No question that the utes had a great run. I like Whit and consider him to be a
good coach. The facility upgrades are underway. Recruiting (on paper) seems to
be improving. But now that the afterglow has been pretty much extinguished, the
question is begged -- when will the next Urban Meyer come along and who is gonna
fill that role of re-igniting the program and getting results on the field?
@ChrisBWe see the silly comments you make each day and write them
off as you trying to stir the pot. This time you have gone too far. The teeny
tiny minuscule amount of credibility just went sailing out the door with your
8-4 guarantee for the utes this year. There is 0% chance this happens. Where
are you going to get these wins? You actually have to play a couple of the tough
teams in the Pac 12 this year with Oregon and Stanford finally on your schedule.
I am guessing you suffer from dyslexia cause all I see is 4-8. mark it down
To the reporter who asked the question and to DN for actually writing an article
about it:"Clown Move Bro"Go Utes!
Classy answer by Coach Whit to a stupid question.
Good for Whittingham. Classy! Fans can learn from him not taking the media bait.
CougsndawgsWest Point , UTGoRed:No I got the point. I
know it's hard to admit, but again numbers don't lie. Utah didn't
improve in year 2 of the PAC but rather declined. Decline is decline, regardless
how u spin it.------------Actually, Utah didn't
decline as much as the PAC-12 teams improved. In 2012 (5-7) loses at UCLA and
at Oregon State were wins at home in 2011 (7-5). Utah isn't
declining in talent, in fact our talent has been steadily improving since 2009
(according to Rivals). The difference is the level of competition
has increased, even from PAC-12 Season 1 to 3.
@ FatMan86"Fact is, Utah's PAC 12 status isn't the
guarantee you make it out to be. Utah has never beaten Boise State. That sad
little blue turf/small market/irrelevant MWC school currently owns Utah. Look at
the scoreboard. And if they were to tee it up today, they'd flatten Utah
yet again. Whit and Utah know this, that is why they backed out of their series
with Boise St. Utah can beat weakling BYU and USU all day long, but in the PAC
they are nothing, and that little nobody school in Boise isn't afraid one
bit"Where in the world did you get your "facts" from?
The record books show Utah is 2-5 against Boise State. I believe it's the
Cougies that have never beaten Boise State (0-3 against the Broncos). Apparently
you are making a false assumption why Utah canceled the Boise State game back in
2011. Utah had to cancel the Boise State game so they can put BYU on their
non-conference schedule. As a result: 54-10 happened on that terrible September
night in Provo.
@No illusions...."Last time I looked all he has done is let his team sit
home with no Bowl game. Oh wait a minute they were in the 2nd annual toilet bowl
last year to claim the crown of the next to worse team in the PAC10.2. In order
to crow at all, you must at least get into a bowl game which the Utes are
struggling to accomplish."You better look again then he has lead
his team to undefeated seasons and BCS bowl wins. He absolutley dominates Bronco
on the field where it matters as well. Come back when Bronco has accomplished
what Kyle has actually nevermind that would mean you could never come back and
we would have nothing to laugh at.....lol
"I know it's hard to admit, but again numbers don't lie."re: Final score, Utah vs byu, for the last 20 years.Call us when
you beat us and when byu has a winning record and goes bowling vs a major
GoRed:No I got the point. I know it's hard to admit, but again
numbers don't lie. Utah didn't improve in year 2 of the PAC but rather
declined. Decline is decline, regardless how u spin it. And BYUs schedule
wasn't much weaker than Utah's last year with a much stronger top
schedule consisting of 5 top 25 teams to Utah's 2.
@cougsndawgsI believe you are the one who missed the point.
Uteology was merely pointing out that the reason for Utah's decline over
the past two years is their obvious increase in competition in the PAC 12.
There are no weeks off, like there were in the MWC. BYU, on the other hand, has
done a good job of scheduling a few good teams, balanced with 4 or 5 lower-end
WAC teams guaranteed to pad their win total. This way voters in the polls back
east who do not see their games can glance at their overall win total and, if
they end up with only 2 or 3 losses, they will vote them in as a top 25 team at
the end of the year. It's fairly ingenious. However, people who truly
follow the football teams out west know better.
Uteology:I think you missed the point. Utah is in decline:Since 2009:2009- 10-32010- 10-32011- 8-52012- 5-7Pretty hard to argue with numbers when they exhibit fewer wins and more
losses every season since 2009. I do hope the utes can turn it around but I
think trying to argue they aren't in decline is a losing cause.
He chose not to get into it. So why beat up on him? Get over it, folks.

Uteology"Yes Boise State has owned us recently."RECENTLY??? LOL at the spin. The Broncos have owned the Utes since
they upgraded their program to FBS."...what has Boise State done
that makes you think they would be any better than Utah or TCU in a real
conference?"The Broncos have curb-stomped the arrogant Utes
every time they've played during the BCS era: 26-3, 36-3,
26-20, and 31-28The truth is, Boise State would be much more
competitive in the PAC 12 than then Utes have been.
I don't know why a reporter would even ask Whitt about this. Come on
DNews-- this should not have been asked and it CERTAINLY should not have made it
into an article.
I think Whittingham doesn't care because he knows he's likely going to
be on the hot seat halfway through this season or next season. He may want to
get that position at BYU someday so better not criticize BYU now or eat your
@fatman86One more thing about accomplishments, Utah success and some
pressure from Congress paved the way for Boise State and other mid-majors:"Prior to 2005, non-BCS schools had to finish in the top six to get
an automatic berth. That meant the likes of Tulane (12-0, No. 10 in 1998) and
Marshall (13-0, No. 12 in 1999) didn't get a shot. Utah did
break through, finishing sixth in 2004. It took the threat of
Congressional intervention for the qualification standards to be loosened prior
to the 2005 season. Since then, WAC champions Boise State (2006) and Hawaii
(2007) have taken advantage of the top 12 threshold to cash in on lucrative BCS
paydays." -- CBS Sports
@FatMan86Yes Boise State has owned us recently. But as
far as accomplishments what has Boise State done that makes you think they would
be any better than Utah or TCU in a real conference?More NFL talent?
Nope. Better recruiting? Nope. Better facilities? Nope. Better coaching?
Hmm, debatable.Boise State would own Utah today? You mean like how
they owned BYU at Boise last year 7-6? And that was a 8-5 "bottom
feeder" BYU team that was ONE play from going 7-6.
@cg"If with a win against BYU, U still weren't good enough
play in a bowl."Let me get this straight. A BYU fan talking
smack against Utah and their ability to play in a bowl? A quick review of the
facts: The U has played in a bowl game 9 out of the last 10 years. During that
time they are 8-1. Their overall bowl record is 13-4, for a winning percentage
of .764. BYU, on the other hand, has a 13-17-1 bowl record, for a percentage of
.433. The facts speak for themselves. It's true that Utah
missed out on a bowl game last year by one game. This comes with playing a much
more difficult schedule now in the PAC 12. They don't have the luxury of
playing 4 or 5 weak WAC teams to pad their win total like BYU has done.
@smart aleckOn what do you base your statement that all Coach Whitt
gets are losses? He has owned BYU since he became head coach. He had more
victories than Bronco had until he began playing in the much harder PAC 12, as
opposed to BYU's schedule of feasting on lower-WAC teams. You call him an
"embarrassment for the state of the program". How on earth do you come
to that conclusion? You don't see him coming up with gimmicks such as
"Quest for Perfection," putting hokey slogans on the back of players
jerseys, etc. All he does is focus on putting out a competitive, no-nonsense
program year after year. Tell us again how that is an "embarrassment for
the state of the program".@fatman86Your comments are
the reasons why most fans in Utah hate Boise State. Your fan base doesn't
seem to realize that if not for Utah, there would have been no national
recognition for Boise State. If Utah hadn't busted down the BCS and earned
the right to play in the Fiesta Bowl, there would have been no Oklahoma-Boise
State game. You Boise people owe everything to the U.
Whittingham, the coach of the Utes, had nothing to say about BYU's jersey
fiasco......therefore, DN makes a STORY out of NOTHING?Really?
News Flash: Most Utah fans don't even take Chris B. seriously, only the BYU
fans get caught up in that! You guys let him suck you in every time. I
don't think he even believes half the stuff he spouts off about in his
comments. Utah may have a bad season or they may have a good season, nobody
knows for sure and how does it make BYU any better if they do have a bad season?
How will you (BYU fans) feel better about BYU if Utah has a bad season? Will you
feel better about not being in a Big 5 conference? Will it validate the move to
independence? Will you feel better about yourself? Your job? Your family? I
doubt it. For Pete's sake it's just a game.
@Brave Sir Robin Love your comment! As far as this article? Waste of
No IllusionsMidvale, UT@Chris BSo the great Whits Job is

Seriously? That's ALL he does?Clearly you were in a coma
between 2004-2011.All the guy did was bowl... while Roscoe, during
that time, barely squeaked to bowl eligibility a couple times after playing an
incredibly weak schedule.
Timid Sparrow didn't see what the rest of us saw in Kyle's reaction,
obviously wearing his crimson goggles again. Kyle's face and reaction are
like, "seriously you're going to ask me that?" What a stupid
question, and Whitt being the class act he is didn't bite, and was
obviously annoyed. He obviously saw the reporter as the "curious" and
"oddly cute" side show. But hey Sparrow, if your delusions and
characterizations make you feel less insecure, who are we to get in your way?
Do know what is funny? Even Kyle W played football for BYU.
timid sparrowWhich of course explains the BYU-hating obsession of
the kids on the hill.
Good for Whitingham for not caring. I am sure Bronco doesn't care about
Utah's uniform selection either.
Kyle's answer was a perfect representation of how Utah fans view BYU and
especially Bronco Mendenhall: A curious and sometimes cute oddity, much like a
kitten chasing a laser pointer.
Deep down inside, Coach Whit is a BYU Cougar.
HD"Who's embarrassed now?"U are!If with a lucky win against BYU, U still weren't good enough play in a
Dumb question and even worse article.
Gosh, the classy thing would be to say it was rilly neat.
I don't know how coaches maintain their patience with some of the dumb
stuff they get asked by the media.Who honestly cares?
@Chris BSo the great Whits Job is to Win Win Win?Last

No wonder Whit doesn't care, he knows the chances of getting into a bowl
game other than the toilet bowl is slim to none. Loses this year include,
Oregon, Stanford, USC, UCLA, UCLA, Utah State, BYU, Arizona, and Arizona State.
Looks like a 3 win season to me. Another season like that and the Great Whit
will be without a job!!!
chrissy - Utes 8 - 4? Really? If Utes go 8 - 4, I will never comment on
another Ute article. Mark it down.
What a waste of media time after practice. Why would/should a coach care about
uniforms of another team? Why not ask what he thinks of ASU's Sun Devil
change, or Cal's bear image on the sleeve of their jerseys, or Oregon
State's logo change?

BYU isn't playing a WAC schedule...
I seem to recall some Ute uniforms with slogans rather than names in a rather
lopsided loss to TCU a few years ago. I'd tease Chris B for forgetting
that, but if I was a Ute fan, I'd want to forget that game ever happened,
Nice thought, but wrong way. BYU has got to keep winning and stop drawing
attention to themselves with stuff like this name thing. BYU ought to know by
know, of all people, that every time they do something like this they cross the
line of NORMAL, especially in the football arena. The no play on Sunday tells
the world of sports where BYU stands. The Pac 12 and the Big 12 sure have gotten
the message. Lets let our kids just play football as good sportsmen, living an
Honor code, building further on BYU's already nationally respected sports
Tradition, while developing a Spirit of hard work and never quitting in these
young men and women. Lets not open ourselves up to the "what ever floats
your boat" comments, or those who would rather misinterpret BYU's
intentions instead of appreciating the thought.
@Chris BYou are right, Whittingham and Utah know they are already in
a BCS conference and don't need hokey jerseys or other gimmicks. Also,
they don't need to "shove it in everyone's face". Help me to
understand why is it so important to you to "shove it in everyone's
face"?Fact is, Utah's PAC 12 status isn't the
guarantee you make it out to be. Utah has never beaten Boise State. That sad
little blue turf/small market/irrelevant MWC school currently owns Utah. Look

something to yap about.
Here is what Whittingham focuses on:WinWinWinAnd all he gets is:LossLossLossAnd some embarrassment for the state of the program.
Coach Whittingham comments are reasons he is the best.
Why should anybody at BYU care what Whittingham thinks of BYU's jerseys?
Does Kyle call Tom or Bronco every time the Utes decide to make a uniform
Why would Kyle care ?
Very strange article. Whittingham rightly should have no interest in what BYU
does with their jerseys.
Here is what Whittingham focuses on:WinWinWinAs colleges coaches should. Our kids already ARE
good students(higher APR scores than byu and usu)Our kids already HAVE God
in their lives(if they care to)Our kids already ARE good citizens(without
needing to shove it in everyone's face)Our kids already HAVE good
relationships with family.Utes 8-4 guaranteed this year. We'll be in Rose Bowl contention within last 2 games of schedule. When will byu and usu's seasons essentially be over, and out of
contention for any significant bowl game?First loss! And
I hope we get to deliver it, just like we did last year to byu!We
will end the aggies season after game 1LOL!Go Utes
Thankfully Kyle knows his job is to WIN. Doesn't have time to schedule
bible study or catchy phrases that fall on their face. And yes
cougars and aggies, its hard to win in the Pac 12.Much harder than
playing a WAC schedule We play a tougher schedule than you EVERY
YEAR.Ute Seniors going for perfect 4-0 career sweep over byu.And Utes going for 22nd win of last 23 games against aggies!
