My family raises chickens, and after Easter, I always wind up with a few chicks that children didn't take responsibility for. They add to my flock and increase my egg production, and are well taken care of. If the people that buy these birds know where they can be 'adopted' out after Easter, it can still be a good experience.

Commercial egg or chicken production involves hundreds of thousands of birds on any given 'farm' in huge barns, totally supported by machinery. It ain't cute, but it's what we really need to do to produce a high protein diet for hundreds of millions of people...cheaply. I'm good with that.
