Sealants have no effect to whiten teeth. They are a plastic coating. The dental hygienist first cleans the teeth, then a special gel is placed on the teeth, this is washed off and the tooth dried and the sealant placed. Usually on permanent teeth soon after they erupt. It will last 5-10 years and likely save families hundreds of dollars. It is basically a harmless, and painless treatment. Fluoride tooth paste and brushing teeth twice a day is recommended. Flossing at least once a day. The proxabrush a little brush that goes between the teeth and available at most supermarkets is excellent to clean between the teeth where the brush cannot go. Get various sizes according to your need. A Water Pik or interplak irrigator is also useful or at least rinse your teeth after eating.

    Part III

Lie #5 It's detrimental because the witch doctor company is selling a process to replace daily brushing of the teeth.
Truth: Sealants only prevent decay in crevices that the brush cannot clean. All other surfaces of the teeth need to be brushed and flossed daily. No dental professional has ever I repeat ever suggested not to brush a sealed tooth

Lie #6: decay causing bacteria can get trapped under this coating where it can grow, become infected, painful, and fester without being seen or noticed until the teeth need root canals or surgery.
Truth: WHEN PROPERLY applied bacteria under a sealant die. If a sealant is improperly applied it is true that bacteria can proliferate and grow causing a cavity. A dentist worth his salt can identify improperly placed sealants and decay growing under them.

Lie #7 This sealant has little value in decay prevention, a tooth brush and paste, and dental exams are better preventive process and cheaper.
Truth: just read the article about how many millions of dollars in dental treatments have been avoided thanks to this wonderful technology and this wonderful program

    Part II
Lie #3 Many movie stars have had similar process done to whiten and beautify their smiles only to cause major dental damage, implants their only alternative to repair their artificial smiles.
Truth: This is rediculous Sealants have nothing to do with whitening or beautifying teeth. They don't lead to major dental damage. They prevent bacteria from going deep into microscopic crevices of teeth where a toothbrush bristle cannot fit. It's like sealing a crack in a sidewalk. No more weeds grow.
Lie #4 This is decades old technology and it is very misleading and misinforming the public of a procedure that can be more detrimental to health teeth than it prevents.
Truth: go to the Center for Disease Control website and go to the oral health section and you will get the truth about sealants.

RESPONSE TO My2Cents: What my 2 cents said about dental selants is completely and absolutely false in almost every way. My2cents is completely misinformed and completely confused. Lets look at the lies.
Lie #1: Hygenists are not medically licensed for dental work
Truth: A dental hygeinist is a licensed dental professional who specializes in preventive oral health and has completed a 2-4 year program accredited by the American Dental Association.
Lie #2 Dental sealants should be avoided
Truth: The surgeon general reported that tooth infection is the #1 cause of kids missing School in the USA and that dental sealants reduce cavities by 70%. IMO sealants are the best invention for preventing tooth decay since the tooth brush.
