Within a few weeks we will get the annual bluster and
threats about how they will move to Detroit or some other paradise if Utah
refuses to accede to their demands to squander billions of tax dollars to build
new hotels or convention centers or mountains or whatever else they want.
They are welcome to hold their convention here, based on the merits and
what we offer. But, we should not give into blackmail about them leaving if we
don't do things that do not make economic sense for the taxpayers. Now, if
a private firm wants to risk their money to build facilities, the free market
will welcome them, and they may prosper or fail. Good(or bad for them) but not
a risk the taxpayers should take.
