This was an exciting game. It was my first Marriott Center game since I was a BYU student in the 70's. It was a battle of two very talented teams and coaches. As the game unfolded the strategies became clear, physical close to the rim Aggies and move it around for open shot Cougars. The last five minutes seemed to indicate that Stew Morrills plan was working. The free throw shots by Davies was huge but that incredible put back by Craig Cusick was simply mind boogling. What a story and then to be able to do such a stellar job on ESPN really put the icing on the cake.

So if Utah State would have won the game by 20, BYU still would be the better team (according to the rankings)? What a concept, BYU is the better team, whether they win or lose the game. Awesome!

    The A Game

Utah State did indeed lose several players this year, but to be fair, BYU also lost Collinsworth and Rogers -- BYU was down two front court scholarship players before the season even began.

    @Go Big Blue

You really shouldn't be saying some elses comments are uncalled for. You always go on the attack. And who cares about the injuries. No matter who is injured the other players should be able to step up. Clearly the scoreboard is all that matters. And as usual USU is behind BYU on the scoreboard.

Um, yeah. Beating Utah and Southern Utah (in case it isn't clear enough, both of those schools are in Utah) equals....2. Hence, Utah State went 2-1. Complicated stuff. If you keep thinking about it, one day it might just make sense to you. Best of luck.

@stricker, in case you forgot, basketball and football are two different sports. USU has lost several players this year due to injury. The team last night plus the previous 5 games is basically there 2nd unit. Stew has done a great job of keeping this team together. Stay in Omaha kiddddd... HELLO!!

@The A Game-- BYU beat Weber, and Utah State. The most in state victories. Just admit it.

Despite BYU's 6-3 win over Utah State, the Aggies clearly had the better overall record and higher rankings, proving that the Aggies were better than the Cougars in 2012.

Despite Utah's 24-21 win over BYU, the Cougars clearly had the better overall record and higher rankings, proving that the Cougars were better than the Utes in 2012.

Utah State > BYU > Utah > Weber State in football.

BYU > Utah State > Weber State > Utah in basketball.

The heartbreaker to St. Marys flipped into the elation of last nights buzzer beater. There has been a few crazy games in the Marriott Center this year.

Great win but hats off to USU. With all the problems they have had they still fought hard and just about did it. Have to give credit to the players and Stew.

As for King of the state, come on. If I have to be honest USU football was the best team this year even if BYU did beat them. Sort of like I think BYU was better than Utah but Utah won. USU had the best football team. A made FG at Wisconsen and a couple of plays that go the other way at BYU and USU would have been undefeated. So who is the King? Who cares.

Thanks to BYUtv so we can see these games. Sure is nice.

Now let's upset St. Marys. We can do it.

Actually, Utah State went 2-1. Utah and Southern Utah = win, BYU = loss. Easy math.

Coach Cusick, as I know Craig's dad who was a basketball coach and gym teacher at Provo High when I was a student there in the early 80's, is a great guy. Good basketball coach, loves to hunt, funny, just a great guy. I wish you the best coach, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this ailment.

    Good game, Cougars.

I love my Aggies, but I have to admit that last minute shot was something else. Licking my wounds, but kudos to the Y this year in being able to pull it off at the last second and an exciting finish.

Now, if we could just entice you to rejoin the MWC.....?

BYU Football went 2-1 against in-state schools this year. Utah and USU both went 1-1, so that's why BYU is king. Sorry "The A Game"

Always a better feeling to be on the winning side of a buzzer beater than the losing side. Congrats to Cusick. All the long hours shooting hoops on your driveway, playground and church gym paid off for you tonight.

So it looks like BYU/USU are #1 and #2 best teams in the state in Basketball and #2 and #1 in Football.

Who's number three? Let's see---Weber State, SUU, UVU (except football)...Snow College...????

Strikers gloom and doom for USU is uncalled for.

Injuries clearly explain the struggles the Aggies have had on the court this season. Even then Stew's team continues to compete.

When it comes to football Striker's obituary for USU seems a little wishful - The WAC last season was far from the weakest football conference (remember San Jose and LA Tech), and next season the Aggies return the best qb in the state as well as a terrific defense. While it was painful to lose Gary, expecting the program to fold sounds like more of the same type of predictions Striker has always made regarding the Aggies.

Hats off to the Aggie team, coach and their few, but well behaved fans. They are a credit to USU. The numerous foul calls prevented a MMA event and kept the game under control. Congrats to Cusick. Even though he is not the star, he has real talent and opponents seem to forget that he can score. Best wishes to his father.

Overall season record and rankings always trump individual game scores.

    #16/#17/#19 Utah St(11-2) > ur/#26 BYU(8-5) > ur/#61 Utah(5-7) > ur/#179 Weber St(2-9)

    #62/#62 BYU(20-8) > #112/#103 Utah St(18-7) > #116/#115 Weber St(19-5) > #165/#136 Utah(11-14)

    Combined Football and Basketball

BYU and Utah St are tied for 1st, with Utah a distant 3rd (tied with Weber St)

It was so nice to see the Cougars have a chance to celebrate on a last second shot. I don't care about all the other stuff today; this team has been so close on so many games, that it was nice to see them have one to celebrate.

Fun game! The Cougs could easily add another 10 points to all their games if the big guns--Haws, Davies, and Carlino--could learn to pass to the open man when they are double-teamed or on a fast-break.

If the Cougars expect to beat Saint Marys tomorrow night they will need to battle for 41 minutes. Davies - you aren't a point guard so let someone else run the fast break. Go Cougars!!!!!!

Game was slow and physical because the officials allow our opponents to mug us. Utah State was pushing Haws all over the court.

At some point, this has to stop.

Would have been a total blown out if the refs called it right. They always try to make us loose. We had to beat aggies and refs with just are 5 guys on the court.

Awesome put back for Cusic! Great game.

    I was reminded during the game that BYU has been playing all year without Collingsworth and Rogers, two main cogs in Roses high speed machine, a big time 3 point shooter and a dangerous low man that could have picked up the slack for other words;

Coach Rose Rocks! Another 20 win season heading for post-season play and he's doing it without two seniors! Good luck Cougars with the rest of the year, go have some fun!

So Utah State being named the best football team in the state this year means BYU is "king?" Your logic clearly makes sense.

  • Ironmomo Ogden, Utah
    Feb. 20, 2013 7:19 a.m.

Carlino was the best player for USU going 1-7 from behind the arc and 3-12 inside it. Which probably accounts for USU outrebounding the Cougs. Lucky for Carlino that Cusick was there to pick up his brick, otherwise this game may have had a different ending in OT.

    "Aggies rising while Utes fall."

You say that after they lost? Not sure how they are rising. Their bball team is nowhere near how it usually is and they just lost their staff in football that got them where they are. When USU makes coaching changes, things never improve, except that it took Anderson many years to get to 11 wins in the weakest conference. I don't see how the aggies are rising at all. Please explain.

It was a pretty tough game to watch, especially the second half. Carlino and Haws couldn't have hit a rim 5 feet in diameter tonight. I hope they can get ready for the yough competition in the NIT. This was a home game. What is going on with this team. They could really use some mental toughness and confidence. That comes with good shot selection and teamwork - yes, working together instead of 5 independent guys. Good luck Dave in getting them ready.

    Feb. 20, 2013 6:37 a.m.

Great effort by Cusick... the stat of the game? Cusick's three offensive rebounds, that says it all. If the shortest guy on the court can grab five rebounds you know he's putting in the extra effort and wants the W. Hope that drive can trickle off onto the guys who need to get it done consistently (Davies, Carlino). Great game Cusick, so sorry to hear about your dad. Go Cougs!

  • Mountanman Hayden, ID
    Feb. 20, 2013 6:29 a.m.

BYU couldn't hit a three point shot in the second half but matched USU's physical play with their own! Probably the most physical game played all year. Nearly 60 fouls called in the game with many more that were not called on both sides.

  • poyman Lincoln City, OR
    Feb. 20, 2013 1:51 a.m.

I'm probably biased but I thought the right team won in the end... I think the Cougs outplayed the Aggies tonight despite some terrible 3 point shooting... The Cougs really have some talent if they could just control a couple of things... Davies and Austin have to watch their Fouls... They need to play the entire game like they did the last few minutes... And Carlino??? I have a love/hate thing going with him... He has so much talent... He handles the ball well, he's quick, and he can be a great Offensive threat, but he has a tough time just going with the flow of the game... He has a tendency to force too much... He needs to improve his judgement on when to push it and when to back it off... He needs to take as much pleasure in Defense, in Assists and avoiding TOs as he does in scoring.

  • poyman Lincoln City, OR
    Feb. 20, 2013 1:50 a.m.

If you like watching and listening to Official's Whistles all night, this was your game... If you prefer watching the players perform, the strategizing of the coaches, and the Offensive and Defensive schemes executed then this probably wasn't one of the more entertaining games to watch.

  • worf Mcallen, TX
    Feb. 20, 2013 12:12 a.m.

BYU has now won the most in-state games in football, basketball, and probably all others.

At least for this year--"King of the State"!

    Aggies rising while Utes fall.

    Feb. 19, 2013 11:40 p.m.

    Fun win.

I hope that we see that when we have Kaufusi in the game, that it clogs up the middle and he intimidates the other team. I would be interested to know the plus minus on Bronson compared to some of the other players tonight. If they were to play Kaufusi and Brandon at the same time, you would shut down opposing teams.

Brandon, I am sick of seeing you trying to take charges. So are the refs. You are not getting any calls on that play. Start knocking them to the floor, when they come in the key, on occasion and put some scare in them. We don't need more Nate Austins falling on the floor. The other team makes bounties on knocking him down.

I have come to the conclusion that Carlino will always have more heart than brains. That works in his favor some times and against him in others. Shot selection was pathetic for him tonight. I wish the coaches could get him to be more cerebral and he would be an unstoppable force.

The problems with this team are sooo fixable. Talent is there. So fix them Dave and let's go Cougars.
