For those if you who whined about bringing up Utah in our posts... The only reason we did this was because of all the trash talking they did on the articles leading up to this game. If you noticed what we said it was all in good fun, at least what I said in my post in the beginning of this article. Everyone needs to lighten up.

Congratulations to the Cougars on a great win. I hope you make it to the dance. No chance for my Ags to make it, but I can root for the Cougars against anyone else. Coach Rose did a fine job. Again congratulations and best of luck in making the tournament.

It's funny how Utah is being brought up so much on this board. I know Chris B. makes a lot of questionable comments, but now the same types of comments are being made. Celebrate your win without mentioning Utah and the things you dislike. I'm still a Ute fan, even though they dropped a close one to Arizona. I'll still cheer for them next game, without dragging BYU into the conversation. That was a good win against a classy coach(Few) and a great program. I think the 'Zags will be ok. Interesting that a fan(son of a friend) wearing a Gonzaga shirt, isn't allowed to sit with his friend in the BYU section. I've never heard of this ever. Threatened to be kicked out? Had to wear a jacket over it. He hadn't said a thing. Seriously? So you can't cheer for any other team? Anyone know why? Just wondering.what do you think would happen if a person wearing a byu shirt was to sit in the student section of the U do you think that person would be allowed to sit there NOT

well noose if you are the expert about utah sports as you say then you would know that Utah has only beaten BYU 3 times over the last 15 games and have not won in Provo since 2005 besides this article haws nothing to do with utah it is a byu thread,if you like to talk mack go to the utes thread and talk smack all u u want but this is not the thread to do it on.

Nope, Christine, true story. His friend goes to BYU, this kid has liked Gonzaga for a long time, and went down for the game. His friend must have got the ticket for him, but he was told he couldn't have that shirt on. Every game I watch on TV will show people sitting with the home team fans, and they're wearing opponent colors and gear. Not a big deal, just wondering why it happened. Thanks Alex T. for the response. Go Utes! Go Aggies! Go Wildcats!

    Congrats to BYU!

I'm a Ute - always have been since my dad started taking me to games nearly 50 years ago...

I still don't understand all the animosity between parties when we are NOT playing one another. We should like the other team to go undefeated in all sports, except when they play our team - whether you are a BYU fan or a Utah fan. That way the win means that much more - don't you think? Save all the hate and get real!

Again, Congratulations to BYU for a great win!

I wonder if someone went back and researched Collinsworth's record with free throws when he was in high school and winning the state championship, if he was as bad then as he is now. It doesn't pay for him to shoot around the basket because if he gets fouled, he's not going to make them. And if he takes outside shots, he's not much better. He has to make his shots so he get at least an "and one", not two. He's good enough at the point and rebounding. Is he worse at the line right now then he was earlier in the season? Some good research for somebody to do. Maybe he's just too green from a mission return. But it's not only him at the line, but a lot of others suck too. That's not BYU's tradition. Loved Winder's confidence and ability at the line against Gonzaga. There are a lot of games I think we would have won with better free throw shooting...and who is that on? Keep it up Cougs! Great win!

Thanks for first hand information Alex T. Kinda shoots that made up theory of "son of a friend" out of the water. If a valid ticket holding "student" is sitting in the home team's "student section" wearing the opposing team's advertisements they deserve to be uncomfortable in the first place. That would be like a Utah student sitting in the muss wearing BYU gear. Tell me that wouldn't go over like a lead balloon.

Any other rightfully purchased seat outside of the student section, wear whoever's gear you want.

I think the "son of a friend" story is made up.

Agreed about the Utah bashing. Personally, I'm tired of it. But this is a serious rivalry, and we're still seeing 54-10 and 4 in a row from Ute fans.

For me, I don't care what Utah does; I only care what BYU does, and I was happy to see such a great game last night.

Hope the kids learned something about perimeter defense that will serve them well in the next game.

    William Wallace.

I am a student at BYU and was in the student section last night. I was right next to a Zags fan who was cheering the entire game decked out in his gear?? No one asked him to leave? So I'm unsure where you're getting this information. Maybe it was a bit exaggerated...because I can definitely see a "select" few students who would have been runnning their mouth at him the entire game.

Security also checks for student passes every time you come in and out of your seat. So if this "son of a friend" is a student and had a student pass...he shouldn't have had any problems.

Good one Moose. "world beaters"? No, just Gonzaga beaters, and only last night. So I guess where you come from UNC is better than Duke because they beat them last night, even though they're unranked and Duke is top 5?

Someone with that mentality would think Utah football was better than Stanford football because of one game.

    Interesting world you come from!

I'd dare wager that BYU would fare just fine in a rematch with the Utes either in the Marriott Center or on a neutral court.

BYU has proven several times in the last 13 games who is the better team. You might remember that they won 11 of those 13. I don't think thaqt BYU fans are feeling any sorrow for beating u 11 of the last 13 but nice try.

Why bash the Utes? They have an excellent team and beat us (BYU) soundly. Man up and give credit where credit is due. OK to enjoy the victory, but no need to demean other worthy opponents. If SOME Ute fans don't reciprocate, that is not our problem.

I am a Ute fan but follow all in-state schools. I wish BYU wouldn't start acting like world beaters after one game. Most of the posts are the same, the game where BYU lost to Utah means nothing and the rankings mean everything. Well I'm sorry. Where I come from, you talk on the court. If you are so sure you can beat Utah again, then you should all be hoping that somehow they get matched up again. But I think you will find, just like in football, another chance will only bring sorrow.

oh please…who is the best team in the State in basketball can be determined by the power index calculations…this is no question. Any team can have a good game or a bad game on a given night. But all this is built into the equation on these ranking systems. There is no tournament selection guru and no evaluation of any kind that has Utah playing as hard of a schedule or ranked as highly as the Cougs or any chance of being a bubble team. There is no question. And, with Utah State and Weber possibly going to the NCAA and now BYU likely to make it too….only one loser not in the discussion. Maybe Utah can just accenpt it's role as spoiler and never competitor in any sport. Cash the checks from the PAC12 and be quiet.

From our funniest red goggled apologist yesterday: "I'll take a 90% free throw shooter who misses 4 in a row in a big game than a guy who...shoots 65% all day long!"

Even though I know she was talking about Collinsworth I'm guessing she might want to revise that statement after 65% Winder goes 10 for 10 from the line and hits every clutch free throw necessary to preserve the win when it mattered most.

I don't like it that so many people are mentioning Utah either; but for those who question why some of us believe BYU is the best team in the state, here's some logic.

Yes, Utah beat BYU. However, that was during a stretch in December-early January when BYU was not playing well. It was also on Utah's home floor. Utah is MUCH better at home than on the road. Most teams are, but for Utah the differences are pretty extreme. I believe, and I'm sure many will agree, that if the game had been played on a neutral floor, BYU would win. Add in the fact that BYU has better RPI and played a much tougher out of conference schedule? In which they beat a few good teams on the road and played tough with others, including the only undefeated remaining in the nation? Yes, I believe BYU is the better team. And, no, the better team doesn't always win (see BYU @ Utah).

I believe Gonzaga is a better team than BYU. But last night BYU had the home floor advantage and won. Thank you Winder for hitting some free throws!

Utah was fortunate to catch BYU in the HC on a night that Loveridge couldn't miss in the 1st half; the way that Jordan has been playing lately, the Utes would get destroyed in a return visit to the Marriott Center where Utah hasn't beaten BYU since 2005.

Let's not forget that the Utes couldn't even beat #181 WSU on the road.

I'm guessing more than a few of our crimson friends wish Winder played for the Utes because he can hit free throws in the clutch with the game on the line.

I wish people would quit bringing Utah into this thread. It was a great win but BYU has done nothing to prove they are the best basketball team in the state, especially after they lost decisively to the Utes earlier in the year. BYU has a better shot at the tournament than Utah at going to he tournament by virtue of being in the second best team in the WCC.
So please, as a BYU fan I implore you (and you know who I am talking about) to quit touting the cougars as better than Utah this year because your argument is desparate and weak.

Finally--someone (Winder) goes to the line and knocks down free throws. I think Rose's keeping Mika on the bench to start the game was less about "defense" and more about letting the refs get those first couple of foul calls out of their system. Whether BYU wins or loses, the WCC has the most inconsistent reffing I've ever seen, not from one game to the next but from one ~possession~ to the next.

Dave Rose was a genius last night. Putting in other players in the beginning of the game to concentrate on defense was a brilliant move. We were able to totally shut down their 3 point shooting and drives to the basket. Alternating big men underneath and the timing of this was awesome. Way to out coach and out strategies the zags! Nice game Cougars. Winder was great!

Wow @Crow, your post was hyperbole at its best, and obsessive spin at its worst. To claim that Utah's affiliation with the PAC is the only thing that brings "real basketball.." to the state is just over-the-top nonsense. It is amusing to see a large segment of the ute fan base so enamored with their conference, and bragging on it, whilst being intentionally oblivious to the fact that their own program does little or nothing to bolster that supposed "prestigious" PAC12 reputation.

The WCC does have good basketball programs. Since they don't have football and various other sports they can focus money and resources more on basketball. The result is a better product than you would be willing to acknowledge.

So spin it all you want. The fact is U are jealous, and obsessed; and it is hilarious.

  • Objectified Tooele, UT
    Feb. 21, 2014 8:45 a.m.

    @ Crow:

There were actually 2 top-25 teams that came into the state this week. It's Ok for you to give a little more credit to Arizona and not get so down on them. Just because they let Utah take them into OT, they are still pretty much considered a ranked team.

So now that BYU beat the best of WCC, does that make them no good in your mind? Does that also mean to you that the Big 12 is no good since BYU also beat them?

As a reminder to those so obviously blinded by red glasses, BYU also beat Stanford (a team universally considered better than Utah) at Stanford. Per your reasoning, that must mean the PAC12 is also over-ranked and over-rated.

Thanks for starting my day with a good laugh. A little less bias would allow you to receive a bit more credibility. Unfortunately, you lost some with that latest comment.

Better college basketball has not been seen in the state of Utah this season than what we witnessed in Provo last night. Too bad you and ekute weren't actually able to see that game.

Good to see the coaches do what several have suggested in the last few weeks. Start Winder. Get more even scoring. Take out Collinsworth in the last 2 minutes of the game so he won't miss free throws.

Being at the game I did notice that they could have done a few more simple give and go plays with Haws. They were there while the triple screen stuff wasn't. There were at least three times Haws was wide open right after he passed off and the guards didn't get it back to him.
