It has taken so long to execute sentence in this case that he may well have dementia. What a sad statement about our court system.

Why are we still talking about this? He shouldn't be alive.

Of course he is mentally ill. We have to quit making mental illness an excuse to get away with murder. He was mentally ill when he killed Brenda and her child. He has been sitting in prison since the 1980's. How could he not be mentally ill? Carry out his sentence. His lawyers are continuing on with this "cash cow" as long as they can, and we are paying for it. End this.

It occurs to me after reading this story that part of the problem we, as a country, have in treating mental illness is that 1) we ignore it until someone acts out violently or 2) we can't even agree on what is mental illness. Also unfortunately, we treat differently abled people as mentally ill. The answer is not drugging it, too often the bipolar, etc stop taking their medication. Autistic children function better without drugs. I have two grandchildren for proof of that. I don't know the answer but the above is certainly the problem!
