The state of BYU basketball must be better than I thought when multiple hard core Ute fans come on BYU articles and proclaim that BYU should beat a top 25 ranked team by double digits. Did I miss something?

BYU should beat Gonzaga by double digits today. It's tough to play at the MC and Gonzaga is not as good this year (@Portland L 82-73, @SCU W 54-52)

    Good luck!

I'm happy to concede that Gonzaga is not as good as they have been in years past but maintain that that doesn't mean they are "average." I'll agree with the poll voters (who know a thing or two about college basketball) that the zags are worthy of their top 25 ranking, which, I will remind you would place them at #2 or #3 in the PAC12. That doesn't seem "average" to me. And Spokane Ute, how is calling them "average and vulnerable" constructive? That post certainly seems to make Gonzaga out to be worse than they are, which would make a potential BYU win mean less. Certainly looks like a trolling strategy to me.

I'm looking forward to the game. Isn't it the first game BYU has played against a ranked opponent at home this season? Go Cougs!

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see BYU's defense stiffling the Bulldogs. By the way, Spokane Ute and Sports Are Great - you guys remind me of the family that fights in front of other people in the restaurant. Akward.

I don't normally agree with a lot of Ute fans on here, but I do have to agree with Spokane Ute that Gonzaga is not as good as they have been in the past. This year they squeaked out some close WCC road wins and barely beat a bad San Diego team at home. BYU's only home loss has been to Iowa St. and that was by 2 points. Gonzaga does have some great shooters but when they play away from home they have struggled. This is a game that BYU has a great chance of winning and it will give them another quality win besides Texas and Stanford to put on their resume. I will be cheering for the Cougs to pull out a victory.

@Spokane Ute. I thought your comments were great. I agree with you that this Gonzaga teams seems below average FOR THEM. But they're still a handful for WCC teams, which is more than we can say about BYU.

Gonzaga would be a power in the PAC12. The Huskies won't play them, I hear.

I have a lot of respect for Gonzaga.

I do agree that BYU should beat them tonight in Provo. But not in the tournament, alas.

I haven't followed Gonzaga for many years like Spokane Ute, but I have thought that they weren't the same old powerful Zags this year that they have been in years past. Not only have they not beaten any top teams, but they have had several close wins that in past years would have been blowouts. I think the Cougars can beat them tonight. I will be there losing my voice. Go Cougs!

I certainly hope you are labeling me as a "self rightous hypocrite"? Utah and BYU fans can say what ever they want; I don't control the forum. The pointed, degrading comments (from both sides) grow old and tiresome (IMO). My comment and position is from watching both BYU and Gonzaga play numerous times this year. Last night was painful; but I'm very happy with this years Utah team. Not a single senior on the roster and probably NIT bound. I can live with that. I will be more suprised if BYU loses, than if they win; especially playing at home. I will also be the first to congradulate them if they do. Look forward to the game. Later Guy!

So if I make a constructive comment regarding a Gonzaga team that I follow, and have followed, very closely I'm trolling? If I make a statement or opinion regarding a BYU prorgram that I've followed since the Fred Robert's day's, I'm trolling? Really? My statement regarding Gonzaga being average is they just don't have the talent that they have had in past years. The usually have a number of big road wins against the power conferences and are ranked securely in the top 20 (#1 last year); as opposed to a fringe top 25 team. They have lost nuetral site games to Dayton, Kansas State and on the road at Memphis. Obviously vulnereable as they are tonight. Notice Memphis (#24) is the only current top 25 team on their schedule. Gonzaga doesn't have a single win against a top 25 team. I would say that justifies them being average, or I would say below average, by Gonzaga standards. Gonzaga hasn't made it past the sweet 16 in what; 8 years? Unfortunately. I hope I'm wrong but this team won't get out of the 2nd round of the tourney.

It really is funny that so many claim that BYU has to win the WCC Tournament to get in.

No, they don't. Yes, of course getting the automatic bid would be the best, since it would obviously guarantee them a spot. However, even after going 1-1 last week with a loss to Pacific on the road, Lunardi of ESPN has BYU back in his list of predicted Tournament teams. Yes, they are basically the last team in and it's not a good position to be in. However, even if BYU loses to Gonzaga tonight they still have a shot at an at large bid. Just win out, then make it to the semifinals and/or finals of the WCC tournament. I would say they could drop a conference tournament game to either St. Mary's or Gonzaga and not have it hurt them too much.

Of course, a win against Gonzaga tonight would be a huge step in solidifying their Tournament resume.

Tonight's game will highlight what is good about college b.ball: sold out arena, excited fans, and good quality play.

Regardless of the outcome, BYU still has to win the WCC tourney to go dancing.

Spokane - I forget, its ok for Ute "fans" to say something but not ok for byu fans to say the same thing, and that doesn't make Ute "fans" hypocrites. Thanks for the reminder. Not sensitive at all, just not afraid to call our self righteous hypocrites.

Hopefully byu doesn't find a way to blow the game 6 different times like Utah did last night, but wouldn't put it past them.

    Re: Spokane Ute

I don't think Sports Are Great was "generalizing" at all. He was simply acknowledging the trolls on both sides troll, which is what you are doing right now.

Evidence of trolling? Making statements that diminish the success of another team before or after that success is reached (i.e. "This Gonzaga team is very vulnerable and average"). Do you really believe the Zags are "average"? They rank higher than all but one (or two depending on the poll) team in the PAC12. One could logically deduce therefore that the PAC12 is well below average. This phenomenon (making ridiculous claims with no evidence to back it up) is called logical fallacy and it is something that trolls excel at.

I would love to hear some actual evidence for why the Zags are so vulnerable and average. Thanks in advance.

No hypocrisy here; just an honest sports fan. Drop the sensitivity.....sheesh.

It's too early to say whether BYU does or does not deserve a bid. If they win out the rest of the way, then lose in the WCC Championship; they will get a bid; regardless or our opinions. A loss tonight would be very damaging.

    Have a good day.

Winder and Bartley need to be subbed in earlier in the game - both those guys can have an immediate impact on both sides of the ball. Someone tell Mika to keep the ball off of the floor.

@Spokane, and yet didn't I say the same thing you said, just replacing Utah "fans" instead of byu fans? So it wasn't generalizing and putting all byu fans in one group when you said it but it was for Utah fans when I said it?

Like I said, pot, meet kettle. Drop the hypocrisy.

As for the game, byu in my opinion doesn't deserve an NCAA bid this year. A win over Gonzaga would be nice and a little unexpected, but even with a win this BYU team doesn't deserve to be in the big dance. Too many losses to bad teams(and no, I'm not including Utah. I think Utah is a good team)

Nice job of generalizing and putting all Utah fans in one group. Nice, but far from accurate.

Looking forward to the game; super-duper match up!

I think BYU wins this; Gonzaga struggles against good teams on the rosd! We shall see!

BYU will have to play a complete game, defend the 3, yes, but also defend inside, and work to run when they can. Rebounding will be key, as well as playing smart, not wasting possessions foolishly.

They must match Zags fast start, (Zags like to play from in front), basket for basket. Gonzaga's first task is always to take the lead, play from the lead...take that away and they'll be frustrated. It is a win-able game, its up to the players, if they give it not just their best, but their very best thus far. Go Cougars!

It's very difficult to want BYU to win any games, especially when so many of there so called fans flood the Utah threads after every lose. Never when they win though. Now that's curious?

Pot, meet kettle. Ute "fans" do it better than any.

Oh well, here's to a good game and I will be pulling for Gonzaga simply because they are my home town team. This Gonzaga team is very vulnerable and average. I would not be the least bit suprised to see them lose to BYU.

BYU is not in. Not enough good wins. Must beat Gonzaga and not lose anymore conference games. If they win tonight and not lose until at least the final, that is their best chance. Gonzaga is less than stellar on the road in conference play. They are extremely beatable. If they find their offense, BYU can easily outscore these guys.
