If he has a broken finger on his throwing hand, he might have to sit out the season. I would probably not pull the redshirt. For USU the backup quarterback was not good at all so pulling the redshirt makes sense and having an easier games will be good. But for Ute's they have their toughest schedual coming and a freshman wont be a good idea for the Ute's.

Improved recruiting (players with "more stars") isn't just about the starters. It means that the team has better talent in the backup players too. In the Mountain West, the Utes didn't have depth like they do now. We've seen receivers step up, and expect the quarterbacks to step up as well.

Yes it will be interesting if Manning Pulls the Red Shirt. I dont think Travis or anyone will see the field again if Manning takes the Field. Hes that good! Watched this kid all trough HS. Hes accuracy is deadly and velocity is Elway like.

It matters not who the QB is. Utah has decent QB's but not stellar. Defense wins games and Utah's is lacking in that area. The season will end up the same as the last two with no end in sight for more of the same. Utah is clearly out of their league in the pac. They may want to consider going back to the MWC if they ever want a shot at another bowl game.

If Manning keeps his redshirt and Wilson shines the next two years, then Manning could take over as a junior in 2016. If Manning and Wilson compete for the job next year, you risk friction issues.

Manning won't want to lose a year of eligibility (redshirt) only to go back to the bench next year. Transfer considerations kick in high gear in this scenario.

The decision, although not necessarily alive at this point, as far as we know at least, is a hard one for Whittingham, Manning, and his family.

I am high on Manning but he's so young and has only been in town a few months. He didn't graduate early from high school, so spring ball and didn't benefit him obviously.

The injuries Utah has suffered have been painful for all (Wilson, Blechen, Scott, Murphy and Tonga are all key contributors.

Since Wilson was so ineffective in the first half last Saturday (3 for 9 with two interceptions), it seems in hindsight Utah should have started with Shultz before falling behind 20-7. Utah came from behind but the deficeit and missed FGs proved too much on the road. It's too bad. Arizona was a winnable game.

There goes the season, Wilson was the heart of the offense

We don't really know Wilson's status. Whittingham probably knows more than he is telling us (it's understandable). Nevertheless, I can't help but think this is likely a very complicated decision for Whitt.

Even if Wilson can play without damaging his hand further, how effective can he be? If Wilson is out for more than a few games, I think Whittingham stays with Shultz despite the talent of the very highly recruited Manning.

To pull the 18 year old Manning's redshirt could open up a can of worms. First off, Manning is certain to struggle as young QB in the PAC 12. He hasn't had the reps or the understanding of the offense yet. Secondly, if you throw away the season and bowl chances developing Manning, then like last year when developing Wilson as a freshman, you would end up doing so two years in a row and open up a QB controversy.

With Dres Anderson being the only real threat to throw to with the injuries to Kenneth Scott and Jake Murphy, it makes it hard for Manning to throw his way out of trouble without being ready to make good decisions under Erickson.

What do you expect? It's Ute football and they have a 'special' way of doing these things. LOL

Remember how they handled the past two seasons with Wynn?

So let me get this straight: if it's determined the starting qb can't play then the backups move up the depth chart?

Thanks Dirk for your insightful journalism and riveting article.

Ute QB injuries for the third year in a row. Wow.

Does not sound good. Hope it's not more than a game off to recover. Good luck Wilson.

With how his hand became progressively more bothersome since first hurting it in the BYU game to the condition it was Saturday night, this isn't something I expect to see fixed and ready to go in one week. If Schulz or Manning does indeed play, BJ and Erickson are going to have to be much more imaginative with the offense than what we saw this weekend. That SC defense is pretty stout.
