My father was the managing editor of the Deseret News and worked with West and Chaffin to begin the Sterling Scholar program. I always thought it was great. I kind of hoped my kids might enter, but was disappointed. I love that it honors those in areas that are sometimes not recognized.

Kudos to Keith West and all those who worked so hard to establish this great Utah tradition! Its rigorous standards make it an honor that really means something, both to the kids and the community.

Thanks to those who implemented this program and have kept it going! I remember setting my sights on becoming a Sterling Scholar, working hard to achieve the honor, and then being so pleased to have earned it. Those I chose to room with in college were fellow classmates I first met through the Sterling Scholar program at our high school. In a society obsessed with athletics, I appreciate the recognition the Sterling Scholar program affords those who excel academically.
