Can't wait until Dec 14 for a Utah victory on the hill. The win for the U
will soften some of these ridiculous comments.
CrumJ,While it is true football schedules are usually done 3-5 years out
for OOC it is not the same in basketball! Most schedules are done in the off
seasons because of so many pre-season and holiday tournaments!!! Also basketball
coaches are much more involved and have a lot more say in OOC schedules in
basketball then football! I think it is safe to say we know a little more about
how BYU does against strong competition already this year then we know about
Utah!!! I am looking forward to the game in the HC, anything can happen when BYU
and Utah meet in any sporting event! Go BYU Rise Up!!!
MyPerspective,Well if you don't mind looking silly, who am I to
stop you. You gave BYU too much credit? By thinking the MC had 5000 more seats
than it does? Why is that credit? It appears more like you inflated the
denominator to prove some point about the HC being more full percentage wise,
Just a word of advice, when trying to argue a point, it's usually a good
idea to do a little fact checking. Hence the reference to the internet.Al Gore invented the internet if you believe Al Gore. I was just trying to
make a funny. I'll consider my audience next time.
@kfbobNo it's not too early to see if things have changed at
the U:* No annual mass exodus from the program* Improved
recruiting (#4 PAC-12 class in 2014)Regardless of how many
creampuffs we feast on in the OOC schedule the fact remains Utah is much
improved. Moving forward I would like to see teams like New Mexico, UNLV, and
Utah State on our OOC schedule.Delon Wright is a beast, can't
wait to see how he does against tougher competition.I think next
season is when the fun begins. With Champman, Write, Loverdige, and Taylor I
feel we have the core to start competing in the PAC-12. Go UTES!
humorous that you make wild assumptions based on incorrect facts. You know,
you're on the internet. You can look up things like Seating Capacity of
basketball arenas on the web that Al Gore invented." Yeah, I
could have looked it up but I don't care enough about the subject matter it
to expend the effort. I chose to give byu way too much credit and now I look
silly. Al Gore invented the Internet? Are you sure? Wasn't
the Internet started as a military application by the US Department of Defense?
@ poyman"Don't you think that for a team that plays in the
big bad pac12 to be pulling in half the number of fans for their games compared
to a team that supposedly plays in gyms with roll out bleachers has to be a
fairly big embarrassment for the utes as well as the pac12?... lol."Not supposedly. BYU does play in a conf. with roll out bleachers. The
average size of a WCC gym (excluding the MC) is 4,700. Dixie St. and Salt Lake
Community College have bigger gyms than that. And no it's not embarrassing
that Utah draws less people than BYU because BYU has a bigger fan base, plus the
Cougars have been better recently. What's embarrassing for you is that
even during Utah's 6-win season, the Utes still had higher attendance than
every other WCC team.
Do people not know how scheduling works? Most of Utah's lame schedule was
made in the midst of its worst season in program history two years ago. Last
year the team still hadn't shown it was consistently capable of handling
cupcakes, so there was no immediate need to change it. This year, it's
clear the Utes are ready for more competition. It's all part of the
multi-year rebuilding process — remember, Coach K had nothing and I mean
NOTHING when he got here. He was hired in the spring after the recruiting
process was over for the year! Now that Utah is looking like a
legitimate D-1 squad, they'll start scheduling much more aggressive.
Don't be surprised if you hear an announcement about a non-conference
series against a big-name team that starts with a "K" in the near
Funny how many byu fans feel the need to come post on a story about Utah
basketball. Why do you bother reading about a team you're so sure that
you'll beat on the 14th? You can discount our schedule all you
want, but Delon Wright (remember? The guy the article was actually about?) would
start on quite a few teams around the nation, certainly on every team in this
state.Oh, and I don't even know where to start with all of you
bringing up the Utah football program. I would think if you were posting with
the intent to taunt Ute fans you would steer away from the football arena,
seeing that you've lost to Utah 4 years in a row, despite the fact that our
last two teams have finished with losing records...
MyPerspective,It's humorous that you make wild assumptions
based on incorrect facts. You know, you're on the internet. You can look up
things like Seating Capacity of basketball arenas on the web that Al Gore
invented. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread! And go ahead and use
that resource to find out that well more than half the seats in the MC are
chairs, not benches.I, myself, am wondering how good and improved
this Ute squad might be. I don't think that it's any clearer after
playing Ball State last night. It's been called their best test yet but
that doesn't really tell us anything. Ball State is #212 according to
Sagarin. It's unfortunate that Utah has chosen this OOC schedule because I
believe there is a real possibility they could challenge for an at-large NCAA
bid. Their OOC schedule is so bad, it can only hurt them come Tourney selection
poyman, you still haven't made much of a case that Utah basketball will be
down forever. Sorry, but during BYU's dark years, when Ute fans who are as
partisan as you are predicted BYU would never be back, discerning college hoops
fans knew that was a ridiculous point of view. It is still ridiculous when you
@Chris B.So which is it? beat a bad team or lose to a ranked team?
My perspective:" Best of all is the fact that byu fans still
think Utah is their competition. "Although there is nothing
competitive about 11 of the last 12 and 7 in a row, as long as U are on our
schedule, U will be 'competition.' Assuming of course your AD who is
afraid of USU and your coach who is afraid of Weber State don't take BYU of
the schedule [snicker].
poymanLincoln City, ORYou know, poyman...I thought the MC
seats 25,000. Are you certain it's only 20,000? I have given byu way too
much credit. Thanks for educating me in such a respectful way. At any rate,
it's not so bad that only 20,000 have to sit on benches instead of actual
seats. Still not sure why you and other byu fans are so concerned
about Utah's pre-conference schedule. Isn't the conference line up
more important? It certainly is for Utah. How about byu?
@myperspective... The HC seats over 15.000... The MC seats 20,900... Now I am
not a math wizard but I can handle basic arithmetic... And that arithmetic tells
me that 16,000 per game against a 20,900 capacity is about 77%, while 8,000
against a 15,000 capacity is about 53%... A differential of about 24% (in any
comparison that is huge)... Not only that, BYU has actually sold more tickets in
4 games than Utah has sold in 6 games... The fact that some ute fans try to
justify the difference based on the number of empty seats in the areana is kind
of humorous... Particularly when we begin the comparison by offering to
"educate me"... lol. As for the discussion regarding
Hill's scheduling strategy, I would hope that he would not agree to home
and home games against Grand Canyon, Savanah State, and Evergreen State... But
trust me, that's not a big coup that he pulled off... Any Division 1 team
would not be doing home and home schedules with NAIA and Division II and III
@Th,You are obviously not being serious when you say "BYU...
actually have nothing to show for it in these past few years that Utah has been
down".Most people would agree that 6 NCAA invites and a Sweet 16
appearance, 2 NIT invites and a Final 4 NIT appearance, 4 Conference
Championships, and a Naismith Award winner is far more than "nothing"...
Anyone that doesn't know that it is far more than "nothing" is
either ignorant of anything concerning college basketball or is knowingly being
illogical and unreasonable in Debate...As for the predictions, I
don't know who we are alluding to when we say that Boise State is a
"Dark Horse" for the Final Four this year but trust me, no wager on this
person's advise... As for Utah finally beating BYU (after losing 11 out of
the last 12 games and being totally out recruited) again, don't wager on it
unless you are wanting to throw money away... BYU by 10 points (just like they
did against Stanford).Oh, and your comments about members of the WCC
being weaker recruiters? The proof is in the pudding... According to the RPI
Utah would have finished 6th last year in the wcc.
I guess the question to ask yourself is why play such poor competition? Boylens
and Giac teams would be 5-1 or 6-0 right now too. It is too early to see if
things have changed at the U. I expect Utah to be 9-10 in the conference. They
have a decent shot at beating BYU if they can slow the pace to the 50-60 pt
What a great atmosphere last night up on the hill, which will only get better.
Major improvement over last season. Can’t wait to see how this and the
next few seasons pan out.Still too many retired devils commenting on
everything Utah. Didn’t know that so many still cared.Go Utes!
poymanLincoln City, OR"The utes are not only having a
tough time with constructing a competitive schedule to prepare them for
Conference play, they are having a very tough time even getting their fans to
the games...Once again, poyman, I must take the time to educate you.
First, Utah scheduled who they wanted and where they wanted to play
them (at home). It is true that Dr. Hill recently acknowledged that the big
basketball names want a home and home arrangement. Dr. Hill correctly waived
off on any such commitment. I suppose it's similar to the struggles Holmoe
has in scheduling big names in football. The current situation with Utah
basketball certainly will change. The current situation with byu
basketball...not so much.As for the attendance...you do realize,
I'm sure, that there are on average approximately 2,000 more empty seats at
byu. That doesn't look good especially given all the crowing you people
are doing about coug basketball? btw...the Utes ranked 4th in attendance last
year in the Pac-12.
RBn,It's byu fans who say its better to pad your record with
lesser competition than losing to ranked teams
I love it....BYU fans are all over it, yet they actually have
nothing to show for it in these past few years that Utah has been down. In fact,
the only team in this state that has anything to brag about is Weber State with
the baller they sent up to Portland! Those who can't see
Utah's vast improvement are either blind or ignorant. Schedule isn't
great. Who cares! Ball State took Butler to the wire at Butler. Utah routed
them! I think most of us recognize Butler.Utah will compete and
possibly beat Boise State, who have been tabbed as this years Final Four
Cinderella. They will beat BYU. They had them on the ropes last year in the far
superior MC. At least as BYU fans put it. BYU has a good recruiting pipeline
from the church. What happens when we go 2-3 years without a decent LDS athlete?
The program slips considerably. The WCC will not bring the athletes that Utah
will be able to get. Especially with Krystokwiak at the helm. Utah's
recruiting is taking shape. Go Utes! Can't wait for conference
CougarSunDevil, frankly I think trying to argue either point is pretty dumb.
However, in case you didn't notice, Chris' comments have been in
response to the BYU fans trying to have their argument both ways. Again, not
taking sides, it's a stupid argument from either standpoint. However, in
basketball your Devils have done nearly the same thing scheduling a couple very
good teams (Creighton, Marquette), a couple respectable teams (UNLV, who
doesn't appear to be the UNLV caliber we are used to, and Texas Tech) and
the rest terrible teams. So far it's worked for them, great win over
Marquette the other night! I'm hoping the same will happen with Utah's
@LCBSoCal Northridge, CAWho's
"wishing"??? We are simply looking at the facts... I cannot recall any
team in Division I basketball falling so fast from a position of prominence to a
position of "also ran" (in fact, on the lower side of "also
ran")... When Majerus left the basketball program fell on its face and never
recovered and the Football program is looking to do the same thing... Sad but
true.I hope that the utes Athletic Department won't look to do
the same thing to attempt to rebuild their Football program as they have in
basketball... It would be a shame to see RES with 50% vacant seats while the
fans who do come have to watch their team play Evergreen State, Grand Canyon,
Lamar and Ball State.
I think it is fair to say Utah seems to be improving. I doubt they beat BYU
this year, but what comes down is likely to go up. BYU should have a good
season and since there are no seniors it seems they have an upside potential.
The utes are not only having a tough time with constructing a competitive
schedule to prepare them for Conference play, they are having a very tough time
even getting their fans to the games... So far the average
attendance (through 6 games all played at home)... 8,000 people... As a
comparison, Through 4 games, the Team just 40 miles south is averaging 16,000...
(twice as many)... Don't you think that for a team that plays in the big
bad pac12 to be pulling in half the number of fans for their games compared to a
team that supposedly plays in gyms with roll out bleachers has to be a fairly
big embarrassment for the utes as well as the pac12?... lol.
Joe Schmoe (from Orem Utah)"Hate to break it to you but Ball state
isn't a decent team. We still don't know anything about this Utah
squad."All true and I don't see anyone arguing differently.
However, for your benefit I will repeat this comment... It will be fun to see
the Utes respond to the competition that awaits them in the Pac-12.Utah athletics is doing just fine. Our football team has shown that the
theories behind the creation of the BCS are valid and our basketball team is
reversing a long slide downward in dramatic fashion. Thanks for asking.
I thought it was a disgrace to play inferior opponents. I thought it was better
to lose to the ranked ASU's, UCLA's, and Oregon's of the world
than beat the "mediocre" Boise State's, Texas' , and Georgia
Tech's of the world. Oh, it must be the justice for you, but mercy for me
Hate to break it to you but Ball state isn't a decent team. We still
don't know anything about this Utah squad. How long until a real game is
scheduled? No bowl game in football, back to back LOSING seasons, and for sure
no post season in basketball with this "we give up before the season even
starts" pre season schedule. What happened to the sports program?
It used to be of a decent caliber….
LCBSoCalNorthridge, CAYour observation is right on point. I
noticed that at least one of the posters you refer to above considers himself a
veritable intellectual giant, too. Funny stuff. Best of all is the fact that
byu fans still think Utah is their competition. They can't accept the fact
that they have been relegated to gymnasiums with pull out bleachers. Comments
from byu fans are always a fun read.I agree with all of the
observations above...our Utes looked very sharp again last night. It will be
fun to see how they respond to the competition that awaits them in the
I like the direction of the program under Coach K, but let's be honest,
Ball State is the first decent team we've played. The first five games were
nothing more than exhibitions. I hope there will be better pre-season
scheduling in the future to get the team ready for conference play and to help
with strength of schedule. Coach K is proving to be an effective
recruiter and Coach Conner is a terrific bench coach. After Chris Hill's
disastrous hiring of Giacoletti and Boylen the program was as low as it could
go. It will take time to get the program where it needs to be but I see
progress on the floor and in recruiting. The new Basketball center will be
another first class facility that will help with recruiting. Go
It's interesting, and kind of fun, to watch fans of other Utah schools
(mostly BYU fans, I'm guessing) pretend that Utah basketball will never
return to a nationally competitive level. Wishing doesn't make it so,
@Chris BYou said, "It's better beating worse teams than
losing to ranked team." You can't have it both ways buddy. Or is that
true only in basketball?I'd like to see Utah have a tougher
This is a fun team to watch. Hope we can continue the streak on the road.
"undefeated pac12 utes"...lol.You don't get prepared
for the pac12 or even the MWC (as you will soon find out against Boise State) by
playing NAIA and Division II teams...It's like trying to
prepare for Daytona by riding your bicycle around East High's quarter mile
track...The only way the utes go undefeated in the pac12 is if they
cancel all of their scheduled games... Didn't the DN say that the utes
"snagged 10th place last year, as though it was a big accomplishment??? It
will be a similar conference performance again this year... And like football,
there will be no post season... And against BYU... the utes will lose their 12th
in the past 13 meetings...go Broncos.
Is this really news? The "undefeated" utes have won yet another game?
That should be fairly easy considering their SOS is 351 out of how many teams?
Ahh yes...351. Too bad that streak will end once Pac-11.5 play begins.
Good game tonight. There were a couple impressive bursts of intensity. There
were some great athletic displays. I am really excited to see what they can do
against better competition.
Great job. So fun to be at the games. This program is headed back to where we
belong. Undefeated PAC 12 utes!
Wright and Onwas give the season some good optimism. No dominant post presence
this year, but good team effort to defend the paint so far. Uncharacteristic
free throw shooting tonight. Maybe they borrowed the Cougars' practice
routine this week? (I jest.) That was the last tune up before what should be a
couple really tough teams, the tougher one (no disrespect, just judging by what
I've seen in addition to what the pollsters and pundits determine) coming
on the road.
This team is fun to watch and are going to make some noise in the pac12 this
year! Thanks for fueling excitement back into the program coach K! Delon Wright
is a baller. I think that kid could be next level talent. Keep it up and GO
Outstanding effort tonight. Well done, Utes!
Loved the energy tonightIt's better beating worse teams than
losing to ranked team. Congrats to undefeated PAC 12 utes !This team will finish between 4-6 in the PAC 12 I think. Ton of talent on this
team Go utes!
