Sure, the Huskies eventually pulled away to a comfortable win, but whether you're willing to admit it, or not, the table was set for a monumental upset if BYU had been able to knock down a few more 3s in the second half.

Ed in atl (in Duluth), whatever helps you sleep at night. Whether you want to give them any credit or not, I'm pleased to watch both men's and women's teams keep playing today and tomorrow. Take care, guy. Go Huskies!

I agree with Tators & Carolina K that the referee's were a little suspect. There were some ticky tack calls and no calls made. The only disrespect was to the Cougars, UCONN from Storrs. And on August 29th, the Cougars will take care of business.

esodije, I hope to see them prove you wrong next week. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that they haven't really played any games that have gone down to the last couple minutes (well, Baylor kind of was), where Notre Dame's had 2. I don't think they'll shoot from the perimeter this poorly again, though, which is where they are accustomed to getting a lot of scoring.

For people complaining about officials: two teams put their seasons on the line and played a tough game. Taking anything away from that is disrespectful to both teams.

I kinda know this feeling. My HS team was in the Utah 3A state final in 1990 against a team nobody gave us a chance against (Shawn Bradley's Emery team). We gave them a better game than anyone else had in the tournament, and were within a few points late in the game, but still ended up on the wrong side of the score. BYU's women should feel great about their season, but I know from experience these games sting for a long time.

BYU lost, but they rattled UConn enough for me to predict the latter isn't going to win it all this year.

    March 29, 2014 6:44 p.m.

Previous to this game, UConn had been beating their NCAA tournament games by an average of 41 points per game. So to lose by under 20 points is actually quite commendable.

The Associated Press (AP) game summary article said BYU gave UConn its first real test of the tournament in being the only team all year to have a lead over UConn in the 2nd half of the game and by trailing by only 1 point at halftime.

Also, BYU's 6 point first half lead was UConn's biggest deficit of their entire season. In addition, BYU beat the Las Vegas point spread by 14 points.... something that seldom happens in college basketball. BYU had 19 fouls called against them to only 7 against UConn.

Overall, an unexpectedly impressive game by the Lady Cougars.

    Big 12

It's laughable that a BYU hater is hanging her hat on BYU finally wearing down in the 2nd half.

BYU held the largest lead (+6) over UConn this season and is the ONLY team to hold a lead over the Huskies in the 2nd half this season.

Unlike the men's and women's teams on the hill, BYU at least made to the Big Dance, and the BYU women gave one of the most dominant women's teams in NCAA history a real scare, before eventually losing.

What a great game. Am an NCSU fan. Loved watching THurl Bailey play in 83 and fun watching his niece play now. Byu is a great team. Remind me of VIrginia Men's team - efficient, patient. . I thought the game turned on bad ref calls. Looks like there is big pressure to have UConn play ND and the refs helped it happen. BYU is well coached and just fun to watch. As an ACC fan, I know some good Bball when I see it and BYU women's BBall is REAL good bBALL.

Good showing for the Cougars - led UConn by 6 in the first half (largest deficit of the season for UConn) and first team all season to have a lead over the Huskies in the 2nd half.

Congratulations to the BYU Lady Cougars on a great season!

Great job, ladies of BYU! 33 point underdogs and, as I said to BYU fan before the game, I thought the over/under points for BYU was 30! BYU had the largest lead on Conn. for the year to date and led in the second half. Players, coaches, and BYU fans can hold their head high and be proud, IMO!

Outcome is no surprise. The Cougs played with toughness. Had they played just average in the 1st half, a likely ten point lead would have made a big difference in the second half.

Proud of the team and coaches!

Cougs having a real hard time taking care of the ball, especially Eaton, otherwise BYU would be leading by double digits. Shooting lights out is keeping them n the game.
    Foul calls extremely lopsided.
