I think the women's gymnastic team outdraws their men's basketball team by good measure.

It would take about 15 women's basketball games at BYU (and maybe more) to get the same crowd as one Utah's gymnastic meets.

Yes, BYU is in the Sweet 16 and deserve praise. But the U gymnastic team is a national powerhouse year in and year out, has a bigger actual fan base, and has even won national titles.

To the people that say it's about there not being much interest and then comparing it to lacrosse or other sports, I'm afraid you don't know much of what you're talking about. Utah Gymnastics is wildly popular. They get more fans to their meets than any woman's sport in the entire country. They sell out the 15,000 seat Huntsman Center. There is really no logical reason to not give quality coverage to a sport that has a HUGE following.

It's not just the Deseret News. For some reason ESPN decided the BYU women's basketball game was interesting enough to run in prime time. I don't think they talked about gymnastics or even showed highlights. Opinionated was right. They people who care were there.

Pendergast, if golf is "a good walk spoiled," then baseball is a good nap spoiled.

"Not many other people are interested in gymnastics."

Not true. I attended a U of U gymnastics meet this season and there were 15,000+ in attendance. That is hardly "not many people interested".

Anyway, I too was disappointed in the lack of excitement in the Deseret News coverage of this.

I watched both sessions of the PAC-12 gymnastic championships on television on Saturday and also have season tickets at the U, along with season tickets to the football games.
That said- Utah WON the PAC-12 championship- the first PAC 12 championship won by any sport in Utah history; and won it convincingly. It should have been front page in bold letters above the fold. The coverage on the local news channels was also disappointing. More of an "oh yeah, by the way..." kind of reporting toward the end of the sports reporting. Very disappointing!

People vote with their wallets and unfortunately college gymnastics isn't winning in the sports arena. One could say the same thing about rugby, lacrosse or wrestling. Football and basketball rule! Baseball and volleyball are runners up in the public popularity contest in which gymnastics
    must compete for public support.

Most people who are interested already know the outcome because they were there in person to see it. Not many other people are interested in gymnastics. Sorry, just the facts.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that BYU and the DN are owned by the same entity, while the U is a gentile institution.

Well it's not like people are inter...oh, right, Utah gymnastics has the NCAA season average attendance record for any women's team.
