"Utah ended their season last year"

Out of touch with reality, as usual. BYU went on from that razor thin loss and posted a winning season culminating in a bowl win. How did your boys on the hill fare the rest of the season? Can't find anything about them at all from the bowl season and only a mention in passing about the bottom of the PAC bowl against Colorado.

    Crissy B,
And Utah ended their season(s) the moment they entered the PAC.

8-4 season and we'll be in Rose Bowl contention within last 1-2 games of season

    Utah 30
    usu 14

    You can mark that down.

And when will USU's BCS bowl dreams be over? week 1
when will BYU's bcs bowl dreams be over? Week 1 or week 2(Utah ended their season last year, just wanted to remind byu fans)

Too much mercury in the water up there in Spokane. You got those numbers reversed. It will be a 3-9 record.

My guess.......YES. It will be back to our winning ways with a 9-3 record.

As a BYU fan that cheers for the utes when they aren't playing BYU or USU I agree with Xert's analysis. Watching Utah's defense last year I couldn't help but notice the arm tackling and lack of speed sideline to sideline with Utah linebackers. I also agree that the D-line has made things easier on them, but a lockdown secondary (I've always been impressed with ute corners) also takes a lot of pressure off them. Utah has to have better production at this position to be successful in the PAC12 where offenses thrive on mismatches with slot receivers and backs against LBs. Hopefully the utes have some guys that will step up this year and make plays. Good luck utes.

They can't help but improve can they? They pretty much just have to show up for the games to do that.

  • But seriously folks! Eugene, OR

My guess......NO. It will be more of the same but with a 4-8 record.

Last year, during the first three games the team's leading tackler was a senior linebacker as well as ranking as the eleventh best tackler in the p12 (Fagergren). Where did he go after the third game? If I remember correctly, he was basically benched for the rest of the season except for special teams. The team also had veteran and experienced player Boo Anderson who was not utilized. I wouldn't say that the linebackers lacked in talent, but rather look elsewhere for reasons why that position was lacking. I remember hearing the reason for player such young backers last year was for "rebuilding" purposes...so maybe that was a coaching mistake rather than a lack of talent in that position.

I'm seriously worried about this position this season. Every time I hear word out of camp that th offense is really clicking, the pessimist in me says "yes- much like almost every first team offense did last season." Last season they had a wonderful d line manned by one of the best players in the nation to slow the running game and they couldn't do their job. So many missed tackles, so often late getting to the outside, such difficulty wrapping players up. I'm one who has felt that the utes have been seriously overrated at lb for many years and that that corps has benefited from d lines who have their backs. We need to recruit and develop real lbs and not simply look to turn third string qb's into outside lb's. That may have worked in the MWC but it won't at this level. I hope I'm proven 100% wrong on this but I predict that the corners will be just fine and our lb's will be overmatched in most games.

    Probably not.
