I'm a graduate of Dixie College and treasure my experiences there. But, I think a major mistake was made when they retained the name "Dixie" when it became a university. No matter how you package it, Dixie sounds provincial and has unpleasant racial meanings outside of south west Utah. When Ricks College became Brigham Young University--Idaho, the name change gave the school immediate credibility. My son got into an elite graduate school as a graduate of Brigham Young University-Idaho. He probably wouldn't have been considered if his degree had been from "Ricks University." For the sake of future graduates of DSU, is there any way we can change the name of Dixie State University to a more mature name that will give it more academic credibility?

What? What does Dixie need so much money for? I'll save the conservatives on this site some time and say anything negative in this article must be the fault of Barack Obama!!!
