Once upon a time, three or four years ago, divisionals did exist in 4A. The officials representing Region 8 decided that they didn't want them any more, so they voted against them. This resulted in Maple Mountain qualifying over twenty wrestlers for state last year. Now that Wasatch is in Region 8 it has made that region more competitive much like Region 5 with Mountain Crest and Box Elder. It will be interesting if the Region 8 officials "see the light" and vote for divisionals to return. Congrats to the Mountain Crest wrestlers! Maybe not the flashiest but definitely the best TEAM in 4A wrestling this year.

MMHS had more "individual" champions, but MCHS had more wrestlers place and earn their team more points, and that is why they won the "team" championship. If a high school had every kid take second or third place compared to a school with one champion and no one else place, they should win just because they have one more champion? That doesn't sound ethical to winning the state 4A team title, the rest of the team at MCHS was able to do their job, only the superstars at MMHS could get it done.
Couldn't have said it better myself. If divisionals were used, MCHS wouldn't have qualified and placed so many more wrestlers than MMHS, and it would have been really close and MMHS would have won, but that's not the case. I would totally agree with a divisional system to even the competition so we would qualify the best 16 only to state.

The scoring system of the actual tournament is fine but there are two other important factors.

At 145 pounds Mountain Crest got a big win against a Maple Mountain wrestler in the quarterfinals. The win wasn't as big as the fact that the Maple Mountain wrestler, ranked third in state, was injured and did not win another match in the finals.

The other story is a lack of a divisional qualifier. Region 5 and Region 8 are the best regions in wrestling but Region 8 proved to be significantly stronger this year. This allowed Mountain Crest to bring more wrestlers to the state tournament. They brought 19 and Maple Mountain 13. With a divisional the gap would have been much closer in reality and perhaps tipped things toward the Maple Mountain.

With that said, injuries do happen and credit must be given to Mountain Crest. 13 of their 19 qualifiers placed in the top six and every wrestler there won at least one match. Very impressive performance.

The 4A needs to fix it the divisional system and then there would be no controversy about the team race.

What a bad scoring system. A team with 6 state champions is not the states best team?
