A lot of fun to watch! Delta wrestlers had the utmost class whether they won or lost never saw any of them stomp off huffing and puffing! Congrats on taking state and Congrats to Jose Garcia on placing first! Next years 2A tournament should be good, so we lose BYU vs Utah but we get back Millard vs Delta!

@Joseywales, Interesting that you think that. I too thought he had the tilt and should have been awarded the 2 NF, which would have given Hortin the win. I clearly saw the ref count and thought he was going to award the 2. Not sure what happened, or why he was talked out of it.

Payson did not lose in the finals. Jensen, Loveless, Mellen, Loveless, and Judd. 145 was Lloyd from Cedar and Webb from Desert Hills.

Payson went 5-1 in finals. 145 lost to the Cedar kid I believe. And it's true, by the weight of a couple of donut holes, Payson had a kid mess up at the worst possible time. Very unfortunate, but very undisciplined I agree.

So, I wonder if anyone else noticed in the 182 final between the Wasatch and Snow Canyon kid, that the Wasatch kid had the SC kid tilted and I swear I saw the ref count and hold two fingers on the mat, but then didn't score it. It forced overtime and the SC kid won a hard fought match. But, I wonder why they missed the 2 near fall points? I saw the 2 refs discussing it, but the head ref I guess second guessed himself. Weird. I was actually sitting near some SC fans and they thought that their kid had just lost and actually wondered aloud why the score was still tied. I honestly think in the heat of the moment, that something got missed.

I guess Delta actually had five finalists and went 1-4 in their championship matches while Payson went 5-for-5. So depth, again coming from toughness, was the reason Delta took home the gold trophy instead of the silver one.

I agree that Delta is tough and depth was still the ultimate determining factor. Payson had five champs, Delta had one. Payson had five finalists, Delta had four. But Delta had more qualifiers and more placers. They had more placers and qualifiers Joseywales because they are tough. So I think you and Edward are correct.

There is nothing wrong with being a deep team. I'm not sure Delta would have won it by that much bigger of a margin with the old system. In past years, the Rabbits used this to their advantage but their JV team wasn't as strong this year. But their varsity beat Payson and the other teams because they had a complete (and deep) team, taking wrestlers to state in every weight class and having 12 of 14 varsity wrestlers place and all 14 win matches.

The other factor is discipline. Payson had a wrestler not make weight. If he wins a couple of matches by pin, maybe the Lions take state. Certainly, Payson had the individual studs and if the tournament field was stronger they would have won but the Rabbits with the rules in place won out and congrats to them.

Toughness. That's what truly won this title for Delta. Depth wasn't as much an issue this year because they were only scoring one kid per weight. I can't tell you how many matches where a Delta kid was down in the third, and somehow pulled out the win. I chalk that up to toughness, both mental and physical. You just never see one of their kids quit or give up, they feel like they are in every match and even when they are the underdog, they don't believe it. Congrats on a much deserved title. 3A wrestling will look very different next year with Delta moving down to ruin Millards streak, and Wasatch moving up to 4A. It will be good for other teams like Bear River, Union, Uintah to be back in the hunt with Payson.
