Wiscougarfan:Nobody said anything about "Power Ratings". I
was talking about SOS. And I just picked up my copy after lunch today.
Here's what it said:2012 Utah SOS: #412012 Indy-WAC SOS:

right, and YOU were just acting out all frantic and emotional. Again.BTW: Phil's preseason SOS for 2013 is reported as such:Utah

he'll talk about the prior season, and give a final grade on SOS. There,
you will find Utah's SOS much more difficult than yours."I'm shocked you never posted an update regarding Phil Steele's
publication. I don't get the magazine but did check out the website. It
says nothing of 2012 SOS, but it does note his preseason top 40 (BYU #37, Utah
NR), his pre-season all-america team (BYU has two players, Utah none), his
all-independent team (BYU has eight first team, five second team), all-Pac12
team (Utah has zero first team, one second team), and final 2012 Power Ratings
(this might be what you were talking about) which rated Utah 129 and BYU 141
(but I suspect bigger is better as Alabama rated 160). That's
what you were giddy about? All it shows is that BYU is perceived by
"entirely unbiased" and "most accurate of all college football
publications" as being better than Utah. Go Cougs!
Cougsndawgs:I can see the trepidation in your last post.
You're worried that Phil Steele will put more distance between our 2
programs. I think he will too.But here's the thing
about Phil Steele:(1) He's entirely unbiased. He's
neither pro-Utah nor pro-IndyWAC.(2) His publications have been
consistently noted as the most accurate of all college football publications.(3) There can be no cherry-picking of stats because neither you nor I have
seen it since it hadn't yet been released.2 more days...
Naval Vet:Go to last years final BCS rankings. That's all anyone
cares about. BYU played 3 more ranked teams than Utah. I will concede that
Utah's schedule is/was tougher top to bottom, but on avg according to the
best ranking system available the schedules weren't as far apart as ute
fans want to think (Utah didn't play anyone as weak as Idaho, but they also
didn't play anyone as good as ND...and remember, the PAC 12 champion lost
to ND before you start citing how poorly ND played in the NCG). I guess
that's just a function of how much better the SEC is than the PAC12 (final

Naval Vet:How many times do we have to do this before you understand it?
Utah played a good schedule last year but it wasn't much better than BYUs.
Again, the best ranking system we have that takes SOS into full consideration is
the BCS...Utah's opponents' avg BCS FINAL ranking- 47.63, BYU- 55.16.
BYU played FIVE teams ranked in the final BCS poll, while Utah played TWO. BYU
had cupcakes (weber state, wash st, Idaho, and NMSU), but so did Utah (northern
Colorado, Colorado, Washington state, Cal). Your SOS argument that you and AZUTE
exhaustingly bring up is a ridiculous argument considering the ACTUAL schedule
and numbers above, which are indisputable facts. Stop making whiney, emotional
excuses for Utah being inferior to BYU in the actual numbers anyone cares about
(wins and rankings). SOS had nothing to do with it...failures from the utes on
both sides of the ball had everything to do with it but you can't handle
that fact so you bring in the spin cycle. I wish Utah all success in the future,
but if their players and coaches made all the excuses you do, they'd never
find any success.

"head-to-head" meetings and "performance vs. common opponents"
as "meaningLESS", while at the same time deem your Defense's
ability to stuff Idaho's and New Mexico State's running and passing
games with substantially more success than Utah's ability to stuff the
running and passing games of Arizona and UCLA as "meaningFUL".Oh wait, you CAN'T. It's just that it's all that you've

I'm hoping this is the year that USU beats both Utah and BYU in the same
year for the first time in who knows how long. This year may not be the year,
but I think our chances are improving each year rather than fading. Last year
was so close, and we have BYU at home. Utah will be a tough game in RES, but I
think it's definitely possible to win there.

underestimating the Aggies. The same goes for BYU fans. However, being in the

don't you look up the final AP poll and BCS rankings for 2010, 2011, and

It's honestly a toss up. You can never tell with instate rivalries. At any
given time anyone can beat anyone. That's what's so fun about them. I
won't make predictions because nothing is ever certain, no one can tell the
future. Only two things are certain death and taxes. Football games are great
fun and I miss playing but to lay any kind of prediction is a waste of ones time
and brain power because as stated before nothing is certain. Prime example who
would've seen the U beating Alabama as bad as try did. Or USU being 11-2
and only 5 points short of a perfect season? Or Rudy getting the sack his last
and only game? Or Jack Hoffman surviving brain cancer to run in a touchdown in
the Nebraska scrimmage? Point is predictions ( accurate, off base or hate
filled) are a waste of time.
@ TechMan2010: BYU was 7-6, and Utah was 10-3 (finished ranked
#23)2011: Utah beat BYU by 44 points, in Provo. 2012:
Utah beat BYU with a 2nd string QB, RB, SS, and 3rd string FS.Yes,
clearly BYU was the better team.
Wookie,One year at 10-2 isn't a streak. We all know how this
year is gonna end up. Not sure of the exact record but it won't be 10-2.
No question about that.
I cried myself to sleep for 6 months after that and that was even after I was
heavily medicated. This year, I am prepared. I have purchased enough
tranquilizers to take down a herd of elephants so I am prepared for the
potential upset/loss...what would it be now that Utah State is on a winning
Sooner Ute - That one is easy .... Virginia!!TechMan - spin it how
you want it .... 54-10, 3-0 speaks volumes louder than your blue spin. All your
bold declarations won't erase the fact that byU will have a very hard time
with both of these teams: Your recent recruiting classes are poor. No Ziggy.
Anae is back, again, after being mediocre his first time around. Doman is gone.
Nobody knows if Taysom will be able to play at all, or if he will be effective.
Trammel is out for the year. KVN may be a Phil Steele pr-season all-American
(and deservedly so), but he can't play both sides. Kearsley is coming in,
but he is a Jake Heaps type head case. byU has way more issues than you will
admit.I would be extremely surprised if byU wins both games. If
they do, I will give credit where credit is due. I would be not at all
surprised if they go 0-2. And TechMan, et al, will have another year to spin
why they were the better team.Go Utes!! Go Ags (after 9/29 of
@Navel VetGood point. But he is new at his position. That
doesn't mean good things for the aggies. It doesn't mean bad things
either but let's face it. Anytime a team get's a new coach unless his
name is Urban Myer the team doesn't do well that first year. As for
TallNSkinny, you just love picking fights without thinking first don't you?
Techman:Can't wait to see you eat your words this season. BYU

Ed - what will we be calling Whitt's head? Just curious.DesNews - you are absolutely correct. USU beat us, not the refs. That OT
offensive interference call was clear and in-disputable. All credit to GA and
his staff. This game should be called "Battle of the Big
Brothers"!Here's rooting for the Ags to win 11 straight
after their first game loss!Go Utes!!
I like how Cougar and Aggie fans insist their teams will improve, but (in their
minds) Utah can't get better. Improved recruiting apparently means
nothing. Coaching changes will save Cougar and Aggie programs, but will work
against Utah somehow.I am curious to see how the Anderson-less
Aggies do. I am also curious which team will end BYU's BCS hopes, yet
The Aggies will have a hard game with the utes but will win as for the cougars
in Logan the Aggies will prevail. Didn't Robert get the booth after getting
beat by the Aggies a couple years ago?
There is no way BYU will lose to either team. The cougars have been better than
the Utes the last 3 years. We were ranked higher, but sadly the Utes had our
number--The better team doesn't always win. With the new changes that have
occurred this off-season I can't imagine BYU losing to an instate school.
We'll beat them in football this year just like we beat them in basketball.
Both Utah and BYU could easily finish anywhere between 4-8 and 8-4 since both
have so many top 60 teams on their schedules. I would rather refrain from
gloating until the team actually does something, otherwise we might have to put
crow on the endangered species list.
Naval VetI stand corrected; how about "very questionable call"? I
will be dissapointed with anything less than 4-2. Tough schedule, but time for
the Utes to rise up!
What officials will be used for this years game? Would like to know who will be
giving us the away from home cooking this year.
Great opener for both teams. This will give Utah a good opportunity to play
against a solid, athletic QB - which they will get a heavy does of during the
Spokane Ute:"Utah will be 4-2 or 5-1 after 6 games with a loss
to Stanford, and a possible loss to Oregon St. or UCLA. Utah State lost
it's coach and won't get the home cooking from the officials like last
year."We'll get OSU, UCLA, and Stanford at Home this
season, but I still think we'll be lucky to come out of that conference
stretch 1-2. And while it's true that we get a bye week before facing
UCLA, that advantage is negated due to the fact the Bruins ALSO have a bye week
leading up to our game.As for USU...that "illegal blocking"
penalty that negated our rightful TD in the first OT was a bad call, but you
can't call it "home cooking" from the officials. Those were Pac-12
refs calling that game.
Stang08:"Utah will not lose two years in a row to the
aggies."I hope not, but it wouldn't be unprecedented.
Don't forget that State went 2-0 against us back in '96 (Wells was on
this Aggie team) and '97 under John L. Smith. Granted the Aggies will be
breaking in a new Head Coach this Fall, but it's not like Matt Wells came
from out of nowhere. He's entering his 3rd season in Logan. I just
don't believe Utah State is the "walk over" game it used to be.
They're a very worthy opponent.
@midpacmajor: Nope; next year, the U replaces BYU with Fresno State @Whoami: Still an upgrade - either way you look at it!BYU has more
Top 25 finishes in the last seven years (5), than FSU has had in their entire
history (3). The Bulldogs haven't been ranked since 2004.Only a
Utah fan would call Fresno St. an "upgrade".
@denewsreaderWhat difference does it make which conference they were from;
a quesionable call, is a quesionable call. Who said officiating cost them the
game? Who in the world thinks that the Utes were intimidated by Utah
State's 25,000 fans? College athletes are not professionals, so I have no
idea what you are reffering to?Bottom line; there was a quesionable
interference call at the end of the game. Did officiating cost Utah the game?
No. They lost to a better team. It will be a much different story when they come
to SLC, watch and see.
Chuckie vs Wilson...definitely not going to be easy for the utes. Keaton is
without a doubt the best QB in the state until Wilson or Hill prove otherwise (a
case could have been made for drafted QB Brad Sorenson last year). Everyone saw
Keaton's progression from 2011 to 2012. If he progresses like that from
last year to this year, that's a scary proposition for Cougar and Ute fans.
I am excited to see how the two teams react and play in the season opener. I
have become an Aggie fan (when they aren't playing Utah of course) and love
to see them do well. I hope for Tialavea's success this year! I had the
pleasure of playing with him in High School and I love to see him do well! I do
think the Utes will pull out the win this year! Can't wait for the opening
Should be a good game. All the credit in last year's game goes to Chuckie
Keaton, and Utah's DEs inability to control the edge. Without Keaton, the
Aggies aren't within two TDs. If he gets close to 100 yards rushing again
this year the Utes could be in trouble.
@midpacmajorNope; next year, the U replaces BYU with Fresno State
Still an upgrade - either way you look at it! And the Y
replaces Utah, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and (yes) Idaho State with
Southern Miss, UNLV, ?, and ?. Even though, as Mr. Holmoe said, teams are now
scheduling in the 2020's. BYU will either play 10 games next year or must
find someone (anyone) to play them. Fellow independents New Mexico State or
rival Idaho may be available. Great games to fill November's schedule
I hope the aggies can keep winnig with there new coach, wont be easy with the
new and much better conference. But the opening game will be a payback for the
All you Utes that think the referees cost you the game last year, you do realize
that they were PAC-12 officials, don't you? If they were intimidated by a
crowd of 26,000, then they are in the wrong conference, and even in the wrong
Utah vs USU should be a close contest to open the season. Both teams have some
serious adjustments to make from last season. Andersen is no longer at USU, but
Utah lost a huge chunk of their defense. I bet the game comes down to USU's
defense vs Utah's new offense. Winning two in a row against the
Utes would be pretty sweet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a two-fer.
Utah will be 4-2 or 5-1 after 6 games with a loss to Stanford, and a possible
loss to Oregon St. or UCLA. Utah State lost it's coach and won't get
the home cooking from the officials like last year. The streak vs. BYU will
continue. Utah will finish 8-4 or 9-3. Not bad considering the schedule.
I can easily see the Utes go 2-10 for the season, if they are lucky. USU is a
toss up at best and they will not beat BYU this year. Chris B can mark it down.
@worf, BYU hasn't won the boot in 3 years. Not going to happen this
year either.@StangCorrect: coaches changed, but Wells has said
that he is staying with the same system. No new system this year.
@Go Big BlueWay to overconfident as usual. That's exactly the
attitude the aggie players should take into those two games, don't you

Aggies win this game against the Utes. The Aggies are very poised and crisp on
offense and the MUSS won't rattle them like they did BYU last year. Best

to be exact, and U were very fortunate to win two of those years. Luck
won't save U this year.
"next year the U replaces BYU with Michigan"Nope; next year,
the U replaces BYU with Fresno State.
A great game to start the season. I almost feel bad about giving Utes another
early season loss again. The state's best qb returns with a great O line.
It will be a great game. It will be a closer match than the beating the y will
receive in Cache Valley.
Could be quite a year for football fans in the state of Utah. All three
universities have much improved strength of schedules this year. Looking at the
list - all three may have arguably their most difficult schedules ever. (And
next year the U replaces BYU with Michigan!!)
Are you dreaming or just wishful thinking. Utah has not lost to the y for
several years and won't loose again any time soon .
Utah will not lose two years in a row to the aggies. Not when USU has a new
coach and basically a new system. And Utah should be angry about last years
upset. Make no mistake about it. Last year was an upset.
No toss up here. BYU wins the Bee Hive Boot, and state championship. Period!
