antiBCS, do you also think it's funny that BYU fans do the same thing with their football team, looking at mindless computer rankings to judge teams instead of head to head results? People are going to defend their team, that should surprise no one.

Your OOC schedule was supposed to be pathetic, but fortunately for U, you and your opponents have been better than expected.

As BYU fans, we thank U for not dragging down BYU's RPI this year.

    Current RealTime RPI

    #53 BYU - SOS #53
    #70 Utah - SOS #66

Sorry CougFan - misread your post. I take it all back.

It's funny how Utah fans point to head-to-head results in football as proof that Utah is better, despite the overall results, while completely ignoring the head-to-head in basketball.

BYU will be light years ahead of Utah by the end of the season.

Uncle Rico - if our competition is so pathetic, why is our RPI at 70 right now? Why does Sagarin have us ranked at 79 while byU is at 85? byU was SUPPOSED to have been light years ahead of Utah this year. Everybody saw that they are not as they barely eked out a win on their home court. You should be more concerned about your own team than knocking a team that is clearly ahead of where they are supposed to be.

CougFan: byU would be dancing if they were still in the MWC?? The MWC is one of the highest rated conferences this year!! Take off the blue lenses dude. byU would be in the middle of the MWC at best. But we all know they are in a conference with one good team and one decent team, and neither of them are byU. byU is third best in a two-team conference. That means no dance no matter how you spell it. Besides, do you really want byU to go to the dance just to add to their national record of incompetence? How many final fours have they been to? Zero you say? What is their tournament record? Horrible losing record you say? Do us all a favor and don't talk up what you aren't and will never be - basketball relevant.

CFIT, it is interesting to see how the criteria by which the development of the team is judged changes from week to week. From "we won't know anything until the BYU game because everyone else is garbage, and it's the weakest schedule of losers ever," to "well, they got up for the BYU game, and almost stole a win from a vastly better opponent," to now, "we can't use the win-loss records of their opponents to judge their competition, because all of them have the worst schedules." I thought Utah had the worst schedule in history, at least that's what I was told. Now, somehow, the teams that they've beat have even worse schedules, because they're winning, too. And that "one game wonder" at BYU seems to be pretty much the norm of how they've played every game. Not criticizing you, because generally I think you're a fair evaluator, but it is interesting, is it not? Meanwhile, the Sagarin ratings (which I personally don't give a lot of credence to, although many Cougar faithful seem to swear by it when it suits them), has Utah (84) rated just below BYU (83).

Can you please tell us how a team picked to finish last in the PAC-12 is overrated?

Didn't BYU, picked to finish 2nd in the WCC and favorite to win Utah by 20+ points at home, struggle to beat us?

Way to come back down 8 early and then finding a way win at the end. Unlike the BYU game, good job executing down the stretch.

Good win, great defense. Third straight game keeping a team way below their game average.

    Go UTES!!

    Uncle Rico;

I would call Utah, Cal State Northridge, Notre Dame, and Weber good competition. It's loony to deny that.

It will be nice to see the Utes play again finally. I hope they can shake the dust off and keep making strides forward. It would be nice if they can get a win tonight and put that last disappointment behind them.

I agree with the above poster about Utah's defense - they have made great strides in that area this year so far.

I have no idea of how many wins that will end up translating into by the end of the season but my hope is that coach K can keep his guys believing that they can win and that they can keep improving each week. There are no quick fixes but he has them moving forward so far.

    Go Utes!

Good start for Utah, with a fair schedule. That's just fine by me. I could see Utah going .500 in the PAC or even a little better this year. Other than Arizona and possibly Colorado, the conference is down again this year. Looking forward to watching tonights game on the PAC 12 channel.

    GO UTES!

The bottom line is Utah is on the right track. This is now a game we should win at home.

Your predictions change week to week depending on which way the wind is blowing:

I apologize for getting Ute fans excited with my post last week proclaiming the Utes would win 10 - 12 non-conference games this year (and zero conference games). An 8 win season is more llikely and would be an accomplishment over last year... It's going to be a long year on the hill." -- Nov 17 2012 (after Sacramento loss)

"I really thought Utah would only have 2 or 3 non-conference losses with this schedule, but with this loss [SMU] I'm raising it to 5 losses which could start to put some heat on Coach k2." -- Nov. 29, 2012 (after SMU loss)

Let's keep the wins coming Utes! This team plays D with heart which is the foundation for a great college basketball team. That fact along with the talent level getting better and I like where coach K has this team headed.

I wish I could make it to the HC tonight. It would be sweet to see the Utes beat a team coached by a basketball legend. I'll be watching on the PAC12 Net though.

    Go Utes!

The preseason has gone almost exactly as I predicted with the exception of losing to Sac St and beating a Boise St team that is better than I expected, but still a middle of the MWC team, at best.

StGtoSLC - U can't judge the pre-season by the records of the teams U played. No matter how you spin it, this was cupcake row. SMU and BYU are the only teams on your pre-season schedule that have a chance of dancing in March, and I think both are questionable to make it this year. If BYU was still in the MWC, they would not be dancing this year. But watch out for the Cougs in the coming years.

    Dec. 18, 2012 8:08 a.m.

Excited for the game tonight. Good luck against SMU Utes!!!

    Dec. 17, 2012 11:15 p.m.

Uncle Rico, the nonconference schedule definitely hasn't been murderer's row, but it really isn't as bad as it was made out to be in the preseason. Yes, the opening and closing nonconference teams, Willamette and College of Idaho, are bottom of the barrel, but nearly every school schedules at least one or two similar games, just not usually as bad as either of those. Aside from them, Utah's nonconference opponents have a combined record of 51-37 (59-39 if you count SMU twice), including a win over top 20 Creighton, with Idaho State being the only terrible D1 team.

Utah basketball record much like BYU's football record, is what it is because they haven't played very good competition. We'll see how they do when they play Arizona.
Very weak non-conference schedule so far.
