I first got to know Roger Ebert some 25 years ago in part because of you. I sent him an email about an interview you did with Robert Redford suggesting he might be able to use it on his show. Much to my surprise, he replied personally the next day. He knew you well and then invited me to join the CompuServe Movie Forum. This was before the Internet became available to everyone. For years I corresponded with him there and by email. I have since found out there were hundreds of ordinary movie lovers like me he did that with. He had the ability to write at the speed of light. I don't think the man ever slept.

Incidentally, his car was towed twice the same day at Sundance one time. He was really lit about it :-).

By the way, that post about taking a "leave of presence" was written well before he knew just how sick he was. It was timed to come out on his 46th anniversary with the Chicago Sun Times. The timing was unfortunate.

    Really enjoyed the article!
