This teams cares more about the offensive stat sheet than winning. Sorry - but that's what it looks like.

Has our coaching staff ever heard of a box zone and one? Better chance of stopping Pangos than the defenses we used. When man to man was played, he was not as effective.

They were too tired. They weren't focused. They weren't ready to play defense in the second half. The other guys just got hot..again. Everyone always gets up for BYU. What chance can they have among all these intimidating mitigating factors??

The performance of this team shows lack of focus, lack of cohesiveness, immaturity and poor preparation. Every loss is accompanied by a new plethora of excuses as to the unavoidability of their poor execution. This team is sorely lacking in adequate mental focus to properly cover even all the fundamentals of basketball in any one game. That sounds ridiculous, but appears with regularity to be the case.

WWookie...good point! The prospect of playing D-1 basketball before high school size crowds is not exactly motivating to a prized recruit.

Tom Holmoe has a maelstrom at BYU that has the two major revenue sports swirling down the funnel, and needs to reverse this trend of failure or watch it consume what should be one of the best sports programs in the nation.

Since the mid-90's Gonzaga has found its way to the NCAA tournament pretty regularly, but they're not a serious contender once they step on the big stage.

Not Ute "fans". Just one guy, who isn't even a Ute fan. He's just a BYU hater, and none of the rest of us endorse him....

I absolutely hate the hypocrisy that goes back and forth between these two schools - as if one side is right and one is wrong. I'll admit that I have "participated" in the past, but if either side thinks they are going to convince the other to jump ship they are sorely mistaken. Bottom line is that the spoils go to the victor and Utah has shown ON THE PLAYING FIELD that they are better in both football and basketball this year. Kind of hard to argue when the scoreboard says otherwise.

Here's wishing the Cougs continued success in volleyball,a whole lot of needed-luck the remainder of the basketball season, and much success to Coach Littlewood and his baseball team as the season is just a few short weeks from kicking off!

    Go Cougars!

Ah yes. The good ol' "we lost but we're still better people than you" tactic. I really don't see what Sunday play and religion have anything to do with being blown out in a basketball game.

Gonzaga plays as a team. When you get 21 assists that shows you, you are a team. BYU plays like it is pick-up at the Y. Poor defense but not as bad as the offense. All they do is look to shoot it and it doesn't matter who has the ball. Shoot it as quick as you can and it doesn't who's open, just put it up from anywhere on the floor at anytime.

"BYU fans have class, they don't have to run down other programs . . ." -- DRay

Some do, some don't. For example:

BYU apologizes to USU for ill-advised Jumbotron message

"Following BYU's 78-72 win Wednesday night over the Aggies, the arena's Jumbotron flashed a quick message that read: "Dear UT St. Enjoy The LOSS! (heart) Your Big Brother BYU. Once video and photos of the Jumbotron message hit the web on Thursday, Aggie fans expressed dismay at the lack of sportsmanship through various social networking sites and message boards."

Regarding the brilliant comment by rhappahannock that "we really miss Bronson making some hard fouls in the middle and we need someone to foul hard outside." Huh?! Mika and Austin both play lousy defense and foul out on a regular basis... but you want "quality" along with quantity as the other team continues to line up at the charity stripe for their free throw fiesta. It's called d-e-f-e-n-s-e. Wow, just wow...

The WCC doesn't seem to hold Gonzaga back when it comes to recruiting or having success. They're in line for their 16th straight NCAA appearance. In that span, they've been to an elite 8 and multiple sweet 16's. I think too much is made here about the size of the arenas these games are played in, and not enough about the teams playing the games. This is a solid mid major conference that often gets multiple tournament bids. Some people on here make it sound like it is below the Big Sky or SWAC. BYU can have success, they just don't seem to have things going their way this year

Evidently you aren't familiar with a good number of y "fans" who don't subscribe to your pronouncement. Reading just about any Utah story should open your eyes.

They definitely miss Kaufusi, this team has nothing under the basket on offense or defense.

Only a byu fan would say "other things are more important" after loosing. Family, faith, building character and sportsmanship are not unique to byu and/or the wcc.

The byu fans are learning that rpi's and sagarins are meaningless if you can't win on the...scoreboard!

Ok - now its utahs turn to go to the slaughter. should be a good one.

Like how BYU got slaughtered by Utah? That was a good one.

I watched a little of the San Diego vs Gonzaga game and thought BYU had a great chance for an upset. San Diego had chance to win, BYU had no chance. The difference, BYU doesn't play defense.

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Jan. 26, 2014 10:38 a.m.

@prodicus Utah is a better team then byu and it is not even close in comparison. Utah actually beat a top 25 team this year where byu has fallen short. If Utah can get their road woes figured out they will be a very competitive team in the PAC a far better conference then the wcc.

@hobbes you should come over to the Utah articles after a loss and you can witness first hand how classy byu fans really are. Which is comical since Utah is playing in a tougher conference with far better athletes then the wcc.

DRay, that's quite the turnaround from your December rhetoric:

"Coaching basketball is what these two men do as a career, and they get paid handsomely to do it, I hope it means something more than a shrug to them, whether their teams play well or not. If its just a shrug and an oh well, kind of thing, they ought to find another job, one that really doesn't matter at all, so we can have two who seek excellence in what they do, and teach that to their team...John Wooden must be turning over in his grave to see such don't give a care keep it all in perspective kind of attitudes as portrayed in this article."

Actually, I thought the Cougars gave a strong showing against Gonzaga. The Cougars were tired, no matter what anybody says, and Gonzaga is deep. The Cougars kept it close, but couldn't keep up.

The goal now is to win out in the conference and take momentum into the tournament.

You are making no sense at all. These WCC teams still manage to recruit some very good talent to play in their junior high gyms. BYU has recruited an amazing class coming in for 2014. BTW, your utes are the ones who opened the window and bolted for the pac. BYU was victim of an intolerable TV deal in the MWC so took the opportunity to leave as well. Further, don't think for a minute that your Utes would be hot stuff in the WCC. So give it a rest until you can back it up with a smokin' hot program.

  • DRay Roy, UT
    Jan. 26, 2014 9:37 a.m.

Again I would comment that winning is not the only important element in Sports. I love the values BYU is seeking to live by as they compete and develop the whole person. BYU basketball is exciting to watch, the team shows excellence and skill in their effort, these are things to applaud and support. The WCC is filled with Universities that put faith in God at the top of their list of priorities, making it a great Conference to be affiliated with, even though the represent different Christian Churches. At the end of the day these athletes will lead out in society after their playing days are over, and America needs them.

I wouldn't pay that much attention to the polls. Gonzaga is a very good team. Like the Cougars, they've been slowed by injuries, but they are simply a better team than BYU. They'll probably win in Provo, too--no matter where they are in the polls or the Cougars are in the RPI.

Rough loss. Good to see BYU's most ardent fan on here early and often. Neat-o to have enough accounts to be able to "like" each of his own posts 10+ times before anyone else can even comment.

Last night's game was what it was expected to be--a road loss to a good (but not great) team. BYU has the talent to win big games they just haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Last I checked the mighty PAC12 has the #1 ranked team in the nation and then every other team in the PAC is behind Gonzaga on votes to get into the rankings. What does that say about the rest of the PAC if Gonzaga is a nobody?

  • hobbes1012003 Kaysville, UT

BYU looked gassed from the start. The officials let them play hard the whole game and BYU just wasnt ready for that physical of a game. they looked out of sync from the first whistle. I hope they can win out the rest of the season. thats our only shot at a post season bid, and thats a stretch. and what is not surprising is that all four first comments on this board are Ute fans rubbing it in. I guess that is what they consider class.

    lets get it together Cougs!

Hey look, the big 12 people are all uppity because they have ONE team ranked in both polls (Arizona), while none of their other teams are ranked at all. Don't worry guys, Gonzaga will be ranked in all the polls next week, and then the WCC, MWC (SDSU), and PAC-12 will all be equal by your bogus silly metric.

Gonzaga is consistently a quality team. BYU has lost to some terrible teams it was embarrassing to lose to, like Utah, but Gonzaga is not one of them.

"Chris B." I'm a big Ute fan, but I'm tiring of your constant negative posts regarding BYU. I don't root for them either, but I do recognize when to not say anything. I just want to root for the Utes. Give us all a break. Just worry about the Utes, who are fun to watch this year. Love the players they're getting, and love how they play.

  • DRay Roy, UT

Chris B.: BYU fans have class, they don't have to run down other programs to make theirs look good; I'll take a team that honors the Sabbath Day over any other. There is more to winning in sports than just the score.

Proud of the BYU Cougars for playing hard. Gonzaga has been missing a key player who was back with the team tonight and he makes them a better team than their record might show. I'm looking forward to the rematch in Provo, and not giving up on this BYU team, they have great effort and heart. Go Cougars!

This is an honest opinion coming from a life long Ute...

BYU should have stayed in the Mountain West. The WCC is going to really hurt BYU basketball. I don't see how the Y will be able to recruit elite athletes playing in this league. I think the school needs to start paying a little more attention to the basketball program. Seems like it is being forgotten...

  • cush81 Fairfax, VA
    Jan. 25, 2014 10:29 p.m.

Don't understand why people are ripping the WCC here when BYU is 4th in the conference right now, never finished higher than 3rd since joining the league, and only has 1 win as a WCC member against Gonzaga and St. Mary's. Seems like the criticism should be aimed at your team. Yes, you have a great home court advantage, but you have to win on the road. BYU has 4 road losses already and still have to go to Moraga.

Gee, it's always nice to hear from the Ute trolls first.

ANYWAY, as a cougar fan this WAS an embarrassing loss. After a decent first half, BYU let them run away with 3 after 3 after 3...etc. You'd think we would have learned from Sharp and the Portland loss...I guess not. Conversely, our 3 point shooting was atrocious.

  • rhappahannock Washington, DC
    Jan. 25, 2014 10:21 p.m.

BYU played decent, but Gonzaga caught fire. They were perfect from the FT line. We need to press much more. We really miss Bronson making some hard fouls in the middle, and we need someone to foul hard outside. Zone doesn't work with great shooters.

But, we still have more Pac 10 road wins than Utah, we still have an exciting team, and we still root for a school that means something.

  • Big 12 Call Yet? Ogden, UT
    Jan. 25, 2014 9:49 p.m.

Byu just isn't a good team. Simple as that. No surprise in this game. Played out exactly as we knew it would. 1-5 against Gonzaga since joining the wcc. It clear the wcc is Gonzaga and no one else.

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 25, 2014 8:37 p.m.

Well that didn't take long for Gonzaga to take control.

I would have thought a byu team with an amazing rpi like we always hear about could have given a team like Gonzaga that isn't even ranked in all polls a good game. Apparently not

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 25, 2014 8:11 p.m.

    Powerhouse Gonzaga?

Sure, they are the best team in the wcc. But they aren't even ranked in all polls. When the best team by far isn't even ranked in all polls, says a lot about the "quality" of the conference.

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 25, 2014 8:08 p.m.

With byu's amazing rpi shouldn't byu have a pretty good chance to win this game? Certainly they should keep it very very close right? Gonzaga, the best team by far in the west cupcake conference, isn't even ranked in all polls.

    Gonzaga 83
    Byu 68
