Being a legislator is mostly hard work, with interminable meetings(and the free lunches and other gifts), 16-hour days (mostly spent grandstanding), hundreds of constituent emails and phone calls (which are largely ignored unless you are a donor or Gayle Ruzicka), and news stories focused more on the controversial and the dysfunctional(that the legislature creates themselves) than on the rational and the purposeful (very rare, we need those "message bills" after all). It is public service indeed (more like private enrichment).

It's not liberty. It's their "entitlement."

Yes, but what about health care?

These hardly seem to be the most substantive issues the Legislature needed to address. Unfortunately, anything of substance seems to get the "kick the can down the road" treatment. Only minor issues that don't upset the rural legislators seem to be passed, while urban issues seldom get any traction.

"their annual 45-day imprisonment in the Utah State Capitol"

Otherwise known as....their jobs. As in, what the rest of us pay their salaries and pensions for.....

Just remember: requiring employers to provide health insurance for their employees is eeevil socialism. But taxpayer-provided health benefits and full pensions for state legislators who work 45 days a year is liberty.

Unlimited amounts of money to purchase some legislation you want passed is still legal. Oh, excuse me, free speech. Even though there is nothing free about it.

Officers are required to impound cars belonging to uninsured drivers? Party time at the tow companies!

Dan, you forgot that we have a new state tree! Let's not worry about the 60,000 without insurance, the half-billion dollars of our taxes we won't get back because the legislature hates Obama, the dirtiest air in the nation, $2 million blood money to kill off the sage grouse, not to mention the most jam-packed elementary school classes in the nation... we should be "grateful" for this?
