    You've mentioned the big three: Guarana, Inka Kola and Dr. Pepper. I only get occasional gulps of the first two, but number three bridges the gaps.

    Fun article, however, I might suggest you rush back to your sodas immediately; you know what they call those of us who are "light in the loafers". ;)

    Hey coke drinker, how is your gut? Now that I am retired, I quit drinking the carbonated beverages. Not only have I lost weight (moving around more than on the sedentary job, which you probably have also) but I don't have the gas and sometimes irritated bowel issues that bugged me for so many years. My boss saw me with a can on the meeting table and told me get off of it, he had gut surgery a few years prior due to the gasses from drinking a lot of the stuff. Finally, I advise you that I had colon cancer in 2006, over 1/3 of the large gut removed, chemo, taking a long long time to come back to a good "before" condition. I fully believe that soaking my gut with carbonated and sugary drinks had a lot to do with it. Serious stuff. Your column was a bit flippant about a serious subject.

    A fellow pilot! Glad to hear from you! I'm glad I've got the job I have but admit I envy your F-4 time. None of that in my background. T-38s was as close as I could get to what I REALLY wanted to fly.

    Soda: you may be right. I have about one a day, sometimes two. Just depends on where I'm at at mealtime. Mountain Dew if I'm tired, usually in the mornings. Biggest health issue is I don't get enough sleep. Not good. Luckily, I love ice cold water and drink quite a bit of it. Just never with sandwiches. Sugar-free KoolAid, I like and drink that with a sandwich easily.

    So what health problems did you have in your 50s and beyond due to soda/excess sugar? Just hypertension?

    Watch the salt content in those Planter's, GLW8. And if you put that H20 under a microscope, pay no attention to them little critters moving about. :)

    For all you proponents of soda, go ahead, spend your money. I'll save mine--for peanuts! Pass the Planter's please--which I will then wash down with a nice, refreshing glass of H2O.

    I used to fly F-4s and T-38s and envy your current job opportunities of pulling G's and flying on your back.

    Maybe so, now. But when you start hitting 50 and 60, and the normal processes of physical change begin to occur with increasing frequency, you may as I and many, many others have, begin to swear off sugar and corn fructose in any form.

    The real problem is that the food industry has taken the natural fats out of foods, and injected most processed foods with various forms of sugar so the processed food doesn't taste like cardboard, addicting most of America and sparking the obesity epidemic. I recommend you peruse the information on the Weston A. Price website.

    Once hypertension etc. begins to jeopardize your flight medical certificate so you cannot fly your favorite go-machine, you will quickly get healthy food religion. Best to start now when it can make a big difference.

    it is hard to realize when you are young but you will pay for this when you are older, mostly by having your blood vessels in very bad disrepair from all the cola drinks. Sorry, enjoy your caffeine & sugar now because your gonna suffer later.

    Those of you who say you don't drink sodas have never had a Stewart's Key Lime.

    The nectar of the gods.

    Green. Fizzy. Icy cold. Sweet. And, oh, so smooooooth tumbling down your throat.

    Like liquid crack.

    Can't get the stuff where I'm at. Nobody sells it. Have to rely on my student pilots I solo to get it for me via Amazon instead of a bottle of alcohol with a handle on it (a USAF tradition).

    Other favorites:

    - Stewart's Orange Cream (tastes like an orange creamcycle/popcycle)
    - Fanta Strawberry
    - Peach Nehi
    - Welch's Grape
    - IBC Rootbeer
    - Mountain Dew (both the original green stuff and the red stuff)
    - Cherry Coke
    - Mormon 'champagne'.....1/2 Sprite, 1/2 fruit punch

    For me, it's not just the sugar...I actually like the fizzy bubbles and the subtle sting it causes on your tongue and the back of your throat.

    As long as one drinks the stuff in moderation, you'll be fine.

    Can't wait until tonight.....gonna eat some nachos loaded with REAL cheese and diced up jalepenos, washed down with one of my 5 remaining bottles of precious Stewart's Key Lime!

    @CF Mom and G L W8 ... Rather bland, isn't it, just water and milk and fruit juice? You need some variety; spice it up a bit; let the bubbles tickle. That sort of thing.

    Of course, you're probably healthier than the rest of us, but what price a few extra days?

    I guess I am lucky I have never been able to tolerate the feel of the bubbles in my mouth so soda, pop or what ever you call it has never appealed to me. Why would anyone put up with those disgusting bubbles just to drink a ton of sugar that is a truly weird concept. Water is the only sane option It is free, it quenches your thirst,is readily available and has NO BUBBLES Why choose anything else. It boggles my mind

    Others said it earlier, so here's my added voice: if the soda companies had to depend on my business, they'd go broke by end of day! Water, milk, fruit and vegetable juices--the only way to go!

    We all have our vices/addictions. For some it's a Diet Coke and for some it's running 6 days a week. I use to worry about it but since diet soda is the only vice I have I'm keeping it and loving it.

    I am 40 years old. I have not had soda or any other form of caffeine in the last 20 years. I am a competitive runner and run 6 days a week. I can get up at 3 am and drive 1000 miles in a day without feeling fatigued if I replace my usual 12 mile morning run with 1-2 mile jogs during gas station stops. Healthy body does not need caffeine to stay awake.

    Dr. Pepper is my favorite followed by Mt. Dew, but I try to drink these sparingly, more as a treat than an everyday beverage choice. I can go long periods of time without having soda's, and when it's really hot outside, nothing satisfies quite like water. What get's me are those folks (family members, are you reading this?) who drink gallons of diet Coke/soda and eat like there's no tomorrow. Diet drinks are every bit as bad for your overall health than regular soda.

    I love Gabriel Iglesias' line about why he drinks diet coke and he replies it's so he can eat more chocolate cake.

    I haven't had more than half a dozen sodas in the last two decades. I've never been a soda fan but I really let it go when one of my children became a soda addict and ended up with more teeth problems than all the other five children put together.

    But soda pales in comparison to what I really hate: chewing gum. I've cleaned it off the floor, my shoes, even my hands. I've cut it out of children's hair and the family room carpet. Recently a woman who was speaking in sacrament meeting, an otherwise attractive 40-something woman, reminded me of a cow as she sat on the stand chewing her wad of gum. I'm sure I was the more hilarious of the two as I sat mesmerized, my head bobbing along in rhythm with her lower jaw. I couldn't take my eyes off that hypnotizing motion.

    Seriously, to each his own. I have my own bad food habits (meat, potatoes, and zero veggies) to worry about but I am grateful soda and gum aren't included.

    I hate to be the one to tell you, but you are addicted to Sugar! It is as addictive as cocaine. Time to join an LDS Family Services Addiction Recovery Program. ;)

    Curious article. Having previously not drank soda for a year, why would you go back? You explain a life style that demands... well what exactly is demanded... variety? Caffeine? Convenience (it does seem silly to "buy" a bottle of water)? Get a water bottle (one of those 64 ounce ones) to carry with all day or wear a camel back. Water, just plain, COLD water is awesome! As for all those delightful, tempting sodas, get a small mason jar, put the equivalent amount of white sugar that goes into these drinks in jar on your desk as a reminder.

    We enjoy our annual St Pat's AW Rootbeer toast and homemade freezes (not floats)as well as lemon-lime based cranberry concoctions for Turkey Day, Christmas and New Year's just as there are folks who only drink alcohol for special occasions. Otherwise water with an occasional chance for orange juice or even more rarely a glass of milk.

    When August ends you're halfway to 61 days; after Sept, halfway to 122 days... don't celebrate by falling off the wagon.

    Good luck.

    I drive about 3,000 miles a month for my job. And without my best friend, Diet Dr. Pepper, I would have died in a fiery crash years ago.....
