Lets face it the NIT would be a lot better at this point with Collingsworth out. There is very little chance BYU can even win and opening round game if they are seeded 12 like ESPN has them. They might be able to win a opening round game in the play in game on Tuesday, but if it is Dayton in Dayton like is expected, don't count on that either.
Utah must at least beat Arizona to be a NCAA at large consideration. I think they are in the NIT.

    @ Big Sky Fan

Sagarin has Utah ranked 56. Weber ranked 168. You guys would have fit into the powder puff schedule just fine.

I find myself going back and forth on whether being one and done in the NCAA is better than a deep run in the NIT. I really enjoyed the great NIT home games I attended last year but can also see the recruiting and confidence boost of getting to the NCAA. For the team's sake, I suppose the NCAA is better no matter how many games you get but for selfish reasons, I enjoy the NIT games. Of course, playing a few rounds in the NCAA would be much better than either of these two choices. Go Coug's!

Sometimes I get wound up by the detractors under Utah articles and find myself coming to a byu article just to take a shot at them. Then I feel stupid. I requested that the DN remove my comment. I respect Dave Rose and wish him well. I think that to barely qualifying for the NCAA's is more prestigious than making a deep run in the NIT.

"It's kind of like "We're great cause we beat 6 patsies and got stomped in a lower tier bowl."

Or, it's kind of like, we're great 'cause we beat a bunch of patsies without leaving the state of Utah during our pre-conference slate. Careful with all that glass house stuff.

Why must people belittle a team because they have a chance of getting into the Tournament? Why can't you all just cheer for your team without tearing down another? BYU has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament. Sorry if that offends you. Get over it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind them going to the NIT again. I'd rather see them have a chance at a deep run in the NIT like last year than be done in one weekend in the NCAA Tourny.

    Hey down under,

That was my point, that Utah has a snowballs chance to get into the dance. Thanks for your response!

"I would say 60% sounds right for where BYU is right now."

Much better than the .06% chance Utah has of winning the PAC 12 tourney, which is the ONLY chance the Utes have of making the NCAA tourney.

I'm with idablu on this one. Possible and probable are two very different things. I can see us losing at St. Mary's and have a decent chance at GU at home but could easily lose. While I'm hopeful, I also realize we'll probably be in the NIT again. It's not really such a bad thing with the home court format. Still going to cheer for the Coug's!

Currently the BPI has the Utes as the 37th team in the nation and likely to get in. Lots of games left to play and the Coug's and Wildcats have a solid chance as well.

    Sun devil,
Anyone that follows college basketball can finish the story. Utah's chance are less than 3% that they will make any tourney. Let's not forget that they must hit the road and we all know how that turns out. I could not find a single team in all of div 1 that has a worse road record that utah in the last three years. Maybe I should go to div 2 to see.

I love my Cougs but you'll have to forgive me if I don't hold my breath on this one. This is the same false hype that BYU got toward the end of last season. Assuming they have at least one more road loss and a home loss to Gonzaga (sorry, Mark Few is simply a better coach) I think BYU's only chance of getting into the NCAA's is to win the WCC tournament. BYU's track record shows that is extremely unlikely. I hope I'm wrong but I call it like I see it.

    Chris B,
If only Utah had played WSU in the pre season it would have improved your RPI and SOS even if you would have lost!!!! Banging on a team and school that has about a 90% better chance of making the Big Dance and has a much better overall record and can win on the road is truly funny!!!

Well Chris, you are half right. If BYU does not make the NCAA they will be in the NIT. Utah WILL NOT make either with their PACTHETHCS schedule.

And Utah's chances of making the dance are...

Did you forget Weber State, they probably have the best chance of going. Looks like they will host the Big Sky tournament which gives them a great chance to win it and go dancing, something the utes have been dreaming of for years.

By the way why was Utah so scared to schedule weber state this year? Didn't fit into their plans of a powder puff schedule.

I'll take Randy Rahe any day over Krystowiak.

I would say 60% sounds right for where byu is right now.

But right now doesn't have losses to Gonzaga and at Mary's at least once each in the remaining weeks including the tournament included.

No Utah team is going to the big dance.

Utah and byu are both in the nit.
