Does Depp's Tonto make audiences uncomfortable?

    I live in Idaho, and those of us here and in neighboring Utah live around Native Americans and know first hand they are no different than any other group in this great land.

    They did not grow up speaking English and in the time represented by the Lone Ranger and Annie Oakley many would have spoken the language haltingly, like we see on old movies and TV shows from decades ago.

    Why is that racist or stereotypical or something bad?

    You should have seen me when I left Lebanon and came to America unable to speak English. I would often speak haltingly and used simple words. "Me need come store buy food." I have a college degree-I'm not stupid. But try to learn a new language as an adult. You do the best you can.

    Native Americans learned enough English for their needs. Who in this world thinks that made them appear dumb? It made them appear smart enough to learn a second language, which is very hard.
