For those who say that "this year" the MWC had three ranked teams.
I'm happy that USU is going to the MWC, next year will be incredible, but
"this year" the MWC had 1 top 25 and the WAC was the best non-AQ
@Chris BActually, Chris, the new MWC had just as many football teams
as the PAC this year in the top 25. Also, don't even get me started on BB.
Comparing the second or third best conference in BB in the nation to the
dismally disappointing PAC teams is laughable. The MWC is becoming a
new powerconference in its own right -- you can beat the money will follow.Best.
The Mountain West Conference? In football, the MWC ended with 3
ranked teams this year (USU, BSU, and SJSU). Also note that BYU was close to
being ranked after their last win over SDSU and SDSU and Fresno was also
"almost ranked."In contrast, the PAC also had three wop 25
teams, with Stanford and Oregon in the top 10.In basketball, the MWC
is already better than 3 of the five "power conferences." This, of
course, is BEFORE the addition of the currently one loss USU Aggies. In short: The MWC is a new powerconference...both in football and basketball.
I give it until the end of the summer before it is announced that the MWC has AQ
bid status to the new BCS playoff. In short, BYU would be beyond
foolish to fail to rejoin at this time.
This article is about Utah state, not the others.
Sure do hope the Bronco's and administration get that revenue deal inked
before inking the Contract to stay in the MWC.Since Craig Thompson
is a liar, as evidenced by his refusal to keep his TV Rights/Revenue promises to
BYU, BSU needs to stay on top of the contract paperwork or walk away.If BSU signs the deal to rejoin first, Thompson will NOT sign the Bronco
Stadium Revenue contract, and BSU will be looking for another Conference in a
couple of years.
It's a sad day in Cougar land when the conference we helped create will not
even take us back.We did not even end the season in the Top 25. We are
better off with Idaho & New Mexico State. At least we can pretend to be in a
conference with them as independents.
AZ Guy, you need to understand that Ernest is not a BYU fan. He's a cousin
to Chrissy via Vernal heritage."Boise State adds value," USU
Director of Athletics Scott Barnes said, according to the Herald Journal.
"We’re in a position of strength and we’ve just added another
school that brings more value to what we’re doing and it’s a great
fit for Utah State in terms of geography."“We’re
thrilled," Barnes said. "It obviously adds value to an already strong
conference and takes us a step closer, I believe, to being the best non-BCS
conference in America.”Not even in the conference yet and
Barnes is talking like he's the spokesperson for it. Someone needs to tell
Barnes that the MWC has always been the best non-BCS conference in America.
Putting such quotes in this article was not a smart journalistic move.
Somebody's editor needs to keep a closer watch on things here.By-the-way Chris, since you are not a member of any team, you will never know
what it is like to be one of the big boys.
A couple of comments, first the PAC 10 was ranked #3 per RPI, Sagarin, and ESPN:
1) SEC, 2) Big 12, 3) PAC 12, 4) Big 10. If that's not a strong conference;
I don't know what is. Secondly, Thanks AZguy and CBPapa. It's nice to
have civil dialogue for a change. It seems like so many on these threads are
here to pick a fight, be critical of others, or blast there rival out of spite.
Lighten up folks and enjoy this forum. Have a good afternoon
Shorts I completely agree with you. I thought Arizona was ranked for a bit and
1 other team. Either way. I think the MTN West should take the Big East auto
bid. If that is even happening anymore with the playoffs. I follow College
ball but that one got away form me. I think it's funny they are only
taking the top 4 when they could easily have a 16 team play off! They
didn't play the NC for 6 weeks. There will still be arguments. I was just
stating I thought it was funny someone said the PAC was one of the
weakest.......such a dumb comment.....
whowhatwhyProvidence, 00Ranked teams this year just in FB-USC,
Oregon, Oregon St.,UCLA, Stanford....just to name a few!!!!Just to
name a few?? You named them all. And only Oregon, Stanford and Oregon St are
still ranked. The MWC had 3 ranked team as well. Boise State, SJSU, and USU.
I don't necessarily agree with Ernest. BYU's independence is giving
what it was designed to give - exposure and control. BSU now has the benefit of
exposure and at least a pathway to a regular BSC like bowl as a part of the
'best-of-the-rest' conferences. BYU has the exposure and
control they wanted, which I applaud them for, but the only certain pathway to a
BCS (big bowl, whatever it will be named) is to be in the top four; meaning an
undefeated season. BSU can lose a game, win a conference championship and still
be the 'best-of-the-rest.'
As a Coug fan, I have to say that Spokane Ute hit it on the head. BYU has to be
undefeated to go to a BCS bowl (or whatever they will call it next year). I
don't even think a one loss season would get BYU into a big bowl unless
that loss was to a very good team late in the season, meaning that BYU would
have been ranked in the top five before the loss. Remember 1996 when BYU got
drilled by the Bowl Alliance. And.....tough games late in the
season are hard to come by (except for 2013). So the scenario of a one loss BYU
team going to the BCS doesn't ring true to me. I hope I am wrong. I do think USU is on the rise and I hope the new coach can continue the
program on that trajectory. I was the black sheep in the family that went to
BYU, so I have a soft spot for USU.
@Johnny,It seems you have jumped to conclusions, that at this time
are not fact. The only bowls settled in the new playoff format, are that the
first year the Rose and Sugar will be the semi-final bowls. "Three of the six access bowls have been determined — Rose, Sugar
and Orange — and the other three have yet to be named, although the
Fiesta, Cotton and Chick-fil-A bowls are the leading contenders."Popping off without having your facts straight. Spoken like a true Cougar fan?
@SpokaneUte seems to have forgotten that the BCS will celebrate its last year
this season...and that the Cotton Bowl is part of the new 4-team playoff
structure. Spoken like a true Ute?
MWC is amazingly still relevant. By giving Boise what they did they're
keeping a strong conference together. It's unfortunate that they should
have given a similar deal to BYU in order to keep the Cougars in the league...
Oh POOR little Y FANS.....LOL..... If you truly think that being INDY is better
then being in the PAC 12 you know nothing about College Sports. Yes there are
benefits to being indy for sure, if your ND. But if you are the Y! Then 2
games lost and your season is pretty much a loss....National Champ hopes I mean.
I know it's hard for everyone to admit but Utah is in a great place.
I'm not a UTE fan but I'm realistic. And I saw someone say the Pac 12
is one of the weakest? Really? Clearly you have no clue also. Ranked teams
this year just in FB-USC, Oregon, Oregon St.,UCLA, Stanford....just to name a
few!!!! Keep telling yourself the Indy is a good thing and keep hating on a Pac
12 school....LOL 2 of which got pay days for BCS games! Oh and they also WON.
Spokane Ute nailed it.
Re Chris B.Being an independant is much better than being in the pac
12 or the MWC. Here's a prediction for you Chris:Utah State will win a conference title in the MWC before the Utes win one in
The MWC is over rated and unstable. We was on ESPN 11 times last year and made
huge amounts of money every time. Independence is better than MWc
As loooong time Aggie I could not be more pleased for the way things are shaping
up in the MWC. This will be a great fit for USU for both hoops and gridiron.
Chris BSalt Lake City, UTYou'll just never know what it is like
to ... go undefeated, and be recognized as one of the big boys. And,
apparently, neither will you.(BTW--can I tell you how much I enjoy
your posts? They add a touch of humor to my day whenever I see them. I mean, you
are being funny, aren't you?)
The MWC should get a BCS bid. I would like to see that happen, and the Cotton
Bowl added to the BCS mix. BYU fans attack Chris B's comment, and I get
that. I must say that Utah has a better chance then BYU of ever playing in a BCS
bowl though. In the PAC 12 you can finish with 2 loses, or even more if you win
the conference title game, and get a BCS bid. BYU would have to go 12-0 or
possibly 11-1 to get a bid; and that's not going to happen. It's tough
to imagine either school getting a BCS bid for quite some time; based on the
last two seasons. Actually, Utah State was very, very close to a BCS bid this
year. With Anderson gone, it may be a long time before they reach that point
Chris B...One of the big boys...ha, ha, ha. It amazes me that after
the year Utah had, you still consider yourself one of the big boys. Yes, USC is
a big boy among children...but there is only one big boy in the PAC 12 and that
is Oregon. But every big boy has to have stepping (on) stones to look big...and
Utah has become a stone. With the year USC had, their recruiting
class is starting to lose commits...and after the year Utah had, you better send
each one of your commits (PAC big boys hand-me-downs) some ice cream cones and
candy as they to will look for greener pastures. The PAC 12 is the
lowest rated conference among the BCS conferences and the future looks even
dimmer for the overrated conference.Utah is a want-a-bee and is
failing more each year...sorry Chris B. it is just the wrong direction.
@ Chris BRegarding your PAC 12 Utes, "You'll just never
know what it is like to play in [future] BCS games...(or) go undefeated, and be
recognized as one of the big boys"What you will remember is two
BCS Games played as an outsider, as that is the only way Utah will ever play in
a BCS game. They didn't go to ANY bowl game this year, or did you
conveniently forget that? And one of the reasons was that Utah State beat you.
Remember that, too? But then you won't need to worry about USU or BYU much
anymore...Michigan (or Fresno State) will be beating Utah on a semi-regular
basis.Isn't it great sharing a BCS conference with Colorado and
Washington State, your buddies asnd new rivals? Did you have a "bowl
party" to watch any of the 8 teams from your conference of champions that
earned bowl invitations go 4 - 4? Or did you go "bowling" at Orchard
Lanes? Just remember that USU and BYU both won their bowl games
this year. So enjoy the money because that's all you have to show for your
conference affiliation. Now, get "frantic and emotional."
I think it would be good for the MWC to have SDSU stay. Right now the MWC looks
like it has a better future than the Big East. With BSU staying, the long
awaited demise of the MTN (worst sports TV network hardly anyone knew about!)
and the new TV contract the MWC looks better than it ever has. Certainly the MWC
is already better than the PAC-12 in basketball and with the changes coming in
football the MWC could also become a football power!
After years of the Mountain West and Big East having rough parity in football,
yet the Big East being an AQ conference and the MWC not, there is a certain
irony of the MWC striking a couple of blows against the Big East.
This means the MWC is now complete and won't be accepting any please from
WAC/indy teams in the foreseeable future.I love being in a BCS
conference!Sorry aggies, Sorry cougars. You'll just never know
what it is like to play in BCS games, get BCS money, go undefeated, and be
recognized as one of the big boys
Trust SDSU to be in the middle of any controversy. We all know what they had to
say about BYU and then they had to eat crow of sorts in the Pointsettia Bowl.
(BYU is 6 - 0 over SDSU in football during the last 6 games, by the way.) This
just shows how weird it was to have a team from San Diego in the Big East. I feel the Cougars were smart to not jump to the Big East last
