The end of the article had the most practical application: parents should use the tooth fairy as a budget talk time. The economy is bad, and I sincerely hope we get more financially responsible leaders in office. However, at home, parents can make a huge difference by teaching children the difference between needs and frivolities. When I taught school in a city where the tap water was acceptable, I saw many children from "poverty" level homes taking bottled water with them to recess so they wouldn't have to lose recess time going inside to the fountain, a few feet from the door. Most of them brought money to school so they could buy water and snacks from the recess fairy. Often these children had dumped most of their free breakfast furnished at the school.
