    Sparkley Briefs

Are they in a knot or what?

    "... dingledongs, ...obnoxious, ... insufferable..."

Pretty strong words from a frantic and emotional "fan" complaining about the only game that makes a losing Ute season worth while.

It is your regular season bowl game.

    Enjoy your holiday... again.

Delusional BYU fans calling this game Utah's bowl game? We still have games against Oregon, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and ASU and you dingledongs think we wouldn't trade a win against the Y for a win against any one of those teams? Face it kids, you are not the biggest game on the schedule anymore. I do admit that shutting up obnoxious BYU fans does have large appeal because many of you are insufferable when you win, but we have MUCH bigger fish to fry than you. Put that in your bubble pipe and smoke it.

    @ Chris B:

You are finally right about something.
Travis Wilson is not the lowest rated qb passer in the nation. A fact..
But he does play for the currently 2nd lowest ranked team in his conference... as per PAC12 coaches rankings. Another fact.

    @ joseywales:

It's all fine and dandy that you don't put so much stock in the rivalry game. But apparently, you don't read the posts from other Utah fans. Starting with you #1 spokesperson, Chris B, wins against BYU seem to the most important thing in some of their lives. He posts more on BYU articles than any other individual with constant outlandish statements and predictions.

There are other hard core Ute fans who also seem to have similar feelings. That, and the Ute's dismal conference game history (what happened last week against a lower-tier conference team at home?) is understandably the reasons Y fans make statements about the rivalry game being Utah's bowl game.

And based on how Ute fans stormed the field not just once, but 3 times at the conclusion of last years rivalry game (goal posts had to be protected), most of them seemed to feel that it was indeed their bowl game last season... just like it will this year again.

Sorry if you don't like it, but those are the facts. You're apparently in the minority among Ute fans.

    @ Chris B:

Since you make the correlation between how good a quarterback is and his number of turnovers, and since BYU's qb has fewer turnovers than Utah's does, in essence you are actually admitting that BYU's qb is better than Utah's. Thank you for that bit of realism. It seldom comes from your keyboard... at least not regarding college football.

More realism... If a team can't beat a lower-tier same conference opponent at home, then their chances for a Rose Bowl invite is zilch... nada... all but non-existent. That's exactly where Utah is right now. Facts carry much more weight than your hopes.

Also, has Utah beat any ranked teams yet this year? How about last year? Has BYU? Those answers don't bode well for Utah on Saturday. What will it say about Utah's defense after they let "the lowest passing rated qb in the nation" beat them?

In case you hadn't noticed, literally all college football publications currently have BYU ranked better than Utah, and Las Vegas has BYU a favorite by 7 points. What is it the rest of the football world knows that you still don't?

Yes I would like to see fewer turnovers to Utah, including Jake Murphy, Star Lotulelei, etc.

Not sure who is going to win this game, but I sure do hope Arby's allows me to bring my ticket stub in for a free turnover!

Turnovers will once again be the key factor in this game.

Whichever team finishes +2 in turnovers will win, regardless of the amount of yardage racked up by the opposing team.

"Unlike you, we're still in contention for a power conference title game and Rose Bowl"

    Only in your dreams.

In reality, Utah's chances of playing in ANY bowl will be decided Saturday.

With near certain losses to UCLA, Stanford, @Arizona, @USC, ASU, and @Oregon already penciled in, and @WSU and Colorado no guarantees, the Utes chances of even qualifying for a bowl are already paper thin.

BYU will once again be Utah's bowl game.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you actually have to win a PAC-12 game to be "in contention for a power conference title game and rose bowl?" I think your season was over when you lost to OSU last week. See the thing about being in a power conference is you play power teams week in and week out. Those power teams are going to beat your team week in and week out. I mean do you really think you are going to beat UCLA, Stanford, Arizona St., or Oregon? Combine that with your loss to OSU and possibly a loss to BYU, Arizona, and USC and your team is struggling for a winning season and bowl eligibility period. So yeah go ahead and say BYU's season is over.. If that is what it takes to make you feel better...LOL!

The pipe dream lives on. Newsflash Chrissy, you're safe not setting your Beta Max machine to record the Rose Bowl again this year.

You have to throw the ball in order to get an INT. There is really no comparison between Hill and Wilson. Hill is a great athlete but awful passer. Wilson is a great athlete and passer. Looking forward to a good game!

Dave- I'm so sick and tired of Y "fans" who keep saying our season comes down to Saturday. Do I want to beat the Y? Absolutely! I want to win every game of course. However, the reality is, I wouldn't trade a win Saturday for any PAC 12 win! We have more to play for than an Independent, every conference win or loss matters so much more than the in state "bragging rights" that the Y fans keep saying means so much to them. Obviously having lost 3 straight it means more to you guys than any U fan. Trust me, even if the Y pulls out a miracle, it won't leave my gut hurting as much as the loss to Oregon ST.

Utah will be playing as if its their Super Bowl, they will have all the confidence in the world having won 4 out of the last five games. BYU has the talent this year to win. Taysom Hill, Kyle Van Noy are showing the whole team how to win. This will be a classic perhaps the best game in a decade because each team is talented, motivated. BYU should win but if the past is any indication it will require incredible effort and some luck to pull it off.

If BYU is looking to cut anything back, it should be the QB draw. I'm fearful of the impending injury which always comes to QB's who run so much.

Your season's quest was over in Virginia, just hours after it started.

Unlike you, we're still in contention for a power conference title game and rose bowl.

And will next week, and the week after, and the week after, and the week after, and the week after, and the week over.

What is your best bowl hope at this point?

"Do you think there is a correlation between QB's who can't pass and turnovers?"

    2013 Interceptions
    Travis Wilson - 3
    Taysom Hill - 2

Do you think there is a correlation between QB's who can't pass and turnovers?

So in other words a QB with a 33% passing rate may be cause for concern about turnovers?

Thankfully, Travis Wilson is not the worst passer rating QB in the nation.

  • DRay Roy, UT

Utah is devilishly cagey--they'll have a trick play, surprise with an on-side kick, trash talk from start to's a mistake to not be wary of this on every play. One thing they always display is an incredible preparation and will to win. Rise up Cougars!

  • Elcapitan Ivins, UT

Over the years the turnovers seem to mostly be in the red zone resulting in a score by the opposing team. Goal line ball turnover is what BYU is really good at. I wish them luck. Maybe that talented Utah Sophmore Quarterback will continue to allow some interceptions by BYU in exchange for some turnovers. It will be an interesting game no doubt.

    Sept. 17, 2013 10:12 p.m.

Securing the ball as priority number one is all well and good as long as it doesn't make the team play too conservatively. Teams can be so focused on ball security they don't take the necessary chances to win. Go Cougars!

Nobody forces BYU to turnover the ball.

If we didn't hand the ball away, we'd never lose.
