The UH fan sitting next to me asked why we weren't going for it on 4th and 10. I told him with three minutes left and 2 timeouts I was confident we would get the ball back-the UH offense had lots of success against us, but there was no way they could run out the clock. Then when they got the ball back with just over 1 minute I turned back to that fan and said "I felt a lot better about our defense vs your 3-minute offense than your 1-minute offense..." Thank goodness for Fua!

    Orem, UT

A lot of the false start and bad snap issues were due to the fact that the first two drives Taysom was audibly calling the snap count. That is bad coaching-you have to plan on not being able to hear snap counts when you're on the road in hostile environments. Later they switched to a clap-count, but switching cadences mid-game surely contributed to the false starts.

I haven't noticed comments on BYU's huge number of penalties. The false starts in particular are killing me! More discipline, please!

A great game, and fun to watch. Reminded me of the epic San Diego State games from back in the day.

    Go Cougs!

i,m with you on that penalty on the bench,i later found out that it was not the bench or even a BYU player, there was a bystander from the crowd standing behind the BYU bench, complaining about the roughing the kicker hit and would not shut up,but because he was close to the BYU bench they got the penalty called on them, one of the radio broadcasters said something about on the post game show."

What a bogus load of heresay. That said, if I had been closer the official would have felt the smack of a water bottle after the no call in the first where the WR clearly pushed the DB down.

how did that game go against the dominating wildcats?

I was at the game. One of their biggest crowds ever... 40% were BYU fans. Talked to many UH fans and enjoyed them. Everyone agreed that whoever won the game needed some luck.

IT WAS INCREDIBLY LOUD most of the game.

Taysom HIll proved his passing abilities in spades. He got anxious in the pick 6, but the killer (nearly) was in the end zone, but that was an excellent play by the DB. Hill was right on but needed a bit more zip and more space. But he threw some excellent long passes as well as mediums. It wasn't all his legs.

Also, some fans need to take a tranquilizer. They take the games as life or death. Some fans behind us (BYU) booed BYU on Bronco's call at the end to punt rather than go for it on 4th and 10! We turned and cheered. Bad form guys. And when BYU held UH, got the ball back and scored, the lousy fans admitted they were wrong and cheered. Rule: don't boo your own team. The refs needed booing so put it on them.

We loved being there. Exciting. Beats a 0-0 RSL game.

What a game! I love being able to see my Cougars in person-and what a great BYU crowd!

    My observations:

BYUs rushing game takes a huge step back without Jamaal. Hine is an amazing kickoff return man, but can't get around his own blockers when running from the backfield. I think we need to get him the ball on swing passes or something-he isn't agile enough to run through the middle.

The what-ifs really are ridiculous...BYU made a lot more costly mistakes than Houston did and kept the game close. If you take away both team's interceptions BYU scores at least one more time (pick in the endzone) and Houston scores one less (picksix).

Not having Bills in at safety was very costly. I think he makes a huge difference in limiting their big plays. They picked on his replacement all night, often with success. If he was in I have to think he could have stopped at least one of the big plays and made it a much less stressful win.

But a win is a win! Go cougs!

Thanks for sharing that info, bro! I'm glad it wasn't anyone from the team but I'm still ticked that we have those kinds of obnoxious fans that make things harder and give BYU a bad name. I was a nerve wreck during the whole game because it was that exciting and close I was afraid we'd come up short.

If all the 'ifs and buts'....this was an awesome game and you can really see the growth of the team and players.

If Taysom Hill was at this point in August we would have beat Virginia. Candidly, we would have put a couple more touchdowns on the board against the Utes and won that game. Again, all the 'ifs and but.'

No matter, BYU is having a great year. Next up, Boise State, which we have a great shot at winning. Wisconsin and Notre Dame would be incredible signature wins, and if they happen would vault BYU into the top-20 somewhere.

A big compliment to Houston. They win how BYU used to, with high octane offense. Did you catch how many true freshman they had on the field? Several, to include the quarterback. They are likely a team on the rise in the years to come.

Now off to Boise State! I'm thrilled to have tickets to the Idaho game. In any case, good times ahead!

Your last game that meant anything for the standings in a conference ended up with you losing to a Colorado team that hadn't won on the road in 3 years. Since then you have been out of "anything" games with 0-4, 0-4, 1-3 starts. Congrats.

Utah's loss doesn't mean anything either, does it? Or their 3 losses or their one very fortuitous win. Nothing at all, nothing has changed from the last two years.

Great win and a great game! It was nerve wrecking watching though, a nail biter if I ever saw one. After one particular outstanding defensive play that got us the ball deep in Houston territory, the very next play we got called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the sidelines. That ticked me off so bad but never really knew what or who was called. In the end I was happy we came out with the win which was all that matters.

Sorry the Utes lost. I thought they were going to pull it off.

Go Cougars! Go Utes! Go Aggies!

Until the debacle unfolded in Tucson tonight, ASU only had to lose to Utah and Utah would have had the edge for the championship game based on direct head to head results! But, now that is all spilled milk.

To diminish a win against an undefeated FBS team is just irresponsible. 5-0 is 5-0 and a win a win. To base suggestions on different 'what if' scenarios is also irresponsible. Because the whole landscape of a game would change with the very first iota of the first 'if'. Field goals missed... Interceptions not thrown... Both sides of the equation have the same claim to frivolous what if questions. There is only one 'if' that has substance behind it. If that last Houston drive had not ended in an interception it is all but guaranteed the loss would have been in place of a win. Of that there is no doubt!

Many teams on all levels have had to have a quarterback that could convert clutch conversions. So to blast the Cougars for their 'reliance' on Taysom is in effect saying that you don't respect many other players through the years that have been key to wins! Champion players!

    Oct. 20, 2013 12:07 a.m.

Wow, give Houston credit, but it was a crazy game with lots of great plays and lots of mistakes on both sides of the ball for BYU. I think the offense is still improving and we could really use a better defense against the pass. I am worried about Hill running 34 times and getting sacked 8 times, he has got to be sore and I don't think he can keep it up all season.

If we can just get the big errors corrected then we have a chance at winning the tough games we still have left - Boise State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. Go Cougars!

So in the end, the experts got it pretty right. Houston's strength nearly undid BYU's weakness, and they proved to be very, very fast.

Our special teams were good, except for missed field goals, theirs were better.

Nice place to play a game. Houston was very hospitable and classy. Thanks Turtle!

utah's victory over Stanford last week really didn't mean anything either way. No implications for anything noteworthy.

utah's loss against Arizona tonight really didn't mean anything either way. No implications for anything noteworthy.

If you ranked all of the teams in the PAC12 this season from 1-10, ten being highest, one being lowest, then Oregon would rank 10. The rest of the teams would be 5 or less. Which means that the majority of the PAC12 has a lot of parity with those unclean, detestable mid major conferences U sneer at.

Great game. I had the honor of watching two good team duke it out till the end. For those that dismissed this Houston team I hope you learned your lesson. As for BYU they just earned some great exposure to the not just the capital of HS football but in the heart of the city with the best HS teams in the state.

Both team won tonite. BYU earned a win and lots of exposure and Houston proved that they are a team to be taken seriously.

Wow, this game was a bit unnerving... In my book this game was played almost as poorly as the two games that we lost... So many things that I just didn't understand:

. Why is it that Anae doesn't let Williams run outside the tackles?
. Why is it that our Offensive line is incapable of allowing our QB to set up in a pocket?
. Why is it that Hill is still throwing behind receivers and not checking off... On the Pick by Houston in the End Zone he had a receiver wide open on the flat...? On the Pick 6 it was like he looked at the Defender and threw right to him...
. We have inxperienced corners due to injuries so why do we put them in a position to go "man" on deep patterns? Why not give them more help fro the Safety?
. Why is it that the only time we ran a sweep was when we gave it to the FB on a 2 point try? Why not throw or sweep or misdirect with the HB?

. And why do we have replays when it was clear that the replay call was wrong on the fumble recovery?

    @Chris B,

And in other relevant news to BYU:

Texas beat #12 Oklahoma last week.

    Georgia Tech slaughtered Syracuse 56-0.

    What's your point?

The Stanford team Utah beat last week just beat UCLA, which beat Utah. You see, every game is important, but you can't base the entire season on one or two wins or losses.

I'll be happy to answer your question. If Taysom Hill doesn't run the ball almost every crunch play, BYU loses. If Houston makes one of their field goals that were missed, the Cougars lose. If BYU would get back their running game that was promised before the season began, BYU wins big. If BYU doesn't throw any one of the 3 interceptions, BYU wins more comfortably and doesn't have to rely on the last drive to secure the win. If BYU defense doesn't give up all those 50+ yard plays, BYU wins BIG! BYU was extremely lucky, but you have to call in a win by all measure.

A good win, but a terrible game. BYU had nearly double the 1st downs and 200 more yards than Houston and only walked away with a one point win in the last minute? Against a team in the AAC? BYU needs to work on consistency and bringing the offense and defense the WHOLE game or the next few weeks are going to be the most painful of the season.

"byu is just good enough to take care of the second best team in the American Athletic Conference."

Still here on a Saturday commenting on BYU football. We all appreciate you allegiance.

Houston is undefeated in that conference and is tied for #1 in the conference. BYU just defeated the #1 team in that conference on the road in an NFL stadium. That is a solid win. Don't try to discredit the opponent because it shows your lack of education. This game gave BYU TREMENDOUS exposure in the state of Texas. That is exactly what BYU wanted and it will pay dividends for recruits from the state of Texas. Texas is the capital of HS football. Huge, huge victory for BYU besides just the scoreboard and tons of records broken, including Taysom doing something no player has ton since Taj Boyd did last year.

Taysom is a solid QB. He is everything he was hyped up to be. Best QB in the state and it's not even a competition with the others. His stats tell it all.

Solid, solid win for BYU, despite getting back from the Dr. for high blood pressure.

What's shocking is how many of you aren't giving Houston any credit. They have always been a high octane offensive team. This year they actually developed a defense.

And for those who say that this game had zero BCS implications. Um, the ESPN announcers said several times during the game that if Houston wins their conference, they get a BCS bid. No, this game didn't hurt their chances of winning AAC, but it did affect which BCS bowl they have a shot at.

I was terribly disappointed that in order to win this game, they had to return to the ONLY play they can count on, the QB draw. It's just a matter of time. When will the Cougars raise their level? Could be a few weeks now until they get win #6, perhaps Idaho State. A 7-5 regular season looks likely. I'll keep my expectation there, and privately hope they exceed them. Thanks for a barely-snatched win Cougars.

Here's some OTHER things we've learned:

Some so-called 'fans' live for nothing other than tearing down other teams...especially their favorite rivals. I have to admit, it IS flattering (though pathetic) that BYU lives rent-free in some people's narrow minds...oh well. Haters gonna be haters I guess.

As anyone who's seen my posts knows, I'm among the first to wish all of Utah's teams the best...but unlike some, I do NOT delight in tearing down, insulting, and demeaning other teams, fans, etc.
