There are three Utah players in the class of 2013 rated four stars by Rivals and you only mention two of them? Just curious how that's possible in an article about the top talent for 2013.

Man you guys are scary. Ute fans actually posting on an article about Utah, not BYU. That Maya calendar thing and the end of the world must be true, because this is just too weird.

"I thought the recruiting efforts were to expand not contract?"

What part of Utah's top recruiting class ever do you not understand? In the past Utah couldn't get the top in state recruits, they picked BYU or went elsewhere. Now, that game has changed. Utah took 4 of the top 5 last year and 2 this year with 2 others going to other BCS teams.

"I guess it's only natural for big balloons to contract when they lose their hot air."

    Or they transfer to Kansas.

    Go UTES!

I have been following all of the sports articles the past few weeks only to find zero comments or any of the u articles regarding bball or other sports. I think there was one u fan who made a simple minded comment on the women's gymnastics team. Now they all come out of hibernation at the sound of a football article. Wow, it must really be lonely being a one sport university. The DN puts in an article about football just to keep the u fans checking the news and trying to find anything they can crow about.

Hey u fans did you see that BYU won the Deseret Duel trophy again......what is this at least three years in a row? Poor ute's have to hang all hope of anything and everything on one sport. Good luck with that in the pac whatever and your middle to bottom finish every year. We at the Y will continue to finish in the top 25 in football, have a wonderful bball team, a top volleyball team, along with track, rugby and all the other sports that I could go on and on and on about.

What are you trying to say?

"The Utes have a small place raising middle-ground football players."
I'm serious what are you trying to say. This small place has been sending a number of players to the NFL and will keep doing so, these are your "middle-ground football players". Man if the Utes are getting "middle-ground" players what and the heck has the Y been getting. Expect the Y to be in the low 60's to low 70's as far as the ranking of future recruiting classes, the U will stay in the top 30 because of the PAC-12. I am just trying to understand why you would think that the U needs all the luck they can get. Utah just got a lot of very good players, I guess with all that luck.

If Utah can just get all those stud Lone Peak players that hunt ducks and take quarterback lessons they will be set.

This is just an indictment of the Utes' bad recruiting situation and that where before they could compete in larger market areas they no longer can. It's going to be a tough uphill climb. At least for CU they have Denver. The Utes have a small place raising middle-ground football players. Best of luck ot the Utes as they try to compete with the large market teams, they'll need all the luck they can get.

You'll notice 54-10 didn't give you actual answer to your question, because he can't as that is not what Bronco said, instead he simply tried to make it about me.

Great work as always! Who would've thought 25 years ago that I would be reading an article like this from you about my beloved Utes?

Ducky is going to have a problem with you for a comment like that. Way too reasonable and relevant to the article.

    Feb. 17, 2012 11:38 a.m.

Not trying to be contentious, just wondering where Bronco promised to win every in-state recruiting battle? I'm a Cougar fan but I just don't believe that he would make that promise knowing that BYU does not get every recruit they go after, in any year.

Qwest, you must have forgotten about the "AP Top 26 Poll" I keep hearing about.

Talon did play qb when Hansen was hurt but probably will not play there next season for a couple of reasons. The number one reason is that he doesn't want to, and has made it clear. The second is that the qb transferring in from Jordan is really good. His name is Baron Gajkowski and according to people I know at Jordan he is better than the freshman, Austin Kafentzis, that started last year, who was really good, but the freshmans dad is on Jordans staff. This other qb was a sophomore last season and he played against Lone Peak in the playoffs, when Jordan almost upset Lone Peak and probably should have, when the freshman qb got injured. He looked great in that game.

Of course that is subject to whether or not the UHSAA allows the transfer but judging by how things have gone recently you would think it will happen. Hansen was allowed to transfer to Lone Peak from American Fork on very weak grounds after his sophomore year so I doubt the UHSAA has any real bite with their rules.

Coach Whit says the talent level of Utah football recruits coninues to get better. Rivals already rating four Utah recruits as 4 star seems to support that position. So how do the local colleges respond? Utah "will continue to focus on in-state recruiting". Whereas the Y recently announced they were abandoning their long time approach and signing fewer early and going to be more competitive later in the recruiting process. Make sense to me - only IF - this year's crop 1) has fewer recruits who are related to former Y players, 2) have recruits that weigh the advantages of Independence against other options, 3) more recruits have a higher skill level and aspire to play at the next level, or 4) recruits understand 1984 is 28 years ago and ask what have you done lately?

"That was the weakest schedule byu has ever had that is why they only ended up in 1 of the polls."

Not so. Their 1984 schedule was even WEAKER. It was ranked 104th out of 108. I believe last year's was ranked somewhere around 90. Thanks to TCU, Texas, and Utah of course.

"'Duckie' just enjoys double digit win seasons and national rankings almost every year. He doesn't care what recruits are ranked or where they come from."

Ducky ALSO doesn't care that his double digit wins come agains "Bo Diddley Tech" and "Little Sisters of the Poor"....just as long as he gets a double digit win. No wonder the cougs returned back to the WAC. 7-6 [thank you Chad Bunn] vs. MWC? No thank you. 10-3 vs. the WAC? Yes please!

Too bad USC will be eligible to rank in the Coaches Poll next season. No backing ala vacated spot for YOU this year.

Utah had a great recruiting class this year. Not only was it the highest ranked class Utah has ever had but we completely won the instate recruiting battle.

As for what makes ducky happy, I have to laugh. Keep pounding your chest for that "top 25" national ranking. I guess getting ranked #25 in 1 out of the 3 national polls is as good as it gets down in Provo. I agree a 10 win season is impressive, but last years record is nothing to be proud of. That was the weakest schedule byu has ever had that is why they only ended up in 1 of the polls.

Utah will continue to focus on talent and making better players out of that talent. Utah has put more players into the NFL in recent years than the cougs and I expect that will continue as well.

Can't wait for next season - Go Utes!

    Feb. 16, 2012 6:34 p.m.

Duckie may enjoy double digit wins (fails to mention that is based on a MWC, CUSA, and/or WAC schedule) but Utah fans enjoy winning bowl games that include BCS bowls. I will agree with him that the stars on recruits are often over rated. Look at most of the players Utah has sent to the pro's recently and they are typically 3 star recruits.
PS - Enjoy your trip to Tulsa next fall.

How many frequent flyer miles do you have down in the inferno that you are so familiar with it ?
Good recruiting year as Utah again sends some of it's stellar coaching staff to big name schools.
Should be a good game at RES next year !

No he doesn't enjoy the 44 point beatdowns because he never sees them. Remember that he was in Tulsa not at the game. In fact, he doesn't even remember there being a game last year nor does he remember that in the last 10 years, Utah is 7-3 against BYU. That's a lot of travelling to Tulsa.

Talon Shumway may end up playing qb this year, he played there as a soph when Chase Hansen was injured and did a great job. Alta has two receivers who will be heavily recruited, Harrison Handley is 6'6" and Ammon Barker has started since he was a soph and is 6'3". Both have received interest from in-state schools as well as Oregon, Missouri, Nebraska, and numerous others. Handley will likely end up at BYU though, his dad played te for the Y.

Just need to make sure the Utes get Star's little brother out of Bingham. He's quite the stud. He played on my son's team two years ago and he was a man among boys. When he felt inspired, he was extremely dominant.
