Phew, good thing that game was just the "warm up". What time do they play the Zags now? I can't find it on the schedule.

    @IRS Agent

You are the BYU fan they insult. Don't egg them on..
I hope you both enjoy your day today, Chris/Naval.

    Chris / Nasal,

Your man Washburn hits the 1000 pt mark, and not a single comment on the article (from the U fans or BYU fans), but you guys jump on every article BYU related. Who is obsessed with whom? You have shown your true colors time and time again.

There is an underlying current of selfishness and distrust that has affected this squad the entire season. Everybody talks about what needs to be accomplished, but nobody has stepped up to truly be the leader of this team.

With good games by Haws, Davies, and Carlino, and solid support from Zylstra, Cusick, Austin, and Sharp, BYU can beat Saint Mary's and would have a decent chance of beating Gonzaga.

Unfortunately, this team hasn't mustered that kind of production against any RPI Top 100 team this season, so the chances are slim for winning the conference tourney and getting the auto-bid.

In the long run, it would be more advantageous, to BYU and the rest of the WCC, for Gonzaga to win the conference tourney and enter the NCAA tournament as the overall #1 seed.

A deep run by the Zags this year, would give BYU and the rest of the WCC more credibility in years to come.

Shout out to Christ B. and NavalVet. I know you guys are lurking out there somewhere. Congrats to the Utes on qualifying for your post season tournament last night. U must be so proud.

My take is that BYU will beat San Diego, St. Marys, and the game with Gonzaga will come down to the last minute. It will be close! If Y's shots got down, they will win. Olynk will foul out and get some technicals!

Let's see how my prediction stands!

Indeed, I hope the Cougs can play with a sense of urgency. However, unfortunately they should have started out their conf. play with that same sense instead of dialing-in the start of the season and now getting to this point where they're now playing for their NCAA-Tourney Life. Tonight will be a very tough test against USD. I hope they pull it off, but I don't see them advancing much further in the conf. tourney.

BYU getting into the tournament is not as important to a true fan of the conference as Gonzaga holding onto the #1 ranking is. Therefore, I am one BYU fan that is saying, please please please do not beat Gonzaga IF you are fortunate enough to get past a hungry San Diego squad and more talented St. Mary's squad. GO ZAGS!

The Cougars played well against the best teams, and for that I'm happy with the team. It would be great to have made the plays to win those games, but that's just not going to happen every year. They're a good team -- not Great, but good enough to be entertaining and keep up the Cougar Pride.

Game 1 should be a warm-up, but anything less than our best and the Gaels and Zags will send us home.

Keys to beating St Mary's and Gonzago.
    1. Davies must stay out of foul trouble. He must be on the floor for 30 minutes each game.
    2. Carlino must play like he did the first half of WCC play. If he performs like he did in non-conference or the last six games - it's back to Provo.
    3. Zylsta needs to hit his average. He is the streakiest offensive player I've seen since Tavernari. 25% of the time he's very good, 50% of the time he's very bad. If he can just be average or above.

Deliver on these three and we get a win against the Gaels. Deliver on these three and we have a shot at stealing one against the Zags, like we almost did in Provo.

Only way to win is someone must step up and lead or they could even go down tonight.

Haws and Davies are pretty consistent... If they are going to be successfull, both need to be consistent through the tournament as well but I believe the real success or failure will fall on the shoulders on Carlino, Zylstra, Austin and Sharp... These guys will need to play smart and aggressive yet under control...

Carlino needs to shoot when he's open and penetrate and dish off without TOs; Zylstra needs to play with some confidence and take the shots when he is open (he has great mechanics in his jump shot but rarely shows confidence in it), and Davies and Austin need to watch their fouls and cut back on the flopping... Austin particularly needs to stay on his feet particularly around the basket...

One key to ultimate success will be their ability to shoot the 3 and step up their perimeter defense...

If they do these things they will make it to the Championship game... And if they make it to Monday and hit some outside shots a little better they could very well make Gonzaga a #3 seed in the NCAA Tourney...
