According to other news reports at the time, and jail records, this individual is not only in fact an illegal alien from Mexico, but his "various other misdemeanor charges" also included driving with suspended driving "privileges." In other words, he was caught before, but was not properly held accountable at the time for being in this country illegally, as he should have been.

Is it relevant that this individual was an illegal alien?

It sure is. As a society, we accept, if somewhat reluctantly, the risks associated with driving and bicycling around people who have the basic right to be in this country in the first place.

It is an altogether different matter in the case of illegal aliens, who have no right to be here.

And rightly so. Life carries with it enough risks as it is. It is one of the principal reasons illegal immigration should not be tolerated.

This is why DUI check points are needed a life was needlessly take, because of a drunkdriver who also left the scene of an accident. I hope this man gets the harshes sentence that is possiable. I have been to way too many scenes where alcohol or speed has been a factor. I am a retired State Trooper from the south. I furture believe that when tools are taken away from us in doing our job. My prayer are still with the family that has lost a Love one do to this crime of the DUI driver.
