Neither the U or the Y convinced me this past week end. BYU looked terrible against Virgina then pan-caked Texas. The U squeaked by Utah State with some bit of luck then squashed Weber. I suspect we will know if the Y is for real when they play the U and the U needs to make a statement against OSU...pac12 opener. I suspect the U will beat OSU and the Y-U game will be a dog fight in two weeks. Neither the Y or U may play in a bowl OR both may be be better than expected. Hard to say until a couple more games.

@ Born in Bountiful... here is the info for the 3 teams per USA Today:

    33. Brigham Young (1-1, 0-0) – UP 13
    46. Utah (2-0, 0-0)
    52. Utah State (1-1, 1-0) – UP 14

utah hasn't played anyone like texas so how can we make a comparison? And that is the point about how ridiculous your comment was, you're right there is no comparison to be made. utah has played the 138th ranked schedule in the country to this point, they played a 1aa team and a mwc team. BYU has played 2 teams from BCS conferences one of which was ranked 15th in the nation and is one of the most storied programs in all college football. There sos is ranked 32 in the country.

Your ridiculous comment was that if BYU had been "dominated" by texas that BYU fans wouldn't be posting, and you are right some wouldn't be. But that isn't what happened now is it? BYU pounded 15th ranked texas into the ground breaking school records for the good in BYU's direction and breaking school records for the bad in texas direction.

utah on the otherhand played a 1aa team, in otherwords they don't even rate a mention. And if utah had lost to them utah "fans" might have never posted again, ever. But they didn't, they won so here you are.

    @ u25:

After reading your comments, it's hard to determine if you are trying to be a sports prognosticator or a comedian.

BYU is the only one of the 3 major instate schools to have beaten a nationally ranked team so far this year. And yet, you seem quite determined that both the Utes and Aggies are going to roll over them. Do you have any objective reason why anyone should believe you? Hate for another program is NOT objective. In fact, when the hate element is shown, most readers stop taking that person seriously... as I have you.

Are you going to be man enough to take your lumps and apologize for all the hate spewed against the Y if they should beat the U in 11 days? Since most football publications have the Y ranked better than the U, there's a very good reason for believing there's a good chance they will. If you read the DN yesterday, you saw that USA Today is just the latest publication to come out with their ranking with BYU being 13 spots better than the U.

So again, any reason we should believe anything you're saying?

The best part of fall is watching BYU fans come up with convoluted theories about how the Cougars are on top. Yes, playing in the PAC-12 is challenging. That is why we schedule BYU and Weber - it helps to have a few easy wins on the schedule. Only in Provo can you lose 54-10 and be "the better team."

The best part will be hearing late in the season how BYU is number 1 after losing to the Utes and the Aggies.

Compare apples to apples. Comparing Texas to Weber THAT is a completely worthless statement.

Uh....texas didn't "dominate the Cougars", to the contrary BYU kicked the living snot out of them. Why don't we make an equally worthless statement the other direction.

'The bottom line is this, not a single utah "fan" would be on here if weber state dominated the utesies'.

The bottom line is, not a single TDS poster would be on here, had Texas dominated the Cougies. The majority of you folks disappeared after week 1. Count your lucky stars that your team did a complete 180! Unlike the over-rated, over-confident Longhorns, the Utes will not lay down for the Cougies on Sept. 21st. It's going to be a fierce battle, that much we can all count on. Best of luck to both teams!

"Wow, BYU fans declaring USU to be better than the Utes? Didn't you jokers know that has already been decided on the field? "

Not exactly. We don't know if say hypothetically if Utah and Utah State played each other 11 times would Utah win 6+ or would Utah State win 6+. There's a fun little site where you can pick a team and through a chain of Utah beat ___ who beat ___ you eventually get to Texas A&M who beat Alabama therefore Utah is the best team in the nation (one needs a really long chain to get that to work for Colorado.

Anyway which team is the best in the state? Heck if I know. There's 10 more weeks left of the season. For all we know Utah could go 6-3 in conference or 3-6. Utah State could win the Mountain West or lose 3 more games. BYU could win 9 games or 6 games. At the moment I'll just claim that all three are good teams and probably fairly evenly matched. Considering how the in-state games between them went last year, it's a fairly safe prediction.

"You will ALWAYS be BYU's little brother and now you will always be little brother in the PAC 12."

Actually since the University of Utah was the first established school, by default it's the older brother. But really though, all the "big brother" taunts are silly anyway (especially when two schools have been rather even over the past dozen or so years).

Besides, BYU fans are totally missing an opportunity here. I'm surprised I've never seen a joke like "okay fine, Utah is big brother... and BYU is little brother Nephi". (Then again, depending on the sense of humor of the person, that could come across as a self-righteous comment if not clear that it's all in jest like it obviously is from me since I'm a Ute student).

There have been a lot of comments by deluded haters, accusing either side of making such claims. C'mon folks - learn to read and comprehend the great language we inherited from the other side of the pond.

First of all, Utah played a better team in Utah State (who should have beaten the Utes) and for Utah to brag about beating the likes of Weber State is really NOTHING to brag about. Utah is becoming more and more like Oklahoma, Nebraska who year in and year out play patsies and then in all seriousness believe they are really good. I hope Oregon State puts Utah in its place and the following week I hope BYU can finally beat the Utes. Virginia was fortunate to beat BYU. Turnovers killed them. But then again, one game ie Texas does not make for an entire season.

At least this year the question of which team is better (BYU or Utah) will be decided on the field instead of just people arguing back and forth. Too bad that won't be an annual thing.

Each season is different. It shouldn't matter if your team was undefeated last year or went without a win. You have to prove yourself each week on the field. Unfortunately, the polls are biased and often reflect past performance instead of the talent of the current team. An SEC team that is ranked in the top 10 for pre-season often has to lose their first 3 games before being ejected from the top 20 poll. Other teams fall much faster when it is proven on the field that they really are not that good.

A week ago you were in hiding with most the other cougies that came out of hibernation on Sunday. Try not to forget the cougies have already lost to the worst team in the ACC the same team that Oregon completley destroyed on Saturday afternoon. Also don't forget Tators it's been years since the cougies have won on the filed where it actually matters!

@AZUTE1 I won't chalk up Utah's victory over USU as luck. I would chalk it up to coaching. Utah made the better coaching call to kick the onside kick. USU with an inexperienced head coach was not ready for it. I am a cougar fan and must admit that onside kick was brilliantly executed. As a result Utah proved they are the better team on the field vs. USU.

I can't wait for the rivalry. I love seeing BYU ranked and that victory will be what does it. I just hope Utah can beat Oregon St and hopefully get ranked before they play BYU. I would love to beat another ranked opponent this year.

Who is better and who is worse is a topic that can be hashed and rehashed again and again. Ultimately what happens on the field is what will give the final verdict. In this rivalry you can throw talent and ability and rankings out the window. Anything can happen and anyone can win. That is the beauty of the game. I like BYU's chances!

I'm with you brother, funny how one guy can get the blue trolls in a 'tizzy' fit. But that isn't hard to do, all you have to do is say something positive about the Utes and wait. Chris B has them in their collective heads to the point of mocking his name and posting. It's obvious they log on here just to see what Chris has to say. Which is pretty much what he always says. Funny.

Here's something interesting, SB Nations has a new bowl game projection for all 2013 bowl games and guess who they have BYU playing in the Kraft Bowl... you guessed it, UTAH!

Just type in 2013 bowl projections, Week 3: Does Alabama vs. Oregon still look like a title game?

That would be crazy good but I also predicted it on BlckU months ago. BYU v. Utah in a bowl game. The state of Utah football fans would lose their minds.

Well, now that another week has past and USA Today has been able to fine-tune their opinion about what is really going on in the football world, it's interesting that they now have BYU ranked 13 spots better than Utah. Even though it's still just someone's opinion... just like yours... it's still gotta hurt just a bit since their opinion (the sports staff at USA Today) does indeed carry much more weight than the opinions of both you and Chris B combined.

You are right about the Chris B stuff being "too funny". Everything he writes is. I'm glad that even a fellow Ute troll can see that. Thanks for your concurrence.

You'd better believe there is a lot riding on the outcome of the game on September 21st. Every comment on these sports articles vouches for that. Half of the commenters can dish out crow after then, and the other half will have to eat it. And since you will take the results from the field, come prepared with your salt and pepper.

    It won't be BYU's bowl game. It's Utah who can't qualify post-season.

Too funny! Another story turns into Chris B vs. the trollerss!! And over a story about one guy's opinion. What it all comes down to is play on the field. I think the guy's "guess" at where the teams are ranked is comical in and of itself. Did Texas really drop 26 spots because it lost to byU? That means that he REALLY guessed wrong in his prior rankings! And if he had "guessed" more correctly on his prior "guess", would byU have climbed up as much? Who knows?

I personally think that USU is a much more complete team than byU, that CK is lightyears better than Hill, and USU should be ranked as such. But, my opinion, just like this guy's, is just that - an opinion. You guys can argue and bicker over one guys opinion, and that's fine. I find entertainment in banter too. But I will take the results on the field over one man's "guess" any day. And since September 21 is byU's "Superbowl", you have a lot riding on the outcome! You better hope Hill miraculously learns how to throw by then!

    @ Chris:

You live in a very peculiar bubble. You keep saying things about Utah getting national respect and being a national powerhouse... all because Utah belongs to the PAC12 conference. I like Kyle and his team, but you need a shot of reality before continuing on with your silly charade about Utah owning the world and BYU owning nothing. So here are some facts:

Whenever a fan of one of the other conference teams writes in on a DN article, they inevitably talk about how Utah has not garnered any respect from any of the other PAC12 teams... especially from any of the upper tier teams. They literally laugh at the idea of Utah having a rivalry with any of them... with Colorado the only possible exception. That's fact, not opinion.

Another fact... Utah has yet to beat one team from the PAC12 with a winning record. Not one! How much national respect do you honestly think that has gotten them?

Still another fact. Utah has contested for the bottom spot in the conference each and every year they've been a member. The perennial cellar dweller.

    Losing record last year.

Other fans are laughing at you, Chris.

The point is pull out all the stops. Use every weapon in the arsenal and don't take your foot off their throat. This one needs to be a game for the ages, one that we can watch on BYU-TV for the next 10 years.

Let's get back to dominating the Utes like we used to. The legacy of Bronco Mendenhall starts now and BYU football is primed for the breakout season that will put them on the national stage that ESPN is providing for them.

  • mindgames Aurora, CO
    Sept. 9, 2013 3:24 p.m.

Agree with the article that the change from week one to week two is significant. BYU has two weeks to prepare for the Utes who have had BYU's number the past three years, and Bronco has a great record when he has extra time to prepare for a game.

The game with Utah is critical to a successful season. An 8-4 season would seem successful but if one of those eight victories does not include Utah the season will be a failure.

Last weeks trouncing of Texas, and make no mistake BYU showed up big in that win, but the next game is a season maker. Winning game three will set the stage for a run that will propel the Cougars into the top 20 and set up some very meaningful contests with Notre Dame and Wisconsin on the road.

Open a bag of plays that the Utes are unaware of and put everything on the line to win this game. After the opening drive touchdown try the onside kick. If we recover it we score again and put Utah in a vulnerable position, if we fail the defense will go to work and get the three and out.

It's funny how all Utah has to do is play two teams from Utah to prove they are a "true national program." BYU is going about this all wrong. We need less Texas, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame and more Southern Utah, Weber St. and UVU to make us a "true national program." FIRE TOM HOLMOE!!

And Chris, I truly hope you don't believe your going to build a rivalry with USC, Oregon, or Stanford. Washington State might be a good one, oh but they have Washington. Oregon State could be a good one too, oh but they have Oregon. UCLA?? They have USC, sorry man. The true rivalries are already established, so you and Colorado can enjoy your makeshift rivalry and pretend like you care about it. If byu were half the national power their fans think, surely it wouldn't have been such a bad loss to go from 16 to unranked!

There has been much more talk of the embarrassment for Texas than the amazing play of byu.

I wonder if it has something to do with what a go fast go hard offense did to Virignia:

    Oregon 59
    Virginia 10

Maybe you guys should have tried a go fast go hard approach against them.

    Oh, you did?
