"Were we to look into our own hearts, and seek diligently to do all the good in our power … what is there to prevent us from being happy?" I love Brigham Young! I need to remember this great advice!

We do need to change our hearts until they are right before God, because:

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked..."

    (Jeremiah 17: 9)

So we do need "a change of heart" many times. When our heart is pure we can safely follow it.

Don't forget the mind too: "I will tell you in your mind and heart" (Doctrine and Covenants 8:2)

"Come now, let us reason together, saith the Lord..." (Isaiah 1:18)

"Truth is Reason" wrote Eliza R Snow.. Scipture? No, but we put it in our hymn book
    (O My Father).

Which is best? heart or head? Both are needed, both often need to change: to have a "change of heart", to "change our mind", as we regularly say. Both are important until we cease to be corrupt in our hearts and minds.

On the subject of resolutions generally: so much is said that is discouraging. I have made and kept many resolutions. Some I didn't keep perfectly but you can "try, try and try again\: you'll succeed at last. It's all good, very good.
