    Welcome to Independence - for the Football team! But obscurity for the rest of BYU sports!

    @idablu--Sports4life is un-focused.

    The PAC 12 had more teams qualifying for the NCAA, and NIT tournaments, because Utah provided two extra wins to pad their records.

    That's why big sister was invited into the conference. There's IQ.

    The Utes were part of a good marketing plan.

    You really don't understand the difference between the NIT and NCAA tourney. To say that the winner of the NIT is the 69th best team in the land is a complete crock and you know better. Just look at seeds 12-16. Many of those are there by virtue of conference tourney championships. Many of which are tiny conferences. Like the BCS, the NCAA participants are not necessarily the "best" teams by ranking as a national ranking goes, but I'm sure we don't need to tell you that. A 20 loss team is in the field of 64...simply because they won their conf tourney.

    To suggest BYU, Kentucky, or any other major conference potential NIT winner is not better than those teams is completely idiotic. Then again, you root for the U so that makes sense. At the end of the day BYU is still playing and U are not. I wish all the in-state schools were's great visibility.

    You're like the left-wing media looking for a negative spin on anything to do with conservatives or repubs. Whether it makes sense, or has any factual basis is irrelevant.

    "Quit crying to your bigger brother BYU's a good program but there not as good as Utah is. Your program will never play on sundays, so your arguments are pointless." - Said the little Ute whose team is at home watching all post-season tournaments on their couch as their rival who is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between the two wins a game in a post-season tourney for the fourth straight year.

    If this were Jeopardy the question would be "What is the definition of irony?"

    Not only is BYU the better program, they have done it despite not playing on Sunday.

    First of all I never said that the basketball team was great or could compete in the pac-whatever. I will tell you right now that they are an average team with a very good coach. You take Rose out of the equation and they win 16 to 18 games tops this year.

    I have also commented on how I thought the Utes were improved over last year.

    What I get tired of is the fans that sit here and say whatever univ is so much better then BYU because they come from a better conference they are bigger and more athletic BYU does not have a chance but when BYU wins it is because this team or that team stinks and are not very good and they are the 8th best team in our conference and so on and so on. It cannot be both are they (Washington) good yes and no they were good enough to get into the NIT just like Kentucky, Stanford, Arizona St and BYU but not good enough to get into the NCAA tourney.

    " I really would support BYU if there fans had higher IQ's but it's unfortunate that things need to be spelled out for you so here we are."

    'There' is some unintentional irony in that sentence. I think anyone who doesn't understand what a homonym is has little room to bag on my IQ or spell out anything for me.

    Lots of frantic and emotional spin going on here, as the Ute trolls like to say. Attendance smack from Utes? Really? Ragging on the NIT from a fanbase whose team is sitting at home? Ripping on the quality of another PAC team that finished higher than yours and at least made it to a tournament? Applying courtroom evidentiary standards to a fluff piece that says BYU's #1 in something? Talk about insecurity! But go on, keep telling us how Utah has moved beyond its insignificant old rival.

    I agree, Coach Roses skills stood out last night. If this next game stays close, I question the heart of the team. Can Haws carry them for 2 in a row. I don't think I've seen that this year.

  • truecoug1 Provo, UT

    The best part, though, is how the Ute fans who were gushing about beating Washington a few weeks ago, and who then came onto BYU boards and talked about athletic the Huskies were, and how good they were, are now backtracking, saying that Washington's no good, they're a horrible PAC 12 team, etc.

    I love U guys! You're hilarious!

    On a more serious note, I would imagine that the vast majority of the BYU fan base knows that BYU is not great this year. We have a good, but undersized center, a phenomenal shooting guard, and a very talented, but wildly inconsistent point guard. And that's it. There's no consistency from the bench, we lost two solid players before the season began, we have two walk-ons playing a significant amount of time, a couple of solid role players in Austin and Sharp, and two JC transfers who haven't panned out.

    And yet, for all of that, in our 'bad' year, we still have won 22 games, finished 3rd in the WCC, reached the postseason for the 8th straight year, and are 2-0 against the 'mighty' PAC 12.

    Dave Rose is amazing. I love my Cougs.

    Work hard all summer on your name calling, it's the only satisfaction your going to get after we whoop you again this fall. And tell your friends to save their stats and numbers, they're going to need them all. Go Utes!

    LOL at all Ute fans here trying to take shots at BYU. Major insecurities coming out from the 'fans' up on the hill. We've got 2fer stomping his feet and whining about some survey that has BYU as the top college for Smart and Hot students...hilarious! Of course the survey's 'worthless', since everybody already knows that BYU has the smartest and hottest students of any college. Kind of silly for someone to do a survey on it, that's just common knowledge!

    Then we've got sports4life1 in meltdown mode, proclaiming Utah's athletic program is superior to BYU's when both their basketball and football teams finished with losing records and stayed home for the postseason. Classic! The only significant accomplishment Utah achieved over the last year was sneaking by the BYU football team that all Utah fans say is horrible, pathetic, and irrelevant, and yet they constantly pump themselves up about knocking the Cougars off.

    Incredible! Phenomenal! Arugula!

    Here's a hint for U: the fact that U use beating BYU as your metric of success just goes to show how little brotherish U are.

    Utah 'fans' never cease to amaze me.

    Go Cougars!

    Based on what?
    Do you even live on planet Earth?

    I'll be the first to admit that BYU is no powerhouse this year but you have no claim whatsoever of superiority in basketball. In fact if you take all the intercollegiate sports as a whole, Utah doesn't even come close to BYU.

    I'm really not sure what the heck your suggesting couglifer. All I'm saying is you can't think your such a powerhouse because you took down 2 PAC 12 teams at home that really aren't very good. I guess my question is what do you mean by competing if you consider winning 5 maybe 6 games in the PAC-12 then yes I guess BYU could do that. but there's no way BYU would finish in the Top half this season. You won 2 struggling PAC 12 games at home but I really doubt you would of won those 2 games on the road.

    So you mean like the Ute fans that think thay are all that because they have won 3 out of 4 football games, only 1 by a land side. Yet BYU basketball is not any good because they beat the so called 8th best team in the pac-whatever. I for one am very confussed at the thought process of some ute fans. I believe that 2-0 against PAC10.2 teams should be considered a BYU 'two in row' stat, something the Utes had to wait until the last two games of regular season to string together. Makes it even more significant in these important stats for Ute fans to understand. LOL

    1st 5 Pac 12 teams made the tournament and in the NIT Arizona St has the 3 seed, Stanford has the 4 seed and washington had the 6th seed. So if you can count that puts Washington at the 8th best team.

  • idablu Idaho Falls, ID

    This is what I took out of this game.
    I saw BYU beat a very talented, but underachieving UW team.
    With the exception of Haws, BYU played pretty poorly in the first half. Rose tried to spark the offense with Culvert and Cusick. They were very ineffective.
    Carlino played his potential the 2nd half and probably the best half of his career. His forte is transition. He has made some beautiful thread-the-needle passes all year in transition. And he has always been an exceptional rebounder for a guard. He still takes ill-advised shots and happened to make a few of them, but when he is not on, it kills the team. BYU won because someone (Carlino) besides Haws provided some much needed scoring.
    The biggest flaw of this team all season is their lack of a half court offense. It is like watching an NBA game. There is very little in the way of plays or execution. It is mostly throw the ball to your scorers and have him try to create his own shot, often resulting in a very poor shot or a turnover.

    That was the best combined game by Haws, Davies and Carlino. And against a good team. (It's not like they were playing College of Idaho or Willamette U). If they continue to play like this, we could see them play 3 or 4 more games this year.

    If Carlino and Haws continue to play like this next year (with the addition of K Collinsworth), we will have a very good backcourt.

    After being idle for 11 days, BYU was a little rusty to start the game, but they came on like gang busters in the 2nd half.

    For a player who's been so heavily criticized, Carlino had an awesome stat line:

    5-11 FG, 4-8 3PT, 6-6 FT, 7 REB, 9 AST, 2 STL, and 20 points. If Matt could just cut down on his turnovers, he had 5, he could be a really good point guard, but as some have suggested, he may be better as a shooting guard. It would be great to see Matt practice like crazy this summer to improve the consistency of his shooting.

    Haws is returning to form and Davies played a great game, despite being outmatched physically by his larger counterparts.

    * The PAC-12's attendance avg is only 7800.
    * BYU only had 1 1/2 days to sell tickets to a anti-climactic post-season game.
    * Yesterday Maryland had 4000. St. Joseph's had 3000. Florida State had under 3000. Robert Morris had less than 3500 for Kentucky (small arena). Virginia had about 4800. Alabama had less than 3000.
    * Stanford had a little over 1000.
    * Last year when Utah hosted Washington (they had a whole regular season to sell tickets), their listed attendance was about 8800, and we all know that their ACTUAL attendance was much lower.

    BYU did just fine.

    I went. Good game overall. First I've seen in person in 8 years and 22 before that. The crowd was actually pretty vocal, notwithstanding the old codger sitting 5 rows behind me yelling at everyone to sit down so he could see. I just about handed him a $100 bill along with a note to use it to pay his cable and watch from home. Coach Rose's treatment of Carlino is the reason they won. He knows that this team without a floor general is doomed. We have to have unselfish leadership from the point guard (truly running the offense) to open Haws and Davies and allow for great transition basketball! When Carlino comes out and tries to take over the game, the entire offense atrophies. When he sees the floor, becomes conscious of the defense and knows where his teammates are, he not only dishes and slashes his way to opening the offense, but also improves his own shot selection (and therefore his point production). Coach Rose made the adjustments and had the conversations (according to news sources) with Carlino that allowed for the second half surge. Great job Coach!!

    I'm not sure why Ute fans have such an interest in BYU's attendance figures since 7500 at the Huntsman would probably be their biggest crowd of the year. A few reasons for the relatively small crowd at the Washington game were 1) it was Washington, after all--an also ran from the weak PAC12 conference, 2) middle of the week and short notice for ticket buyers 3) nationally televised game in prime time with no black-out in area, 4) fans disappointed with not making the NCAA tournament. At any rate, for those of us who went to the game, it was fun. Can't wait for round two. Go Cougars!

    Great game last night. Fun to watch. WCC 2-0 so far. Nice to see St. Marys pulling down a first round win. If Haws, Davies, and Carlino can keep this up, watch out.

    Getting Paddled,
    Don't get too excited about a commentator saying that St. Mary's did not play anyone. If you are hanging your hat on this then that "Noboby" is 2-0 against your mighty PAC 10.2

    If Haws and Davies are the motor that run the car, Carlino is a 15 year old with a learners permit trying to figure out how to parallel park...

    That was more like the BYU team most of us expected to see all season. It's not the Big Dance, but it's fun to see BYU playing well in a post season tournament against good competition. Something to build on for next season.

    "I don't recall seeing BYU highlights on national TV, do you?"

    Nice try, but the BYU-Washington game was NATIONALLY TELEVISED on ESPN!

    Meanwhile, that little train wreck on the hill has quietly faded into the sunset now that the post season tournaments have begun.

    btw, BYU is now 2-0 versus the PAC 12. It took the Utes NINE games before they picked up their 2nd PAC 12 win.

    Best analysis I heard from ESPN concerning St. Marys and why they should not be in the tournament, "They played nobody! They beat nobody!" I love it.

    St. Mary's won last night, highlights were replayed several times on ESPN.
    I don't recall seeing BYU highlights on national TV, do you? Perhaps once, but I did not see any.

    This was an electrifying win. Matt Carlino's threes and the steady performance by Davies and Haws held back an excellent Washington team. BYU had to play nearly a perfect game in the second half, hitting critical free throws and knocking down threes. This was the best game of the season which shows BYU has improved and learned. Tennessee if that is the next opponent will be a tough game.

    Not attendance Smack but Attendance FACT. Football games can get 65000 I do not see why we can not get at least 15000 or better yet fill the place for a Post Season Game. Hello there are 30000 students. If half showed up there is 15000. 1/3 and 10000. I know they are busy and have school but so do the players and I am sure glad more than a 1/3 of the team showed up to play the game. In addition there are a lot of people and fans in the Intermountain area let alone Orem and Provo. We brag of our fan base so where were they? Sorry but not Smack. FACT!

    Come on Cougar Fans show your spirit. Go to the game and support your team. Watching TV does not do it. Leave that to us that have no choice.

    I think Calvert was a good sub for Carlino, who was stinking it up in the first half. In fact, if I didn't know better, when I saw a guard throwing up bricks from distance and making passes to the other team, I would have thought it was just Carlino doing his thing. His great second half was fun, but it hardly makes up for the several games we lost because of his unintelligent, me-me-me play.

    Congratulations BYU on a great opening round NIT win over Washington!

    Hopefully many thousands more Cougar fans will join us at the next game.

    If the Cougars had played more games like they played last night, they would have been dancing in the Big Dance tomorrow night. BYU is now 7-0 in home NIT games and should be hosting Tenn/Mercer in the 2nd round on Friday, Saturday or Monday.

    Go Cougs!

    Seriously, attendance smack?

    BYU's 7,500 NIT fans would have been 2nd last year. Iowa topped 13k, and was at least a couple thousand more than any other NIT game last night. And lets not forget, this was an actual warm bodies in seats attendance, not padded by 2 or 3 thousand phantom season ticket holder no shows.

    I'm expecting 10,000+ for the next game.

    Great win and good game. Wish I were in Utah. Would love to go to the game. 22,000 seats and best we can do is a tad more than 7500??? If the next game is at BYU I would hope the fans will Rise and Shout and fill the place. Want to help them win that is how.

    That's a decent win for BYU, a applaud their effort. I have never seen a coach (Washington's Lorenzo Romar) do so little with so much talent. Great recruiter, horrible game day coach.

  • Runner Chandler, AZ
    March 20, 2013 7:41 a.m.

    We all love coach Rose but he almost let this one get away and was basically out coached....again. Playing Cusick and Calvert in the backcourt...together, for most of the first half was nearly a disaster. I know Carlino turned it on in the 2nd half but Rose has got to stay with him a bit longer and not be so quick to pull him out. A Carlino who is working through his consistencies is better than either Cusick or Calvert. And, wow, playing both of them together? Ouch, talk about lack of athleticism.

    Now we see why BYU wasn't invited into the conference.

    They want a team who would guaranty wins for the existing teams. This increases the number of teams qualifying for bowl games, and the NCAA tournament.

    Cougar highlights:

    * loss by five to the number one team in the country
    * 2-0 record against Pac 12 competition
    * 22 victories,--many teams would love that
    * television exposure
    * beat Utah, Utah State, and Weber. 5-1 in football & basketball

    Not perfect, but very good. I'll take that

    Good win, as Carlino goes, so goes the Y.

    You pretty well know what your going to get from Haws. Davies is fairly consistent, but whether Carlino is on or off seems to be the determining factor.

    Every game gives the Y more experience, keep rollin Cougs.

    Great game for the Cougars tonight. My question is, where was this team at the WCC tournament? If they would have played with this intensity and with the confidence of tonight, the Cougars would probably be playing in the NCAA. Really a yo-yo season.
