thebigsamoan, nothing derogatory, they just call it UDub because it is short for UW ("You Double-You"-->"You Dub"-->UDub). Nationally, it's synonymous with Washington, but people in Wyoming and Wisconsin sometimes say it in connection with the Cowboys or Badgers, respectively, where it is generally understood, just like nationally "The U" is synonymous with Miami (Fl), but locally understood and attributed to the U of Utah.

"thebigsamoan, if your question was serious, I believe it is a acronym commonly used for University of Washington."

I see that it is some kind of an acronym for UW! But what does it mean or stand for? Udub or U of Dub? I'm seriously curious to know. But, if it's something derogatory to that great institution, then I don't care to know and no one need to respond.

And thank you Surf, for caring enough to respond.

Go Cougars! Go Aggies! and good luck in basketball this year Utes! Sorry we won't get to play you one more time in a bowl like I had hoped! On the other hand, after witnessing the 1st half against Nevada last weekend, maybe it was a good thing after all. The possibility of going 5 and 0 against the Utes would be too much for me to swallow.

Love the cougs and glad they won, but I gotta admit, they really under achieved this year. Gotta hand it to the Aggies, for the second year in a row they are obviously the best college football team in the state. Too bad Keaton and Whimpey were lost to injury. You guys would have really made some noise with them playing a full season.

    @ PAC man

And if this Utah team had been lucky enough to play the 32nd ranked schedule it too would have 7-8 wins. If BYU played the #1 ranked SOS, the Cougs would have probably missed a bowl game as well. And yes, Sagarin includes SOS in his ranking, but win total is weighted much heavier than SOS. That is the reason 11-win North Dakota St. and Eastern Illinois both found their way into the top 30. Coincidentally, ranked above both BYU and Utah. Do you honestly believe the Bison or Panthers are better than the Cougs and Utes? Ranking rewards teams for a season of work, they do not necessarily pick the best team. That is determined by on-field results.

Why is that pathetic? Conf. wins are far more important than wins over USU and BYU. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but the Y is not the center of the universe. And no, I would prefer Utah was bowling. Hence the reason I said I would trade in-state wins for wins in the PAC-12. Reading comprehension, bud. Give it a try sometime.

There's no place like home for the holidays... Just like Nick Saban in 2008, Stanford didn't really want to be in SLC this season. They got owned...or maybe they weren't that good anyway. Just like Pitt in 2004.

Congratulations to BYU on the win. However the small margin of victory is a concern. If the Cougar Administration's goal is to be ranked in the top 25 next year they are going to have to slap Washington around in their bowl game. Their strength of schedule next year will not do it alone. Luckily the Cougs will not have a loss to a 5 - 7, 10th place PAC 12 team showing up on their resume. The Utes really need to up their game so they quit dragging Utah's winning teams resumes down. But it is like the Ute faithful say, better to lose in a big pond than win in a small pond. We'll I gotta run, getting ready for USU' s 2 remaining bowl games. Some of our teams earned the right to continue to play. Can't wait to read Crispy's and Stang08's negative rhetoric next week. Will they still comment now that their seasons are over? I imagine so. However, Crispy's repetitive assertions are becoming more and more mundane and less relavent.

  • Riverton Cougar Riverton, UT

    Great point, PAC Man.

Since BYU's strength of schedule this year is a little tougher than Utah's SOS last year, we now have apples and apples to compare. The verdict is that BYU certainly CAN compete at a high level, and that since BYU went 8-4 (going to a bowl game as well) with the #32 ranked SOS this year, if they were in Utah's situation in the PAC they could also do 8-4 and go to a bowl game. After all, if you can go 8-4 against the #32 schedule, why not be able to go 8-4 against the #41 schedule?

Also, as has already been pointed out, the rankings already consider SOS. Hence BYU will ranked higher than Utah (in other words, BYU will be considered nationally to be the better team) DESPITE their SOS, not because of it.

"The eight wins only came because of cup cakes like Nevada and the other no-names they played."

LOL at your desperate, and deceitful, claim.

Any fan trying to claim that TEXAS is a no-name cupcake has already lost all credibility. With a #34 SOS the dwarf's Utah's #67 2004 and #56 2008 SOSs, the Longhorns are one win away from winning the Big 12 championship and playing in a BCS bowl game.

BYU beat SIX bowl teams that will each finish with at least 7 regular season wins:

    #32 Texas(8-3)
    #92 Mid Tenn St(8-4)
    #42 Utah St(8-4)
    #30 Ga Tech(7-5)
    #47 Houston(8-4)
    #46 Boise St (8-4)

  • PAC man Anaheim, CA
    Dec. 1, 2013 4:07 p.m.

"Also, don't forget that this is the third time in the past three years that Utah has finished with a significantly higher SOS."

BYU's 2013 #32 SOS was HIGHER than ANY previous schedule in Utah history. Prior to this season, the toughest SOS Utah had ever played was #41 last season. BYU played tougher schedules in 2003 (#14), 2004 (#11), and 2013 (#32).

Since Sagarin already calculates SOS into his ranking formula, why do whiny Utah fans continue to falsely claim that Utah's lower ranking is solely attributable to Utah's tougher SOS?

    bottom line:

    2013 #28 BYU > #33 Utah
    2012 #26 BYU > #61 Utah
    2011 #34 BYU > #39 Utah

According to the new Utah fan narrative, where SOS trumps all, Utah's 2004 and 2008 seasons were really quite meaningless, since the Utes only played the 67th and 56th toughest schedules in 2004 and 2008.

The Y had their chance for success this year with games against the U as well as Wisconsin and ND and they lost all three. The eight wins only came because of cup cakes like Nevada and the other no-names they played. I think you ought to have to earn a bowl invite by having 8 quality wins...not just 8 wins.

Just read all the comments... Very entertaining... Thanks ute fans...

Looks like the Cougs get the U of Dub on 12/27/13 in SF at the Fight Hunger Bowl (this year's bowl game for BYU... the 9th in a row)... I actually feel pretty good about it... Cougs are 4-3 against the Huskies and this will hopefully make it 5-3 (unfortunately for the utes they are still winless against the Huskies and they are in the same conference now)... The U of Dub are 8-4 on the year after whipping the WSU Cougars this afternoon (the same team that jumped on the utes last week)...

Incidentally, I do want to offer congratulations to the utes... They beat a very tough opponent from the University of Colorado today who had previously knocked over such powerhouses as Central Arkansas, Charleston Southern, and (1-11) California (who eeked out a win against Portland State earlier in the season)...this win allowed the utes to "snag" 10th place out of 12 teams(as the DN said about their Basketball team last year). Good job...

This one is on the Coaches. Bronco claimed after the game, like he always does, that the competition (Nevada) is a fine football team. That's a bunch of horse hockey! Nevada was pitiful this year and everyone (except the brilliant Bronco Mendenhall) knows it. THis years Wolfpack team was POOR. Yet our coaching staff couldn't put together a game plan. Robert Anae continues to show us why he was "fired" the first time. It's time for BYU and its coaches to put up or shut up.
Broncos phony Humble statements and postgame interviews need to go. Let loose a little so that your players, assistant coaches and fans know you're not a robot. It is impossible for a college football team to get "up" for 12 games - nobody can do it, as witnessed by Wisconsin getting blown out by a bad Penn St team today AT HOME!

BYU can't get up for 12 games either as we saw today. They came out flat but got it going in the second half for the win. They realized another bad loss would've been a disaster.

Utes can't get up for 12 games either as witnessed in the Wash St game.

  • let's roll LEHI, UT
    Nov. 30, 2013 8:24 p.m.

With the regular season over, a couple of things are clear.

Anae has no feel for reading a game. It was clear Nevada couldn't stop the run but Anae kept calling pocket pass plays for Hill. Everyone in the stadium except was Anae was baffled as to how Williams could have only 3 carries in the fist half.

Hill is uncomfortable reading defenses and going through his progressions. He's got a strong arm and when he has a scripted pass, with a designated receiver, he throws the ball well. When he has to read the coverage, he's indecisive, has no confidence and will only throw the ball to wide open receivers.
The best defense being played against Hill is by Anae, who rarely calls plays that take advantage of Hill's strengths and more often puts him in positions where his weaknesses are exposed.

Something is up with Van Noy. Don't know if he's hurt or just distracted, but over the past month he's failed to finish more plays than I can count. He's been in a great position and just can't get anyone on the ground.

What was wrong in the 1st half? Sure, the team didn't seem up for the game. But, chew on this stat: Jamaal Williams touched the ball just 3 times in the whole first half.

I kept hearing that Nevada was a team you can run on. BYU certainly proved that in the 2nd half. If that were true, then why did they keep trying to pass so much in the 1st half of the game? It seemed the ball was in Hill's hands the whole time during the 1st half. Now, I know, Hill is an amazing rusher; for a Quarterback. However, you just cannot ignore your starting RB for a whole half. Williams busted his 1st run for nearly 30 yards, but it didn't come until BYU's second drive. After that, they ignored him for pretty much the next 23 minutes. Inexcusable. Was it Anae not calling his number? Was Hill just not running the right plays? Regardless, inexcusable.

Amazingly poor first half. Hill standing around not seeing open receivers (i guess). Surely our big receivers were getting open. The zebras can call something on every play and they did. Overall, BYU didn't respect the opponent and didn't come in ready to play.

But statistically, BYU dominated. The last Nevada TD was certainly helped by some very bad calls. The pass interference was callable, but a similar one in the Wisconsin game against Wisconsin was called off as uncatchable. The Van Noy roughing call was egregious as the QB was still on his feet and inbounds.

    MWC refs for sure.

Hope BYU plays Washington in the Kraft bowl. That will be a fun game. Right now I give the edge to the Dawgs. Price is a much better passer than Hill (at this stage) and Sankey is better (maybe) than Williams, but BYU defense is better than Washington's. Dawgs by 10.

Boy, some of the comments from the uties are really original! I really hope they didn't lose any sleep thinking of those. Sounds like a bunch of twelve year olds.

BYU should be ashamed as a team..Either, the coaches
didn't prepare the team, or ND did a number on the players.
Also the play calling, is the worst. What happen to Hill
    as a QB??

I am tired of the brand of football BYU is playing. Win or lose this game(or the bowl game), doesn't matter. Time for a change at the top. I like Bronco, and his tenure at BYU has certainly been respectable, but it is clear that he cannot recruit the players / coaches needed to get BYU to being a regular in the top 20 year in and year out.

Now maybe BYU is only concerned with his character and his ability to espouse the "BYU line", which if so then Bronco is their man. I too recognize the importance of teaching life skills and furthering the work of the church. But if there is any desire on the part of the powers that be to get to the next level, I believe changes are in order.

Our QB has regressed! He looks horrible; it's like he won't throw it unless our guys are wide open. Throw your receiver open QB! 37 yards in the first half throwing is an embarrassment. He has to be better than this for heavens sake. 10 first half penalties are ridiculous. Not sure if Nevada has one or not, but most of those called looked legitimate. The only joke of a call was the on the first play of the game against 55 for defensive holding,

The coaching staff once again doesn't get their team ready to play. Hopefully the second half will wake the boys up. It's hard to be positive when you watch such a lack of enthusiasm for the game by your players.

Robert A doesn't have a clue, he must think the whole field is the blue zone. shame on the coaching staff for not bringing their A game.

BYU is embarrassing on both sides of the ball. Poor coaching leads to poor preparation. On our way to another irrelevant season!
