As a supporter of the Washington Redskins since a young age, I would disagree with anyone who wants to step in and change the name. The President needs to keep his comments to himself on something that is none of his business. but the he is really good at sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.

the only way I would get behind a name change is when EVERY American Indian agrees that it is a racial slur to keep the name, but they can't do that because a large portion of them do not see it as a slur. it did not start out to be a slur, IIRC it was American Indians that picked the name. and American Indians have been just as supportive as Non-Indians.

Frankly I think in this overly politically correct society that the liberal have built it is good to have a hold out or two and good for Snyder to being one. Differing opinions can co-exist and this is one area that perhaps should agree to disagree and move on.

    Let's see pick a new name ....

    the Washington Socialists

    the Washington Thugs

    the Washington Football team

    the Washington Persons

    the Washington Lawyers

    or ....

I don't know. Trying to pick a name that doesn't offend anyone and is politically correct in every way is impossible.

Maybe just let the team fold and forget about it. Who cares about Washington DC anyway.

Good point and idea. Maybe the Washington Treehuggers. Or the Non-Violent Ones. Or the Peaceful Players. Or the Sensitive Ones. Or the Multiculturalists. Or the Inclusives.
I know if I were the owner of the team, I'd threaten to name it something like that just to get the goat of about half of Washington D.C. And change the team colors to pastel green and pink.

If they do change it, it should be something that is a slap to the face of the PC crowd.
They're dividing America more than they are uniting it.

Well, if Rob Ford supports keeping the name, then we must! We should heed the opinion of a man of such high integrity and tact.

I'm Native American and I see no problem with the Redskin name. As far as I know, no other group of people is represented as team mascots except for the Fighting Irish. It sure is better than watching Indiams get shot down in John Wayne movies.

I do wonder. What if the Washington Redskins kept the name, but changed the mascot? Boston has the Red Sox. Cincinnati has the Reds, which was actually begun as the Redlegs, meaning the color of sox they wore. Suppose the Redskins got rid of the Indian (sorry!! native American) symbol and just called themselves the Redskins, referring to the color of their shirt. No more native American Chiefs with full headress on celebrating after a touchdown. Thus taking away the skin color racial element. Would that work? If not, then maybe, since the team is in D.C. they should just call themselves the Washington Spenders. Change the team color to green, take the Indian Chief logo off of the helmets and put a big dollar sign on it.
