@criscob Utah was just mentioned on ESPN when Onwas dunk was listed as one of the top 10 plays.

BTW, I also think that Coach Rose is finally getting to be a little better coach too. He seems to have adapted his approach, ever since bringing in Matt Carlino off the bench and in not starting Erik Mika. In the first half of the season, it was easy to see the weaknesses in his team's sets. Now he is beginning to make more adjustments on the fly. Keep it up Coach!

Uh, unless BYU goes 3 and 0 in the WCC tourney, I's rather see them in the NIT too, where they could win 2 or 3 more games or so. I'd like for Erik Mika to get a little more game-time experience before he goes off on his mission, and I'd love to see Nate Austin crash the boards several more times before he goes off to Europe or China to play pro-ball.

But if the Cougs can win it all at the WCC, then I think they deserve a spot in the big dance, even if it is only a one and done situation. There's nothing like the experience that they would get there. And it sends the signal that they are building, even with the crazy system of guys coming and going, then coming back again. No other school does what the 'Y' does and it seems that Dave Rose is finally making the system work to the team's advantage. With success, comes more interest and success in recruiting. Maybe a guy like a "Jabari Parker" would be more inclined to play in Provo.

Scooter "Chris B I can think of another team I can't remember ESPN talking about in the last 10 years (You got it, Utah)"

Don't watch TV much? This past week the Utes had a player showcased in the top ten plays of the day - twice.

Also, I'm sure ESPN mentioned Utah after they pounded BYU earlier in the season.

Well, if the comment is true that lots of guys have career games against BYU, guess what? BYU is playing lousy defense, no matter their record. In 30 games, I can see 2-4 opponents with career nights; if it's actually so many that even the players notice, then clearly defense needs to be the focus of practice between now and tournament time.

I agree with coach Rose, four or five weeks ago BYU probably loses this game against SDU. They have become much stronger as a team in crunch time. Another thing that I really liked was the fantastic display of good sportsmanship right after the game. The coaches and players went over and slapped hands and talked to the injured player from SDU. That is a sign of a real class act. That says a lot about BYU's coaches and players. A great example for all of us to follow.

Utah mentioned on ESPN? Check ESPN Sports Center over the last two weeks. Ute Princeton Onwas has been featured in two top ten terrific dunks against top 25 teams.

Chris B must be a closet BYU fan. Why else would he bother to watch a whole game and make up-to-the-minute posts?

I can't remember the last time I used my valuable time to watch a Utah game of any kind...

Come on @chris. The Utes are so bad, even the tribune has BYU's victory over the Lonely Toreros as their main heading on the sports page. Obviously no one cares bout the utes big win over the mighty PAC 12 rival Colorado

Now be honest, who really saw Collinsworth making a pressured three point shot as the decisive shot of the game? Truthfully, my jaw just dropped but I was so glad he made it.

Hopefully, he wont start doing that as part of the regular offense though.

    Good game BYU.

I hope your team, the Pac 12ers, gets an invite somewhere. It would be sad to not be able to have a post season in the two most prestigious sports.

I think Crisb has selective memory disorder. Those mighty Toreros beat his Utes in a non-conference tournament just 3 years ago. In fact of the eight teams in the tournament Utah finished 8th out of 8th. Congrats Cougs on the #2 seed and good luck in the WCC tournament!!

It was a tougher game than one would have expected. As fun as it was to watch everybody contribute to the win, it was fantastic to see Anson Winder keep Johnny Dee from shooting threes. Winder scored, but I think more important was that he kept Dee under wraps. I'll bet Dee is going to have nightmares about Anson being in his space all game. Remember, San Diego may have be considered a lower ranked team in the league but they did beat Gonzaga. Way to go Anson and Cougs.

Flatlander...the tournament will be streamed live next week on comentary is a little humorous but at least they will show all the games live. BYU is a different team on the road but they are winning when they need to right now. Let's just hope we get in the tournament and go from there. We need something to build off of for next year which I am hoping will be a big year. But that is just from my perspective.

After bragging, than putting down BYU for not entering the PAC12. The utes are unable to win half their conference games.

This was not BYU's fault, but the resentment grows.

Fans should not cheer for their team! Period.

Two more questions for you, my good friend Chris: Out of 68 NCAA bracket projections, how many predict BYU will dance? Last one for now: How many projections predict that Utah will participate in any post season tournament? Hint: the answers are 56 and 0. I wonder if you can figure out which is which. Have a great day, my friend! LOL indeed!

  • River Coug Fort Mohave, AZ

So, Chris, you seem to like questions, so here are some for you: Which program, BYU or Utah, has more NBA draft picks in the past ten years (hint: it's 3-1)?  Ready for another? Which program, BYU or Utah, has more NCAA appearances in the past 10 years (hint: it's 7-3)? Which program, BYU or Utah, has produced more consensus NCAA players of the year in the past ten years (hint: it's 1-0)? Which program, BYU or Utah, has won 7 of 8 and 11 of 13 in the rivalry? One last question, Chris, and it's the one I'd really like you to answer (remember, I answered yours): What adjective would you use to describe a basketball program that has been so dominated by its rival over the last ten years? Have a great day, Chris! LOL indeed!

I saw some of their old selfish habits starting to creep back in, resulting in all the turnovers. Nevertheless, really good win on the road. Austin was an absolute beast in his role. His value on this team I think goes underrecognized. 10 rebounds and 5/5 from the foul line.
(Btw Carlino had 14 pts, not 12).
BYU must NOT rely on an at-large bid for the NCAA tourney. They need to go into the WCC tourney determined to win it. BYU or Gonzaga HAS to win the tournament in order for BYU to get to the Dance. Both BYU and Gonzaga could both easily be upset in tournament play, leaving BYU, not Gonzaga, on the outside looking in.

Rose is long overdue for a conference Tourney championship. This needs to be the year..

It feels good to be a Cougar fan. These young men are a class act. As newcomers in the WCC in which every single team targets BYU, it is super great to be the number two seed in the conference tournament.

Not that it matters, but I wonder where the Utes will be seeded in the Mighty PAC tournament. Any predictions, Chris B?

Chris B you may be right, not many around here know the San Diego mascot. But we do recognize if there is one team who does not know it's own mascot it's the Ute's and the mighty Wasatch Chicken.

I would prefer BYU going to the NIT and winning a few post season games again instead of a one and done at the NCAA's.

tough watching the game today; Carlino back to hot and cold. Quick success seems to get him untracked mentally and then he makes mistakes or takes poor shots.

There is some hazard, at least to one's ego, about forecasting the outcome of a sporting event before the game is played or the race has been run. That is especially true with Thoroughbred racing as a good many losing but betting customers can quickly attest. I am a Cougar fan whose loyalty and interest in BYU basketball goes back to the days when Roland Minson, Mel Hutchins, Harold Christensen, Joe Richey and Jerry Romney won the NIT. Their manner of play was ahead of the curve. That was the way the first half was today. Perhaps BYU's thoughts turned to one of San Diego's fine restaurants. The second half left my stomach churning. Thank you fellows for pulling it out in the end. Please remember, however, that such uncertainty is hard on old men. I like it better when we are ahead by 25 and the other fellows are thinking about a good restaurant. Congratulations! I'm pleased you won!

  • NevadaCoug Overton, NV
    March 1, 2014 5:30 p.m.

With the win BYU finishes the regular season with a 21-10 record for the second season in a row. Nice to see that they didn't let down and pulled out this win. Earlier in the season, losing a lead late in the 2nd half would have resulted in a loss. This team has come a way in that regard.

I'm still of a mixed opinion. Although I really would like to see BYU in the NCAA Tournament, they will likely get a seed in the 10-12 range no matter what they do from here on out. So, likely that will mean a tough match up with a team that is practically playing at home. Playing in the NIT with the chance to go deeper in a tournament, like last season, seems so much more of an intriguing option.

One other note about this team. They finished the season having lost just one game at home, and that was by 2 points to a ranked team; a game they could have won had they just hit free throws. That's what you want to see your team do: defend home court. Oh, and win a bunch of games on the road.

Great win over a tough SD team, who took down the Zags last week. BYU finishing strong and peaking at the right time, just like they did last year. I really like how Anson is playing, especially on the D side. Looking forward to Las Vegas.

Great road win Cougs - way to hang in the second half. All the more remarkable that you were able to succeed in the face of the overwhelming contrary hoops wisdom regurgitated during the second half by wimpy trolls. Some people win big games on the road, some people hang out on the comment boards of teams they hate. Some people have lives, some don't.

One of the most exciting games all year! It was anybody's game until Kyle Collinsworth hit the triple very late in the game put BYU up for good!

Chris B: Since the Utes won't have anything else to do in March, can you get them to cheer for BYU in the NCAA tourney?

  • Orem Parent Orem, UT
    March 1, 2014 4:52 p.m.

Chris, your comments always put a smile on my face. You try and try to get under BYU fans' skin but every single time you come on here and post 5 of the first 7 posts, BYU ALWAYS comes back and wins the game. It really is hilarious. LOL!

I just want to thank you for being the good luck charm for all of us BYU fans. I'm a little bit saddened because I think you must be sitting at home just hoping for a BYU loss and they keep winning. I want you to be happy. I want you to enjoy sports in Utah. Maybe next year your utes will get to go the big dance. I know it has been a long time for loyal ute fans. Maybe it will happen next year.

    At any rate,

Good job when you needed it. Cougars need some consistancy now. I still feel that they will perform best in the NIT, for they will get some home court games. Cougs still do not win on the road often, and just getting by an S.D. team like this will not take them far in the big dance. The NIT experience last year would play in well this year.

Then when they consistantly win on the road they will be ready for the big dance. One and out is no fun.

I must agree with my associate above who have alot to say about BYU. So much it like he ate bad burrito and cannot stop his mouth from spewing. BYU needs to schedule more schools like South Winnebego State JV Cheer Squad for home schedule. Then that build resume and we will get more mention on ESPN like U. But wait........when was the last time U got mentioned on ESPN? Was Bill Clinton still in oval office? I think so......

Ugly second half for sure. Nate is such a stud player. Nails from the stripe down the stretch. Second leading rebounder in WCC. I still think these officials are sub-par. Fang-tooth(SMC) can push all he wants but we are whistled for ticky-tacky contact.

Just about every bubble team won today. byu still needs to go to the conference title game to go dancing, and even then it wouldn't be a guarantee.

I know usually teams play their rivals the last game.

Are byu and San Diego new rivals? I know byu needs a new rival now that they've moved to the wcc.

Gonzaga and St. Mary's are the premier rivalry in that league, maybe byu and san diego are new rivals?

What do you byu fans think?
