La la la la la. Thanks so much Dick Harmon for reminding us. We hadn't known that before! Has anyone written an article about all the poor refereeing in that game. Such lopsided calls for the Pac 12 team with Pac 12 referees.

Yeah the Pac-12 is easily the second best conference in CFB, behind only the SEC. Pac-12 refs only officiated half the games you are complaining about.

    how about this one?

2010- "it was the refs fault we lost"
2011- "We gave you all those turnovers"
2012- "the better team didnt win"
    2013- "its a conspiracy"

All of these excuses courtesy of byu fans...

Pac 12 officials handled the game, because BYU doesn't have a conference to get officials from. So the conference of the team they are playing usually provides the officials.

JohnJacobJingleHeimerSchmidt---during the first quarter, did you see the Utah State coach yelling at the refs? After penalties in the Utah game, which continued into USC, he knew what the refs were doing. So does the coach of Wisconsin.

It's not complaining if the observation is true.

BYU was outplayed on both sides of the ball, questionable calls on both sides, Utah was the better team and deserved to win. Very painful to sit on this for three years. Future opponents just saw how to beat BYU......make Hill throw.

Congrats Utes, good luck in your PAC 12 play. As for my Cougars, they need a consistent offensive line and a quarterback who can throw with some touch and accuracy, not just gunning it as hard as he can.....among other things.

poyman: "The one thing that I don't understand however, is why PAC12 Officials handled this game"

This is pretty common practice in football to try to level the advantage of home field, grounds crew, clock operators, sideline crew (when you see the ball boys and chain gang booing refs and complaining, as I did last night, it comes off incredibly unprofessionally on your institution; you're there to work, not spectate; but that is neither here nor there).

Although I disagree with a few of your points, and am puzzled as to how you see them the way you do, I appreciate the respect in it that doesn't usually accompany your posts, so good job. Hope that explanation cleared things up a little.

Hill was so inaccurate that he actually threw the Hail Mary pass at the end of the game out of the end zone. Bronco claimed on several occasions that the quarterback competition was very close in fall camp. I have no clue what A Olsen brings to the table, but, unless Bronco was being disingenuous in those statements, it's time to see what he brings to the table. I don't want to hear for the next 2 1/2 years that Hill gave us a chance to win.

utah won the game and they deserved to win...

But I wanted to make a couple comments about officiating... Both teams had tough calls go against them... The Unsportsmanship Celebration call against utah (although I thought that that might have been interference as well) that kept the drive alive that ended up being a TD; and against BYU the kick-off return that was called back... The last play of the game was also very questionable (the Receiver was tackled while the ball was in the air and the ball actually hit the Receiver while he was laying down on the ground}... How that was not pass interference I have no idea... But all the other calls I thought were pretty even and from my perspective fairly accurate...

The one thing that I don't understand however, is why PAC12 Officials handled this game... I really think that inter-conference games need to be handled by officials from neutral or other conferences... It takes the whole biased confersation off the table.

Bronco says that he loves Hill's competiveness. Well he loved Riley also and look where that went. He left a perfectly great QB on the bench until the last two games who could have gone a long way toward giving the Y a better season last year.

Same thing is going to happen this year. Hill couldn't hit a city with an Atom Bomb. He throws worse that Tebow. He seems like he's trying to throw the ball through a wall as hard as he can. Accuracy means nothing. They better bench him before Hill totally screws up the whole season. Ammon Olsen should have been in the game the second half yesterday.

PS. Get a better offensive line. They really stink. Couldn't block their way out of a wet paper bag. They looked like fat old men out there. They'd all be run until they passed out on Monday. I'd have them running the stairs at the stadium every day full speed. They don't look in shape.

I give Bronco a D- for the game.

Winners are chosen when PAC teams play:

    * Arizona State over Wisconsin
    * USC over Utah State
    * Utah over BYU,& Utah State

When even teams play each other, just a couple plays against one will determine the victory.

IMO--Utah will not do well in the PAC 12,--not because of lesser talent or coaching. But because they are not one of the chosen ones to win. Greater cash flow greater with other teams.

Brilliant conspiracy theory, except for one problem.

The greatest "chosen ones" with the largest cash flow piles are Texas and Alabama.

    Both got rolled.

    The difference Alabama wasn't overrated.

Big game for the Utes. That gets them half of the way to the 6 wins they need to be bowl eligible. Now if they can win 3 out of the 4 games I think they can win (@AZ,@SC,WSU,CO)we will go bowling. Throw in a possible upset and it could be a good bowl.

Keep your heads up Cougar fans Mangum will be back soon. I hope you win the rest of your games and USU too. Its good for the state.

We've got the talent but maybe just not being used well. How about putting Ammon in at QB so we get better pass efficiency but use Hill as a running back in some new kind of wrinkle? He's fast - but can't throw under pressure, though he did have some nice passes at times in the Ute game. Why wasn't he consistent? We've got to use our receivers better! We need some red zone plays we can count on and feel confident about - and that get us scores. How bad is Williams' injury? That plus the Hadley thing took some steam out of us, I think. Mistakes too, canceling out that touchdown run for one. It always seems to be just a few plays we can't make that ice it for Utah. Otherwise, I think we're even or better - just look at the overall stats. They're clutch, we're not...lately. I feel for the D again, keeping us in the game, and watching it get away on the offensive side.

I disagree with Bronco Mendenhall's comment that Taysom Hill put the team in a position to win. During the last 5 minutes it was the defense and special teams that put the team in a position to win and it was Taysom's lack of passing accuracy and poor play calling that cost BYU the game.

Its hard to execute a pass thrown to the end zone when the pass goes 10 yards out of bounds. BYU needs an accurate passer - now; not next year or the year after that.

  • Ronald Uharriet SWun City, Ca.
    Sept. 22, 2013 12:49 p.m.

After the Texas game, Hill was our Hero.
He was given the rushing/running assignment time after time and he did it like a pro.

After the Utah game, we are ready to fire him because he was not given the assignment, time after time to run the ball, so he did not look like the pro we saw in the last game.

Who’s fault is it that Hill was given the job to do what we all knew he could not do well? Who called those plays? Everyone always knew that Hill was not our best passer but he was indeed our best runner. Everyone always knew that the back up could not run well but was the superior passer.

When we know, for what ever reason, that we are going to throw the ball and not run the ball, why not use the back up passer that does that well. When we know that we are going to run the ball, we have the best QB in the Nation or at least one of the top 5.

Why do we not call plays to match the talents of the players in the game?

How many years has Kyle Wittingham been HC for the Utes?
How many years has Bronco Mendenhal been HC for the Cougars?

During those years, how many BCS Bowls has the Utes been Invited to?
How many BCS Bowls has the Cougars been invited to?

How many BCS Bowls has the Utes won?
How many have the Cougars won?

Has the Utes been invited and accepted the invitation to a major BCS Conference ?
Has the Cougars been invited and accepted the invitation to a major BCS Conference?

Since the two new coaches of 8-9 years ago have been the HC at Utah and at BYU, which school has had the most success with their football program?

Which has football the highest on their priority list as HC of their football team?

I hate to say it but if Taysom can't run ALL aspects of the offense then he shouldn't be the starting quarterback. I thought he would get things figured out over the 2 week break but proved that bad weather had nothing to do with his passing problems. Out of fall camp the quarterback competition was even so I agree, give Ammon a shot. I don't know how he runs but we have to have a passing game

  • BYUtah Fan Herriman, UT
    Sept. 22, 2013 11:56 a.m.

Well cougar fans, this one hurts, and will for 3 more years. Yeah the officiating was questionable. But, the Utes definitely deserve the victory. They held BYU when it counted and scored just enough to get it done. Hats off to the Utes. Further, I was at the game and the Utes fans behaved quite well They cheered appropriately for their team and were gracious in victory. The big question is, when will BYU field an offense worthy of the defense. It is amazing that the school that practically invented the passing game, is now so pathetic at throwing the ball. Between dropped balls and passes thrown wildly, it was a horrible showing. Taysom is a terrific runner, but his passing leaves a lot to be desired. Move him to running back and start developing a passing quarterback. This anemic offense stuff has got to stop. The defense deserves an offense that is not continuously letting them down.

    Sept. 22, 2013 10:33 a.m.

I really dislike the school, the players, the coaches and many of the fans, but they played a good game last tonight...

Outside of the no call on the pass interferance on the last play of the game, I thought that the refs did a better than expected job...BYU definitely missed Hadley throughout the game and Williams in the 4th quarter... I hope he's alright.

Bottom line... Utah was better on both sides of the ball than I thought that they wouls be, and Hill and Anae were not as good or as well prepared as I thought that they would be... BYU's Offense has a very long way to go (especially Hill as it is clear that he doesn't know how to throw a touch pass and may never be able to develop that skill)...

All in all it was a good game, just the wrong team won... Congratulations ute fans, not sure how many ways you can cook and eat crow, but I guess we have 3 years to learn.

As tough as this was on Coug Fans it had to be tougher on the Seniors KVN and CK...

Oh well, we wait till 2016.

  • ClarkeinAK Anchorage, AK
    Sept. 22, 2013 10:18 a.m.

Hill is a terrible passer - why did the coaches stay with him? Last I checked, there was a guy on the bench with a pretty good arm...when you're behind, you pass. When you pass, you need someone with far better that 30% accuracy. Taysom needs to sit for a game and let Ammon give it a try, but Bronco has this thing for grit, loyalty, 'he gives us a chance to win' that ends up costing games/seasons.

Good game by both teams. Taysom showed he is a better passer than his stats show, but receivers aren't as good as projected.

Major disappointment is hardly the term to describe this loss! Taysom Hill? Good grief, he couldn't even hit the side of a barn when it counts. So from a goat, to a prince, to a toad! I don't even know what this team is. I'm so sad and disgusted! It's precisely the reason I hated to hear stupid predictions by some of our fans who discounted and bashed on the Utes. This is the pain I hoped to avoid. The Utes are for real! Deal with it! Now I hope they go on to win out their division. The last thing I want to hear is we lost to a Pac 12 bottom dweller. That will be even more embarrassing for us. This is going to hurt for a long time.
